The art is cool, the concept is original and the story on a whole was great.. really great
some parts were dragged on a bit so if you're reading in a rush it'll seem slow but its really very interesting
ending is abrupt, but in a way thats the beauty of it... though i wish there was an epilogue

This is the best. I've never read a manga with such an original and interesting story combined with a very great style of drawing. It's one of the most demanding manga series I've read and it proves that there is more than just poor shoujo stuff.
It's amazing.

Well, I'm going to ignore some of the comments here that say DN is unnecessarily complex or emo or whatever. Death Note is one of the best shounen manga I've ever read. I even bought the box set for it (truth be told, I only buy manga that I really, REALLY like).
Why is it so good, then? (If you don't agree, fair enough. These are my opinion.)
1) The main characters are very intelligent and their ways of executing their plans are amazingly neat.
2) Storyline is consistent.
3) Supernatural plays a big role in this, yet it doesn't completely take over and makes everything magical. (Does that even make sense? o.O)
4) The ending is perfect (I'm talking about the manga, not the anime). Enough said.
Cons:
1) Minor characters are too stupid and one dimensional.
2) Intelligent characters are killed too easily by Light (SPOILER example: Naomi).
3) The story drags on for a little bit after a certain character's death, but it picks up the pace quickly enough that I didn't lose interest.
Art style: I love the art. The characters body and facial features are very proportional. You can easily tell the character's age by looking at them (in some manga, especially shoujo, everyone looks the same, even if they're supposed to be mature/old). You can even tell their race by their facial features, which I think is remarkable. Also, as far as I noticed, there are no two characters that share the same style of eyes (besides Mello and Near, I think).
Anyway, enough of me rambling.
If anyone is looking for a good manga with a dark, intriguing story with awesome (for the lack of a better word ) main characters, Death Note is the way to go.

Well, what would you do if you did really go to HELL and be tormented forever and ever in the real life?
Can you be perfectly composed and then go there with cocky confidence?
Therefore, it's perfectly understandable to see Yagami suddenly changing into another person, so abruptly uncharacteristic.
No matter how awesomely powerful or strong one is, he'd be finally faced with such a frightening scenario and suddenly paled, knowing clearly that there is NO MORE HOPE for him. It is same for everyone of us, human beings of all races.
Though the fitting place for the most ruthless mastermind, Yagami is only Nothingness, nevertheless it's utterly terrifying beyond human imagination.
Overall, I highly rated it 10 stars.

Unlike some people, I think the ending of this series is okay. The series started out as one of the best things I had read in a long, long time, but faltered in the middle for a while; I blame it on being an Shounen Jump title, which notoriously makes storylines that could easily go for about 5 volumes expand into 10+ long repetitive messes.
Luckily, this doesn't really happen with Death Note. The middle storyline seems a bit weak compared to the tightly-wound first part, but it picks up towards the end, which is a conclusion that really seemed inevitable from the get-go. Maybe the means to the end weren't the best that could have been conceived, but I found it a fitting ending.

I seem to agree that this manga was good until it hit a certain point and then my will to read it just dropped off. I plan to finish it one day but I just cannot say when that will be.
This is a greaat series.
The plot intriguing is not as it seem....we can read this manga ad might drawn into endless possibilities of conclusions..yet sometime it is waaaay more unexplained than the X-Files series..the author really make his touch unique with this Death Note..i am a fan of this series and many from my country start to read & liking it..
One of my favourite manga!

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Hate the ending though. I feel like they dumb down Light character just to have the "Good triumph over evil" ending. I mean come ON! This manga does not deserve that ending.
Still, it was a great read and I recommend anyone who's interested to give it a try.
