I loved it but there is a BUT

I loooved this series. It has drama, humor and plenty of character growth.
For me, the only problem is the end. If you have read it you know what I mean... I HATED THE AUTHOR WHEN I GOT TO THE ENDING.

All in all, I recommend it. I enjoyed it a lot and eventually I will re-read it and enjoy it all over again. But if the ending had been different it would have been a 10. Seriously, wth?!

P.D: keep reading comments! Everyone is so horrified LOL

This is just a suggestion but under the categories in the description of this manga there should be a title that says "girl/child falls in love with older male/guardian" or something of the sorts. If I had seen this manga under such category I would have saved some time by not reading it.

Nonetheless, this is still a decent manga, but throwing in the romance between Rin and Daikichi was a bit unnecessary in my own opinion.

Especially in regards to post-time skip.

I feel like everyone's comments about the ending being a total train wreck is very extreme. It wasn't all that sudden in my opinion; in fact, I had already considered it a very possible scenario even when I had only just started reading. I would have also preferred it if the time skip didn't happen, because I feel that a lot of character development, which would've eased some the feeling that many readers are having about an abrupt turn of events, didn't have a chance to occur.

Like everyone else, I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the manga (pre-time skip). The time skip must have happened because of an external factor as its placement is quite sudden and awkward. I think that the ending was planned beforehand because there were several hints directing towards it, but it's just that its execution didn't go quite to plan.

Please don't let the comments discourage you from reading it. I definitely recommend it.

Back in 2011 i started reading the manga (in a library near my college) and i stopped before the time skip, i was thinking "anything after won't be so great so i can postpone it a little bit. Fast forward in 2014, i decided to finish it because of the fond memories i had of the manga, well...
It was great but i'm disappointed with the ending. The concussion is conflicting with the very reason why i started the book and why i loved the characters so much so...yeah, it's a kind of complicated feeling i have right now.

But when i think about it, i think their relationship at the end is unusual but it can work since they love each other, not the same kind of love but a couple doesn't always have to love each other the same way. The real problem with the end of Usagi drop is not the situation itself but the fact that it just happended so fast. Sure, there were hints but they were really subtle so it was really surprising. In the end, life and love can developpe in a lot of ways, i just wish the author would have prepared us better for this (but, hey! even Daikichi didn't see that one coming)

Enjoyable for the most part

Things did get a little bit rushed towards the end, and it was definitely different, but overall I feel okay with how it ended. The ending was somewhat conflicting. Could have had a more clear and explored ending though to make it make more sense or something. =(

EDIT: After thinking on it some more, I am pretty angry about how it ended. I feel really ripped off. So, if I could rate the beginning it would be 8.5, but towards the end, definitely a 5 or 6. The story just changed too much, the style, pace, and the characters. I am very hurt that the mangaka would do this to not only the readers, but the characters. Cruel and unusual punishment. ... Please excuse my dramatic opinions. I would still recommend reading it, but if you want to stop reading it around when the time skip happens, no one would blame you. Of course, even with all the warnings, people are still curious to see what's so bad about the ending, right? =) So, hopefully you can imagine a better ending in your mind to set your heart at ease. =)

This manga was perfect. And I loved every single chapter up until when Rin turned into a teenager. For all you readers out there, this is the most WONDERFULLY written family manga up until ch. 25. After that, everything just went KABAAMM and yeah.

The author dropped the ball, seriously.

There's nothing more annoying than having to shuffle through reviews on here that are basically nothing more than people grunting and complaining, people taking digs at other people's reviews and opinions of manga. I don't know about anybody else, but I find that pretty annoying and not very helpful, so I'll refrain from commenting on "other people's narrow-mindedness" or how "crazy people are for liking this," etc. That's why they're called opinions, you know? Like I said, it's obnoxious, so I won't do that.

*sigh* Now that I've gotten THAT out of the way, here's what I thought of Usagi Drop:

As many reviewers have already said, I think that the first few volumes were really quite heart-warming, well thought out, competent, flowed well, and were all around great volumes. I felt like I could not only see Daikichi and Rin's day-to-day progress through their situations in life, I could also kind of feel it. From the major step of Daikichi shifting everything over in his life to accommodate Rin to simple steps like trying to figure out how to deal with a loose tooth, things that are a standard part of life, things that many of us have experienced before (time and again), the author did a marvelous job of making a great story out of those common, everyday things. I mean, the author did a really bang up job of establishing the fact that these characters were doing everything in earnest, giving it their all to make life work. You know? And I just COULD NOT get over how WELL DONE these volumes were.

Conversely, I felt that the latter volumes were not much different than your standard soap opera in many aspects--which I won't go into because so many reviewers already have--and they just felt rushed, disjointed and well, pretty darn unbelievable. :/ The entire tone of the series changed completely, and not for the better. Also, the change in relationships was just...I don't even know how or where to get started on those--especially the debacle with the "adults." The second have of this series just came across as messy and half-assed. I don't know about anyone else, but it seemed to me that the author was either told to or was inspired to take Usagi Drop into a new direction at the turn of the series, but she couldn't quite figure out how to make it work. And so...this...this train wreck of a second half is what she ended up with. This series would have been much better off without the time-skip. The fact that this series started out so great, I think, is what really makes the disarray of the second half seem so bad--perhaps even worse than it may actually be.

TBH, I feel really let down here, because the ending (which I don't really like and probably never will, btw) could have made some semblance of sense to me--had the events and story telling from the latter years up to that point not have been so bad.

My disappointment stems with the decline in quality of this series rather than the actual ending, which, again, I don't really like. But who knows? Maybe had the second half not been so bad, my opinion of even the ending might have been different.

Mixed feelings

Like many other who commented before me, I have mixed feelings about this manga. It actually started great and heartwarming, but halfway it suddenly developed an entirely new tone. Honestly I wouldn't have minded if the narrative was well written, but most of the time it wasn't. The latter chapters just felt... unplanned. The romantic relationships also didn't feel believable.

Let me tell you, before the timeskip, Usagi Drop could have easily made it into my favourites. And many before me have said it but I feel the need to reiterate it...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The ending. I don't know about everybody else, but I for one didn't read Usagi Drop for the romance. I read it because reading about Daikichi and Rin becoming a family warmed my heart. You have no idea how happy I was to have found a series like this. And sure, maybe I'm being harsh, but it really felt like the author was cheapening her work with the ending.

And anyway, I find it unsettling. I mean, putting aside the extremely problematic age gap and the Westermarck effect, I wouldn't even care about that in a different context. It's the fact that Daikichi genuinely cared for Rin as a daughter. It's one thing if it's one-sided adoration on Rin's part, but Daikichi is supposed to be a responsible adult. How can he be okay with having a child with his child? Because Rin may not be his biological daughter but you're shitting me if you say that Daikichi didn't love her like his own. How sad is that? Seriously. It might not be biologically incest (imho, it would actually be better if it were just that), but it's incest in the mind, at the very least for Daikichi.

But okay, if you ignore the last few volumes, this really is a lovely manga. Despite the problematic ending, I would still recommend everything prior to the timeskip because it really is great up to that point.

Just for clarity, THIS IS NOT INCEST. It is revealed at the end that Dai's grandfather was not rin's father!!! however, i cannot get over the fact that dai still sees rin as a daughter! the mangaka did not address this issue at all! he even admitted himself that he sees rin only as a daughter so i don't know ae...
