If you haven't heard of this manga you've been living under a rock. If you don't like this manga, I'm sorry, but you have awful taste. One of the most popular psychological mangas that I second only to Liar Game, it's brilliant.
All characters whether you are on L's side, Light's side, or prefer to be like Ryuk and just watch things unfold, are likable (yes, even Misa). It was unpredictable, it was suspenseful, it was comical, it was all-around great. Haven't read it? Read it. Don't like it? The bloody hell is wrong with you!
Read it and appreciate it for the amazing piece of work it is.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
As everyone previousley said that you would love the plot. It shows the true nature of human.
Though author have done unjustice to the character of Light. He was a good character who used it to make a world better to live. His purpose have been forgottened in the series. It looks like that author wanted to make him as a villain. He was originally good, but just author wanted to make him dull or wrong person,he made him look like a murderer.
Dont forgot that it was L and police which forced him to kill innocent people. Who would allow himself to be executed. The manga lost its main theme.
Also after L's death all tricks were used again. Same plot again and again. Manga's original length was about 50-60 chapters but to earn money they destroyed and stretched the stroy to a large extent.
I guess Light should have been given a justible role.

Anyone who thinks that you can change the world without sacrifice is an idiot. I keep hearing things like L was awesome and Light was evil and yet as we speak there are illicit dealings going on such as a secret weapons program in the fukushima reactor which prevented a timely response and worsened the disaster as well as a coverup of the corrupt nature of the industry in general.
Right now one of the two major parties in the United States is advocating cutting 4 trillion dollars from medicare and medicaid to pay for yet more tax cuts for the rich and the ignorant plebians who support them are gobbling up their oversimplified reasoning. In general corporate america is sucking the nation dry and warmongering abroad and yet we have a justice system that not only allows them to get away with unforgivable atrocities but actually rewards them for it.
Looking at a justice system like this do you think that it is possible to judge the moral righteousness of a person using this system as a standard? I don't and yet that is exactly what L does. He pursues the case because of misguided idealism and self interest (he took on the case because he was interested in the case). The police and L make me sick. They just did what was best for themselves all along.
Other than that it was good. The ending was so horrible that im lowering it from a 9 to a 7. It was seriously that bad.

Simple really.
1. People adore L.
I understand that, as he is really cool and refreshing. Sadly, he gradually attracted to Light Yagami and lost his brilliant reasoning. And the kicker, of course, when the mangaka decided to stop L-saga and start a new Mello/Near-saga. Thus L fanboy got pissed, stopped reading, and started to rant and rant and rant and rant and rant again. If you doubt me, try to imagine what would happened if suddenly, without warning, Sasuke died, and Naruto chases a new character Ekusas, Sasuke's long lost twin. Get my point? Things would go ugly, and in this case, it exactly what happened in Death Note.
2. This manga has too many words.
There are even certain page which contains more than a hundred word. This also made people became impatient and stop reading. To fully enjoy Death Note, you have to read the manga down to every word. Sounds like pain I know, but once you decide to not to do this, I assure that you will get confused and ultimately loose interest in Death Note.
Don't be like them, they don't know what they missed. Read only if you like psychological manga. Death Note is like mint candy with liquid chocolate inside. Don't suddenly bite it just to taste the core, but let it flow and melt naturally until you get to the core. In other word, this manga is not for everyone for sure, but definitely still one of the best among its kind.

This is an epic story with some of the best mind games ever seen manga and told form the rare but interesting anti-hero side. As long as you over look a few out of character and stupid actions taken near the start of the story and a few of the events right at the end, this manga is pure gold volume cover to volume back.

what a nice little series. Yagami Light truly is a sadistic child, isn't he? I couldn't really find myself to like many of the characters... I found that I only really liked L... Light and Mello were just really creepy, Misa was annoying and Near was just a copy of L, and not as cool...
Death Note started to terrify me because I found it kinda scary
Concept of plot and art were very nice though
Not sure if I would judge it against Fruits basket though... because Fruits basket is shoujo

Okay, this is starting to agrivate me. This is probably one of THE BEST manga series I have ever read. A+++ art, characters, story, etc. Now, some people have said it gets boring during the second arc. I completely disagree. I think the second arc definately is very interesting. Near is kind of a bland character, but Mello keeps things very interesting. I cannot speak for volumes 10-12, because I have only read up to 9, but I definately think what I have read of the Near/mello arc is more interesting than the Yotsuba Arc in volumes 5-6.
Amazing manga. Read it now. Stop complaining, people. The second half is GOOD. It's just not AS good as the first. It's up there though.
