Nodame Cantabile- Gyabo!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Ok, first of all I have to come clean...
I've postponed reading this manga for over two years because I thought the art was ugly when I first tried it...
It's not ugly. It's actually quite good.
-_-;; *ashamed*

I will start by saying I really love this manga.
One of the reasons is that it doesn't go with any cliche. (well, almost. But what romance manga doesn't have some?).
Another reason is just how wonderfully well the characters are.
They're all so funny and touching. Everyone has his/hers own quirk.
In the end, you can't hate anyone. (Chiaki-oto is an ass, but well...)

It does a really good job with slice of life themes, as in letting us taste (the not so normal) everyday life experiences of Nodame, Chiaki and the others.
It's a page turner. It's full of crack. Really great gems of silly comedy.

Characters:
Nodame is mostly a silly idiot.
Shinichi is mostly a music obsessed idiot.
Both of them are good people, and their relationship is heaps of fun, laughter and face palms. ^^
They make a really sweet and funny couple.
There are flaws, and Shinichi being the ass he is sometimes, just can't (most of the time) admit his affection for Nodame.
They make each other better. Striving for music and love.
So nice... hyahyan.
As I've said, they do have flaws, and their relationship is a big dope of sugary silliness.
It's frustrating sometimes. Shinichi's decisions and prioritizing.
But it's amazing to me how Nodame reacts.
There are few manga that have such characters, if at all.

I can blab on and on about this manga, and how funny it gets.
But it would only spoil.
So, if you have any doubts about reading this manga, don't waver. It's good.

It doesn't have much drama, but it does have lots of comedy and fun.
Do not be mistaken though, it's not what you would call a "light" read. It does get lighthearted, but sucks you in with deeper things as well.
Like relationships between other characters.

Well,~
I like to type. lol
hahah>_<;;;

A small edit: I've been watching the anime, and one of its great points is that you can hear the music, but it also keeps the great funny atmosphere the manga has, and sticks closely to the plotline of the manga.

As odd as this may sound being as it is that I'm on a site dedicated to manga, I'm not a huge fan of the medium. I'm a book reader, so pictures actually annoy me when I'm trying to read something. I've tried a few times to get into comics and manga but always ended up picking up something with over 600 pages and no pictures and found more satisfaction.

That being said, I love this manga. I was originally pointed in the direction of the live action show and was a bit cautious when I approached it. I couldn't figure out how classical music could be fun. I'm very glad I took the leap. The show is one of my favorite ever (not just within Jdramas). Since I liked that so much I thought I'd give the manga a try.

It's fantastic. I spent the better part of one day just reading through NC (with breaks; the pictures were too much for my eyes). Is they anybody that doesn't love Nodame as a character? She's funny, sweet, and over-the-top in a way that actually endeared her to me. Chiaki, as stuck up as he is, has enough moments where his inner self shines through that I don't want to beat him over the head with a baseball bat. Then of course there's Mine and Masumi. If you want to know about them, you'll just have to read the manga or watch the live action (which is one of the closest adaptations of anything written I've ever seen).

I guess because I could never get into manga before and I don't really know what typical manga artwork is, the drawing style of NC seems just fine to me. Like I said, the pictures hurt my eyes after a while, but that's normal for me with any comic/manga. While it is simple overall, the orchestra scenes are enough to make up for that in spades.

I'll be sad to see this series end, but I'm also looking forward to seeing where everybody ends up. And I'm not going to lie, I want to see the entire manga series made into a live action series with Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi. They have fantastic chemistry and Ueno Juri just plain rocks as Nodame.

My first review on this website. I absolutely adored this series. I relate to the entire atmosphere and content of the story. Growing up, I've always been immersed in the classical music scene with 13 years of piano, and competitions. I'm always enthralled by the author's interpretations of pieces that I've listened to growing up. The gags and jokes that clearly shows the author's sense of humour is RIGHT up my alley -- I'm always laughing while reading each chapter. The art style seems to be so-so to most people, but I'm actually a huge fan. Perfect proportions, clean lines that are never placed wrong. Chiaki is so good-looking to me.
I was so sad that this series ended at 133 chapters....
The ending received some negative feedback, but I enjoyed it. It remained true to the series' josei nature, and was open-ended (which I appreciate). Soft, light, enjoyable... this is Nodame Cantabile.

I was going to give it a 10, but ending's are very important and this one was a let down. Other than that, the plot was great, just a little draggy for more impatient readers, but it's really one of it's kind.

I'm just gonna say, if there is 100 volume of this, I'll buy and read them all, and never get tired. Yeah....its pretty damn good.
Very original (art, characters, plot, all of it)... so it's refreshing to read...

I love how the author truly makes you feel the power of the music without you hearing a single sound. I'm not a classical music fan, not all all, but even I felt impressed with the concerts and musical performance.
The way the art is drawn and how the story is told, truly conveys the feeling well.

Funny, unique characters that just grow on you more and more. The characters are really unique. Nodame is such a shameless odd-ball that you can't help but fall in love with her. Really, she had me laughing out loud so many times, I've lost count. The way she and Chiaki became is a couple is also hilarious; an all-out brawl in the middle of the night in Paris... hahaha, a classic. Love how they interact! Chiaki maybe a grumbly straight-lacer but when he's with Nodame, it's like she knocks the air of dignity out of him, and what is left is an exasperated, baffle-minded prince who can't understanding why he's so in love with such a weird, odd-ball of a woman. Remembering it now makes me smile.

The story plot is exciting, hilarious and addicting; I read 14 volumes in 2 days... and now I'm trying to be patience while more comes out. lol
Kudos to Ninomiya Tomoko for character creation and plot development.

Hope, more people'll give this a try and see just what a great story this is.
Oh yeah... and the art is really pretty. (Might not seem so eye-catching at first, but many pages left me in awe because of the attention to detail and simple beauty of it).

Try it out... I think you'll like it.

I read all the volumes I had over and over just to laugh again. The fun never die, really. Ninomiya puts a lot of background character activity in the manga, thus makes us want to look at every detail in every frame she draws... and satisfied with it. The characters' expressions are also funny. Those crazy acts too. Yet sometimes we can't resist to awe at them. Simply genius.

It's not a deep manga, but rather a really simple and light-hearted one which shows a glimpse of a musician's life, at surface level pretty much. Add in repetitve storylines and you've got Nodame Cantabile! I'm way too biased towards this manga to rate it fairly. I was charmed by its musical aspect, as a band geek. If you love music, the classical type that is, or have been in a instrumental band of some sort; please do yourself a favour and check this manga out.
