Description
The story is of Kitano Seiichirou, a very kind and pure-hearted young man, with a horrifying, monstrous face. People being what they are, they think he's a terrifying delinquent, and there are plenty of chance misunderstandings (coupled with Kitano's convenient inability to understand what's happening around him) that propel him into the position of "school guardian", a.k.a. head thug on campus.

Totally worth reading. Don't let the art stop you its gets better or I should say you get used to it?
find it weird that its not licensed in english...

This is the funniest manga i've ever read and it takes a lot to make me laugh. Its probably the only manga i've read that made me laugh out loud so much.
Great!

I rarely comment on series or will plug a series. But this one is great! The characters are very well defined, and the art is simple, but just detailed enough to tell a good story. The plot of how people change through time is very heartwarming and the ending, albeit slightly cheesy, is very appropriate.
great manga

at first i was put off by the art, and i thought the story was unoriginal, however somehow the mangaka made it work, the art got progressively better as i read it and the characters came alive i really found this manga funny and was sad to see it end and although they are some parts in the manga that was unreasonable it was still good and i was sad to see it end
Close to perfection. Or at least, would have been...

I read through the first chapter of this manga about a year ago then stopped. I thought it was hilarious but then you guessed it, the art along with how bad I felt for Kitano diverted my attention to other manga, mostly ecchi and mainstream stuff. Having read reviews, I finally convinced myself that this manga might be worth reading so I finally gave it a shot.
First let's talk about art. The art in the first two volumes were honestly mediocre but it gets a lot better. In the 3rd - 9th volumes it looks a bit like Slam Dunk or any other 90's manga. Then finally in the 10th to 15th volumes the author finally had his distinct style. The backgrounds were very detailed and awesome.
Now to talk about the plot. I would easily classify this manga to be more of comedy and romance before fighting mainly because it tells the story of Kitano and the town rather than the typical "protagonist-wants-to-be-the-strongest-bastard-in-the-whole-neighborhood/world" plot.
I don't know if it's the author's style or something but the author doesn't really use the common chibi or SD to emphasive funny scenes; you can't really know what to make out of a scene until you read the dialog.
As for the romance and slice of life part, I'm speechless. It's just pure brilliant. Excellent character development. Great scenarios. Chapters 76-78 are worth reading the whole manga for.
For it's plot though, it would have been great for a weekly digest, shame, it only ran in monthly. What I like about most in this manga is the concept of "the guardian of the school" which in the first half of the manga is defined to be simply the strongest bastard in the school. By the next half Kitano had redefined the term. Although not in physical appearance and strength; by heart, you could say that he really deserved the title more than anyone. Cheesy as it may sound, you can also learn a lot about this manga. I'm sure I did.
Although the ending was good, it's a shame though that this manga had to end so soon. But I'm also glad that the story didn't decline like most mainstream manga these days. This manga without a doubt deserves a 10.

At first, the art wasn't very attractive and the topic of trying to be the strongest fighter didn't appeal to me, but I stuck with it. And I'm glad I did. Despite my constant frustration of all the misunderstandings that Kitano suffered from, I accepted it. It was how his life was and I admire him for continuing to be such an optimistic and peaceful guy. The other characters were likable too (though Kuroda's stubbornness really annoyed me sometimes). I liked how Kitano made such a big difference in their lives just by being with him. But my favorite part would have to be:
Although most of the students realized that Kitano was actually a nice, normal guy, I would have liked it if the head of the school realized it too.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
When Takehisa said that whether Kitano was normal or a thug, it didn't matter to him because Kitano was his "best friend in the whole world." That comment made the whole series just worth it. I was incredibly touched that he would openly admit/realize it.

the first few volumes and the last few were, in my opinion, the funniest and had the most character development. the chapters that were in between were hit-and-misses. some were hilarious, but others dragged.
i really liked the main character and the rest of his gang and i think in the end i got really attached to the people and the town that they live in. definitely recommend this series!!

This manga is really good, though at the first sight the art may be repellent. When you get used to the art, you will be delighted with the plot. Later it will get better (near the level in Claymore), but by that time it won't matter anymore.
However the plot isn't flawless. Some explanations are contrived and not very believable, but they don't ruin the whole picture.
Plot: 9,5/10
Art: 6/10 (later 8/10)
Overall: 9/10

One of the funniest manga. Ever. Priceless. Fighting and relationships; this is everything that's actually good in a shounen manga... I did feel sorry for poor Kitano for most of the series, though.

Okay. First, and the most important thing - this manga is awesome and YOU MUST READ IT. But it doesn't mean that it doesn't have any disadvantages. It does.
Many people say that drawings are awful - well, first volumes aren't really good when it comes to art, but artist improves with each volume and it becames really good later.
But what i want to complain about is... Here's the thing:
There is Kitano. He is a really good boy, almost an angel, but his face is horrible and people hate him the first moment they see him. And, okay, it was funny first 5-6 times, when there was this misunderstanding, and when new characters appeared, but it's really getting tiresome. I mean, how many times can you read the same thing? New character appears, see Kitano, fights him and of course thinks of him as a Devil. And while they are beating him or saying bad things about him, all he can say is "huh?", "no...", "um..." and he can't even explain anything. I mean, wth?
I'm after 9 volumes and I really hope that there wouldn't be any more new characters, because I'm tired of this.
But still! This manga is really awesome, I lmao'ed a lot of times and, well, even felt sorry for poor Kitano ; _ ;
