Reading this just made me crave a cigarette. It was like there was all this build up, but it kinda felt like it lead to no where. And with all of the backround details of things being blurred it made things a little in the confusing side. I feel the lack of information kind of killed the story a bit. It was an interesting read, but I just wish it would have been more fleshed out.

The art's the best thing about it. Gorgeous, although proportions are slightly wonky.
Story's decent, nice enough idea that wasn't delivered well enough. Absolutely nothing was concluded and no explanations were given.

It was starting to become pretty good, but then it just stopped. It felt like the mangaka kind of just dropped it. There was a lot left hanging. Also, their relationship hadn't fully developed. It was lacking. Pity as it has so much potential.

Lots of Potential

There is a lot of stuff that's left unexplained, but hinted at. Fumichi's past regarding his childhood and how he managed to end up at the bar are hinted as being significant, but they were never really touched on? Like when Sazawa and Fumichi were talking about Fumichi's pay at the bar, Sazawa says that Fumichi is still defending him though he doesn't specify who this "him" is. Beautiful Life has a lot of potential, but I think the length that it is now doesn't fully tap into that potential. I think it would have worked better as a longer work.

tw warning: rape; About Fumichi's rape, I don't think he remembers it or at the very least his memory is lacking about the attack. Like after he was raped, he fell asleep and when he woke up he was confused about why his back was sore. He was administered a drug, but we don't know what the drug does, but I think it probably messed with his memory.

Nice to look at, but superficial.

First - I like the artists style, especially when it comes to the characters design. Of course the male characters are handsome and the same goes even for the woman showing up, while the kid lets the cuteness factor rise. But -

The created atmosphere, that was in fact somewhat matching the storyline, couldn't compensate the matters happening. It just doesn't felt right, how the various issues of the main character have been handeled and the topic of abuse was taken on. The way it was dealed with was superficial - and that's a matter, that lefts a bitter taste at the end.

To sum it up - My rating is an 8 and the reason is the characters design. Unfortunately the storyline wouldn't have been able to reach a 6, because so many issues are unsettled.

Cute with undercurrent of angst.

I wanted to read this because I'm a huge sucker for guys with kids. On that front I wasn't really disappointed; the family dynamic gives you this warm, fluffy feeling.
This manga is a cute story on the surface with an undercurrent of darkness and angst. What I found most disappointing is that the characters' motives are never explained, resulting in actions and events that don't make sense to the reader. I agree that there was so, so much more potential here.

But I was never bored and I don't regret reading Beautiful Life all the way through. The relationship dynamic and overall atmosphere are unique enough that I think it's a worthy read for a BL fan.

It seems like some parts were elaborated well in the series. But you'll get the overall view of what the author is trying to convey in the story. Regarding the rape scene, I can only say that the bar that he used to work at was full of horny jerks and drug addicts?! It's a little random for me to say. The guy just went on saying, "I want special service," got rejected, beat up the main character and raped in some other day after drugging him. -.-

But overall, the family scenes warm my heart. Not a bad story.

If only the author had filled out the background

I liked the idea, and the overall atmosphere and art were great, but the plot wasn't executed well. There was waaay too much left unexplained that it left the entire story feeling incomplete. About the only thing that was given by the end was that the two main characters had fallen for each other. But Fumichi's violent interactions with his customers, his past which was introduced and never revisited, how on earth he was even able to live without earning any money, having no concept of money management, and how he came to be in his very strange situation are completely ignored by the end. All in all, without having any explanations to any of this, the author brought too much attention to what the story lacked rather than what it offered.
