The writing and planning that went into the plot twists are simply superb. While story peaked at the middle and was never really able to rise back to the same level of excitement, it's still among the best series out there.
Worth reading

Well, not bad reading at all. Though I was disappoined by how it ends.

Great manga. Chapters take longer to read than most mangas but that is a good thing
They should have cut it off

The idea was pro, the art was just as great. However, they should have cut off the series after the death of L. After that, things just got more compex in a bad sense and was just about finding some way for the strong protagonist to be brought down. In addition, the author attempts to use English a number of times, but fails to use it correctly throughout the manga that is.

One of the best manga ... ever!
a very simple plot based on the intrusion of a fantastic element in our nowadays world and how it will turn the world upside down : the deathnote . To a certain extent Deathnote is in the wake of some classic like Dorian Gray's picture .
Very strong issues are raised and theme are beautiful depicted : the meaning of justice , the meaning of death like a final event which can never been fixed , the evil contract ,.
Beyond this plot this manga has 2 strong assets :
- a page turner storyline : the treatment is simply brilliant .A hitchcock worth treatment , full of suspense and tense situation.
- symbolic characters , quickly and easily you take your side .
The art is quite good also.

The first half of the story is easily some of the best manga I've ever read.. it's intriguing, thought provoking, and has a twist at every single turn and will make you think "wow, how did the mangaka come up with this?" It's easily up there with the best of these type of psychological mangas, such as Monster and Eternal Sabbath. However, the second half takes a complete turn for the worse and is put simply, horrible, not to mention the ending, which is incredibly lame (even if it does make sense.) It's a great manga overall, but because of the completely pathetic second half I'm only giving a 8.
Stop whining about the Near/Mello Arc!

Okay, this is starting to agrivate me. This is probably one of THE BEST manga series I have ever read. A+++ art, characters, story, etc. Now, some people have said it gets boring during the second arc. I completely disagree. I think the second arc definately is very interesting. Near is kind of a bland character, but Mello keeps things very interesting. I cannot speak for volumes 10-12, because I have only read up to 9, but I definately think what I have read of the Near/mello arc is more interesting than the Yotsuba Arc in volumes 5-6.
Amazing manga. Read it now. Stop complaining, people. The second half is GOOD. It's just not AS good as the first. It's up there though.

I seem to agree that this manga was good until it hit a certain point and then my will to read it just dropped off. I plan to finish it one day but I just cannot say when that will be.
