Unusual education

The thought of such entertaining education had bothered me for a long time. This manga lightly presents you historically right view on economics of war and peace. I learn economics and this way is so much better than academic studying! Although it seams that there is two split mangas - about history and about their love story. It is like characters are not organically fitted into story.
It is like a new word in entertaining education. Only the first rough sketch but still.

Hmmm...

The idea of a hero working together with a demon queen is a bit unconventional but it depends on how they can pull it off. Right now, the big issue is the high frequency of info-dump which results in dreadfully slow pacing at times. As a result, I hope they can do a better job of mixing in information with the plot so it flows a bit better. Btw, I guess you could call this an educational manga. I do hope the hero will be developed better in the coming chapters as he's used just as a tool to show how clever and smart the demon queen is. He doesn't even do anything except to serve as a potential romance interest for her.

I did enjoy a bit of the moral ambiguity so far though it depends on how they'll develop the plot and the entire cast.

A breath of fresh air

After the first chapter my breath is taken away. In our quickly stagnating world of manga, filled with either battle-manga (where the hero is goody-good and the antagonist is baddy-bad) or anti-hero manga (where the protagonist is bad with redeeming qualities), this manga is (as stated in the title) a breath of fresh air. While the first 2-3 pages seem completely I've-seen-this-before, the story takes a drastic turn as soon as the conversation starts. The premise is deep while not seeming preachy, and the honest humor is retained even amidst the dark atmosphere. My only worry is that the story is so amazing that it might fly right over the younger readers' heads. Both here, and in Japan. A sparkling piece of gold in the otherwise mediocre manga world.

Good concept

This is not a typical manga and it really shows. Placing somewhat modern economics and farming methods into a medieval society and story makes this very much a what if story. While it is true that this is not a manga that I would recommend to anyone who is not interested in using their brain, it is also a rather fascinating turn on a hero's and demons theme making the demon queen the heroine and the hero her rather idiot henchman who can sometimes understand and often times not.

I am looking forward to reading more as it becomes available. A warning to anyone who wants action this manga is going to probably be mostly dialog for any foreseeable future.

Monologue-- monologue-- monologue-- rant.

After reading only two chapters I have to say I'm bored out of my mind. The art is alright but nothing eye popping. So far there are only three characters, Ms. Explanation/Demon Queen, peanut gallery/hero, and scary maid/cousin from chapter 2. The story though has been all talk and no action so far and the talk is pretty much monologues to the dumb as bricks "hero."

The overarching theme of the series looks like "the end justifies the means." The basic premise for chapter one was war was good for the economy. We have to kill each other to keep the population in check. The second chapter was poor people are uneducated dirty people who should respect their superiors and submit to society. 80+ pages of one sided rationalizations with no action. It's like watching a report by Fox news. bigrazz

edit: Since this series likes to present one sided arguments, allow me to give another short rebuttal.

Morals continued. Free markets solve everything so let's introduce some non-native species. If we teach the dirt dwellers, they surely won't poison themselves or overtax the land with this miracle food... or introduce diseases and invasive species with it. Oops! Forgot those last two considerations. We'll probably be able to hand wave it with magic/authorial intent anyway.

Now I don't hate this series. I simply don't care for its preachy nature. Trash me all you want. It doesn't change the fact that the first 120 pages are as boring as a used macro-economics textbook.

I'll be nice and say chapter four is actually interesting. It finally hinted that the series will stop dumping info like a fat man with a bad case of diarrhea and instead restrict itself to taking occasional if frequent leaks like an old woman.

Of course, it didn't hesitate to introduce your standard flat chested innocent cos-playing love rival and evil shadowy cabal. But hey, I'm your average Bleach loving Narutard so of course I'm happy to see a few tired tropes instead of the 120 pages of illustrated notes that passed for the first three chapters.

Ambiguous Morality

I never EVER pick up a series when it only has one chapter out. This is a perfect example of why. I decided to do it anyway for this series and it could potentially be very good. I really want to read the next chapter but because i couldn't wait before I have to now. sad
So far, it depends on whether the story continues with the whole struggle between...well, as soon as the chapter starts, it's just BAM! All notion of a 'good' side and an 'evil' side is out the window, no black and white. If this continues to question the justifiability of evil acts with good consequences and good acts with negative consequences, I think I will really enjoy this series. If it goes on to be some type of quest manga, that's good too, though I'd rather the former.

EDIT: It seems there was a mistake with which version is being scanlated. The art looks a lot more like this one: Maoyuu Maou Yuusha - "Kono Watashi no Mono Tonare, Yuusha yo" "Kotowaru" This is the one being scanlated.
