slow but reasonable

i know that this manga seems to slow that it already reaches more than 200 chapters, saying that its kyoko is at fault.. bear in mind that kyouko is inexperience in love and unassuming that it wouldn't cross her mind that ren has feelngs for her just because he's nice, and also ren is known for being a kind gentleman in that industry..
as of the others saying that why wont she just tell him that she loves him then let me ask you, would you be able to tell the one you love that you love him when you heard coming from his mouth that he cant fall inlove with someone now.. even i wouldn't be able to coz i know wat awaits me if i tell him..

and love isnt all there is, realizing her dream and working her way up is a good thing...

this i 1 of the best manga i've ever read, i dont care bout the opinion of others... smile

I agree with flowinmyboat completely. This manga was brilliant when it first started and while it's not terrible yet, it really lacks to engage me like it once did. When you follow a manga for this long, it's going to lose some of its charm, especially when you start to get into other mangas while you wait for the scanlators to put out new chapter.

There's a reason this manga is so popular, it's an ace read and if you're just starting out you'll probably still be in love even after 200 chapters. But if you're like the group of people that have been following this since it's first release in 2003, then the hype has worn off and you're wondering why the bloody deuce you're still reading this.

This manga has entered the world of unnecessary continuity. It's a good read, but not good enough to still be trying to introduce new plots and characters. It's time for it to wrap up while it's still liked before it turns into a mess like other never-ending mangas that lose their fanbase.

Thoughts so far

I put this off for awhile because the updates were pretty slow and I was also starting to lose a bit of interest in it, but just a moment ago, I decided to pick it up again.. I REGRET NOT FOLLOWING IT SO MUCH. After many, many, many chapters, there is finally some more drastic developments between Kyoko and Ren and it had me squirming around like a fish out of water. I seriously had to gasp for air. I'm dying to know what happens after!

I've been in love with this manga since the first chapter and I really do love how the characters relationships between one another grew, but like one of the comments previously stated, it was becoming repetitive. I'm glad that it became more meaningful this time in Cain siblings arc. Before, it felt like Nakamura was just trolling us all by pulling Kyoko back to her original mindset instead of her finally realizing her love for Ren. But then again, I guess it just shows how hurt and unwilling Kyoko is towards love. Otherwise she wouldn't be Love Me's #1 member lol.

Yes, the infrequent releases and the short chapters are frustrating - but otherwise, this manga is just about perfect.

I see a lot of complaints about the most recent arc dragging on, being repetitive, and so on. I can understand that viewpoint, but I really don't agree. Ren has such a traumatic past that he has lived in a false persona for years, refusing to allow his true self any say. Even before taking on the character of 'Ren Tsuruga' he was unhappy and troubled. If the mangaka had been the type that would have resolved all that easily, she would not be anywhere near as good as she is.

The characters are real, and funny, quirky, likable.

The story and plot may seem slow, but I personally think that is partly because the manga is so addictive - when you go back and read the volumes again, what took so long when reading each chapter as it came out (think the dark moon arc) actually doesn't take that long to get through.

The art is fine to me - it improves drastically as the years pass. What the the manga lacks in beautiful art, it gains in characterization.

If you are wondering whether or not to read this amazing series, do yourself a favor and read until chap 10, if you are not hocked by then, well, you are an exception. And if you ask me why, that's what I'll tell you:

Well, I think the first thing that caught my attention was the art. It is very unusual, Nakamura-sensei has a very unique style, which she has been constantly developing. If you compare Skip Beat to Tokyo Crazy Paradise, a previous work of hers, you will immediately understand what I'm talking about. If her necks were VERY strange at first, well, they got MUCH better. And even during Tokyo Crazy Paradise or even Skip Beat, you can notice the differences, if you compare the earliest and latest chapters. Even to a noobie at art such as me, it is very pronounced.

But even if you disconsider the art, which you might forget about, once you get really into it, the plot is what gives it all the praise. It is very far from being a typical shoujo by not focusing on the romance but rather on the own characters and their development as individuals. It starts out as a road to revenge but ends up being much more than that. Each character has its own story and development. Not only are they well explored (even if not everything has been revealed yet) but they are also growing as we read. Some might say that the romance is too slow and that the story strays too often from the main romance, yet I think that it is exactly this trait that makes the manga so good.

Another aspect of the manga which surprised me greatly was the comedy. I hardly ever find anything which makes me laugh much, and whenever the comedy gets overboard I simply lose interest. Still Nakamura-sensei simply has the knack at making hilarious scenes.

I was really laughing my ass out when she chased the taxi in a bike XDDDD, or when she chanted for days until the whole family of the agent guy was in pure suffering, and I love the way she uses the grudges, it is plain hilarious

I must say this is the fist series that ever got me to read chapters as they are released. Usually I'll just wait until there is a bunch of chapters and read it all at once. However, my lust for new chapters keeps me checking for updates regularly.

In a word, read it.

After reading the latest chapter 176, sparks are flying and it's inpsired me to write a review for this amazing series which I should have done a long time ago!
Skip Beat is a rare jem in the shoujo genre guys and girls would definitely enjoy. Although the premise of 'show-biz' has been used many times, Yoshiki Nakamura pulls it off brilliantly and completely transforms the theme.
Minor spoilers:

The story starts off strong but towards the middle of the 176 chapters the plot seemed to slow down without Sho making an appearance. It's all worth the read however, as the latest 'Heel Siblings' arc brings back the charm. I have strong expectations for this turning point in the story, it seems like the plot is starting to move and more of Ren's past will be revealed, as well as progress in Ren and Kyoko's relationship ;) Sho Fuwa's reappearance is nigh peeps!

A good mix of shoujo romance, comedy and drama, Skip Beat is a MUST read for those who haven't already done so!

Skip Beat is a really good manga. It touches on some really dark stuff, doesn't rush the plot, and also has a good sense of humor. The problem is that if you find out that you like it, be prepared to wait for it. I remember seeing this when it was first releasing chapters back in '06, and I decided to wait. Then about 8 years ago a friend of mine convinced me to start reading it, and I didn't check to see whether or not it was done. That was my mistake, because that was 100 chapters ago, and only about 4 months long in the manga time-line, which included several time skips. I've heard rumors of it coming to a close soon, but I expect that in maybe another 15 years at this pace...
The story spends a lot of time focusing on the personal growth of each of the characters. Which is one of the reasons it takes so long, but at the same time makes it so good. The characters have their fair shares of ups and downs and they have their own issues and we get to slowly see them resolving them and working through them.

The manga which started it all. (For me)

The manga which made me interested in japanese mangas and the starting point of my addiction. Any words i would use to describe it would fall short. All the characters are so well thought out and each and every single one of them has some kind of development or attribute. Even some of the more shallow characters will show personality.
While other mangaka choose to stick to stereotypes I truly appreciate the effort this mangaka makes into this manga's plot and characters.

I am giving it an 8 because of the first 130ish chapters of awesome it has given me to read, however, the Cain siblings sections is so vast and dry it's like crawling through a desert. I used to love Ren, but now I just want anyone else to win. ANYONE. Even if he goes back to what he was before, I cannot forgive him for the angst he has put the plot through. Kyoko is a good character, stubborn and persistent, but I wish she would form a REAL personality, something to make her more mature or give her more dimensions, she can only give a worried expression, be furious at Sho, or be dopey and naive. I'd like to see her develop anger at other characters, genuine love for someone, and maybe a ferocity for something than other her acting jobs.

The art at first annoyed me, but I found that it got better as it went along, but the head/body proportions will always be bad for the males.

This review sounds bad, but it isn't a bad manga, as most of it gave me genuine laughs and was entertaining. I suggest the anime too, as the voice actors are fabulous!

PS: After the Cain arc it picks up again...

number 1 shoujo

Really a can't miss manga for people who actually like character development and plot smile
its slow in the romance department but even though the love takes a back seat the actually story of the manga is original, suspensful, and carefully done. It has a very good spectrum of feelings that range from fantasy fairy world, to very dark psychological and mysterious (conserning ren's past and kyoko's past and family life). The progression of the story is good in that the main character doesn't just stumble across showbiz and become instantly famous, but must work her way up, fail and try again.
Kyoko is really a one of a kind shoujo character. while she is pure and simple minded. she is alos smart capable, hard working and instantly loveable. she is not the type to cry often or burden others. she is a strong character but also very feminen. she is into voodoo and curses as well as fairies and princesses. she has a beautiful heart that has become warped and broken by her past. and it is her journey of reparing it and living life for herself that makes this such an amazing read.
(you realy have to read the stroy to fully understand her, the rest of the characters especially ren and others like lori, sho, moko, maria, and yashiro, are just as well done but i wont go into them.)
The next best part is that it is not a typical love triangle where the too hottest guys suddenly become interested with her an duel it out for her heart. The relationships in skipbeat are very deep and well rooted. There is a real sense of RESPECT (i think many romances lack this), friendship and cemistry, between the two romantic leads ren and kyoko (even though after like 150 chapters they arn't together yet haha)

soooo please read it is my first shoujo and my favorite im sure you'll love it too smile
