One of the most down to earth type of light novel you will read.
by gensou

Rating: 8.5  / 10.0
Like the former review said, the main character is what you consider a simple person that just want to do his own thing. He will lie, cheat, steal, and do whatever he want to get what he want. In some sense he is similar to a villain. Now as weird as it might sound, this is actually what most people in his shoe would do, even if they don't admit it.

Put it in another perspective, imagine you're suddenly kidnap and put in a land where you have no knowledge of and was giving something on the line of "you're a hero, I want you to save us and risk your life to fight this demon" by your kidnapper, a demon that you yourself never interact with and have no knowledge of.

You choose to not follow your kidnapper plan and run away and found out you have unique power. Along the way you meet people that are quite different from you, imagine it is like your first time seeing a dolphin. If you don't get the reference, read up on dolphin. Anyway, you have two option when meeting these new people that live in a culture you never heard of, you either assume they won't do anything to you and act like they're civilize people or you can use your new found power that you can use to protect yourself by acting high and mighty.

But this is just my perspective on how you should read this manga. Don't read it asssuming everything will turn out the way it should be, read it from a perspective of a teenager getting kidnap and put in a strange land.

It is one of the best light novel you've ever read? probably not. It is a slow light novel that slowly tell his travel. The story line so far is quite slow and is similar to most "travel to a different world rpg" novel. So far there are no "holy fuck I didn't expect this to happen" moment but it have a lot of potential that the author could explore to help increase drama of the story. So far those potential are somewhat showing on chapter 18-19 but how it start/end no one know.

Konjiki no Word Master? the main Hero is.. really kinda of an @55.. I got really disillusioned by him, LOVE the first 7 chapters.. but the moment he start interacting with other people.. I believe it's a cultural thing I was educated to help others when they need help, so reading about someone how will not move when he can make a difference, well that just piss me off. Hey! this is my point of view make your own, just be ready for the Mc to turn in to an @55 & food whore, yeap you can make him do anything! in exchange of tasty food.. (face palm) Good luck founding out how you feel about it XD

an MC with OP ability.............with limitations
1. Mana - he cant spam it. he cant use his ability to regen it.. as for wh, read ahead and lose some SAN points with GT
2. Backlash - he dont know the real limits of his ability
(some people sayin why dont he just become a god? he'll proly die from backlash before he ascends)
3. Time limit on other effects (fly, fire, etc.)

the MC is a real jerk that wont work for free...... but will do almost anything for delicious food (like goin to war) that's why people are charmed by him.
HAREM FULL OF LOLIS with some/one normal.

more of MC's magic
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
WORD MAGIC
makes the word he writes a reality
he is afraid to venture/experiment more on his magic because of the backlash making it a all-around magic with limitations (but he's willing to take a risk for food)

it seems that the author likes an ability with various effect (the butler has flame magic with various effects)

Typical nerdy Japanese wish fufillment

The MC is your perfect scoring, introverted Japanese highschool student. Gets thrown into an unbelievable situation, but remains calm because he is one of those ~cool~ Japanese males. He'll never help anyone for free because it's too "troublesome" and he only needs to look out for number one.

Despite being a complete jerk, he'll probably come in contact with some beautiful ladies that are in trouble but he'll refuse to help until the last minute. Winning their hearts forever, despite showing zero affection. Most likely he might even fight the four other heroes and he'll win, because he's that cool.

Let's not forget, his powerful weapon is a Katana, despite being a fantasy setting.

Because ~~NIPPON BONZAI~~

the usual

It's the usual LN. Author write something, telling the readers what to think, but never really show anything.

The MC suppose to be really smart. With perfect scores in school without even attending a class. Well that's what the author told us. But in reality, this a character who's not smart enough to figure out there's tons of exploit to use on his OP character.

I'm guessing that this would be another Weed adventure. A psudo-story where the world revolve around the hero. with imbalance world. With convenient deus ex machina, kick off everytime the author can't figure out how to resolve a plot, an arc or even a simple scene.

Maybe he'll find a legendary weapon, hidden quest, maybe a hidden legendary skills, etc etc per volume, just by walking around, and getting lucky, because well... "plot".

And what's up with the opening scene? I read the same scene in probably 6 different LN. Is there a site somewhere on the internet, where this LN "writer" could just download the templates?

But to be fair, the MC could be an interesting MC, using a Strong Lead trope. Too bad the author did not realize that, for Strong Male Lead trope to be good, it need the counterpart Strong Villain trope. And definitely not as simple as making all your opponent stupid and weak.

--Update- chapter 16
The writer already ran out of gas at chapter 16. More and more of slow moving filler chapter showing up, that made me think that the author doesn't really have a story. He probably just making it up as he types. Which is not a really good idea most of the times. And one thing for sure, this series is not an outlier.

And yeah, I seconded what @CrazyPanda said. I think the author's average IQ limit the IQ of the MC. Hence why we got an average intellect, that is also selfish and boring... douche for an MC.

Dropped my rating to a 6.

A Sad Panda

*sigh*

I'm sad.

It's not because the series is bad by all means but it seems so uninspired, this is a genre that doesn't seem fresh in ideas. The main character, although suppose to be smart and pragmatic does not realize how OP his ability is even though he commented on it.

Of course its a skill limited to his imagination but I feel like we would likely not even see words used such as: omnipotence, immortality, death, revive, indestructibility, level-up/powerup, and etc used on himself or other objects.

The main character already has enough to be a god from the start and the fact that he does not even realize he had the power to simply wait and enchant his first weapon with a good few abilities while waiting for his mana to regen was a put-off. Doesn't he read any fantasy books or play RPGs? His ability just cost a flat 30 mana no matter what he uses as a word, that should be a huge flag to him. Why not permanently buff himself up and the items in his possession?

I feel like it'll end up similar to Superman in the comics. He has the power to move faster than the speed of light but throws his fist slow as molasses. Has genius level intellect but rarely uses it in a fight. In other words, the author will always limit his power level to make for a more even fight with the villain, and while this builds up tension it leaves huge plot holes and /face palm moments when you ask yourself: "Could he just do x instead? He has the ability to easily accomplish it, why isn't he doing it?"

I hope it won't end up in that route but I already have to the feeling it will. The character already has the ultimate cheat ability in terms of variability and adaptability, if he isn't considered a god by the end of the volume I would feel somewhat betrayed.

#voteMCforGOD

EDIT: Why is this protagonist so slow... I'm starting to cringe at how near-sighted the protagonist is.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It took 16 chapters before he "buffed" himself with a "good luck" buff but he stopped at that? Disappointing. The protagonist lacks any real sort of goal, if he wanted to he could probably return everyone to their original world but of course where would we get a story out of it? I want to beg the author that if he really wants to use the "unmotivated OP smart and pragmatic protagonist" please make him actually SMART and at least bring up SMART things he could do but doesn't feel like doing for some random "blah blah blah" reason. It is no good to say he is smart but not show that his is smart.

At least with the manga Gamer, the protagonist ascertains his ability's capabilities in application and test different ways to develop and use his unique power granted to him. This is how a real intelligence character would act, nothing like the protagonist in this story (it also helps that this protagonist realizes the importance of the intelligence stat by focusing a majority of his points into it and receive a noticeable boost in his problem solving abilities in the real world as a result).

This main character has the following qualities:
1. arrogant
2. boring
3. average intelligence
4. rude
5. emotionally detached from the physical world
6. selfish and self-interested

All of these can be bearable and entertaining qualities if the character was a little bit brighter.

I get that the author is trying to promote the protagonist as a "neutral" and "unifying" force in the story but also shows him to be emotionally detached from others. He is neutral through his indifference rather than through some great sense of understanding and compassion which makes him look like more of an uncaring asshole rather than a human being (though I guess a lot of people do happen to be assholes?). Of course this would probably be later be rectified by some past explanations about some random trauma that happened to him so we the readers can relate.

Cliches are fine but lacking anything to distinguish itself from other works would lead to mediocrity, I'm not asking for a masterpiece but so far every character in the novel seems incredibly 1-dimensional as if they're cardboard cutouts.

But hey, what kind of a story would it be if the main character was literally GOD? It is the epitome of "I will always win and you will always lose unless I feel like losing." Oddly enough having a main character that can literally do everything is fine with me if done properly in executing an engaging narrative. Maybe it is due to the fact that this is a translation but the plot and story telling of the novel is bland.

Now I just want the main character's ass to get kicked and for someone to put him in his place. At least to make him realize how stupid he is and make himself infinitely buff his own "intelligence" instead of luck so he can understand what he really is capable of.

What the main character needs to taste is failure and have it shoved down his throat so hard he'll come back with some real conviction and goals. He needs to be stepped on and humiliated to a point he would be left emotionally scarred and crying out in a fit and laugh his own inability and stupidity.

Typical world tarvel

So far (about er 7 chapters in) the series is your typically series of a loner who gets transported to another world with people who are the heros. Typical because... I'm looking at you 'Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou' and 'Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari'. The world setting is similar too, with the level ups and the gamer info and 'save our world' and special one who doesn't seem special....
But I'm giving it a 6.... and not dropping it because the MC is not a pushover. Right from the get-go he's all "The mages made a mistake in summoning me, and I can't go back home, but who cares. Taking care of myself is my first priority. Since you obviously made a mistake in summoning me, I'll just leave. I don't need any support, just let me have the freedom to roam as I want." Okay, he was more.... er... let's say rude... no that's no the right word to describe the MC.... Well, he knew that he was no part of a group from the beginning so there's none of the 'trying to fit in' stuff and the 'why does no one like me'. Yeah...
Reason 2, as to why I'm not dropping the novel even with all the cliches... I like the MC's 'special' power. The power of words (WORD MASTER). As a fan of reading, I've gotta say that is appealing.
