BEAUTIFUL...until the end!

I'M SORRY but in real life people don't change their emotions like that. I still don't understand how Rin fell for Dai! And I don't see why the author made the story turn in that direction I would have been content with an ending that ACTUALLY REPRESENTED LIFE -___- I would NEVER have emotions like with a caretaker, maybe a development of attachment and trust but pure love?

This just doesn't happen, incest with someone who were raised with and had no feeling for what so ever before does not seem realistic...

I prefer incest manga like Flower of Evil, Houyou, I love my little sister etc.

with high hopes Daikichi would end up marrying koukei's mom and Rin would get koukei :3 i know its cliche but come on, i love me some good shoujos. An good author can make cliches seem "new" and amazing. Thankfully, i read the spoilers and realized the ending is a bit too f.cked up for my tastes. really ruined any hopes of continuing reading/watching/thinking about this series for me. My shoujo girl heart is crushed sad

How shall I say it...?

The manga is very high quality all around. The art may be simple, but it has character and is quite attractive, too. I think I won't forget this style for a long time, it's probably even going to affect my own drawing style a bit.

The story is very nice too, it's not typical, but still "normal" enough to easily identify yourself and your life with it. It has depth without being complicated or hard to understand, yet it can very easily convey complicated situations and emotions.

Now, as for the slightly weird ending, here is my opinion. Don't read if you don't want to know the ending before having read it yourself:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The daughter role falls in love with the father/guardian role. Quite complicated there and the manga shows that very well.
Right up to the last chapter. That one is kind of a flop, there should've been another volume in between, showing how the father role works out his own stance and evolves it over the two years.

What really made the ending acceptable for me though, was the fact that the author treated the whole situation very carefully and with respect, that is to say, no smut or anything else that one might perceive as not as innocent and pure as the rest of the manga. It wasn't just a way to increase sales, so to say.
The ending was hurried for what ever reasons, but I could still feel the wish to make the ending enjoyable, and not just because it has the face of a scandal. It's not as simple as calling it a scandal and being unhappy with the ending, it's a very complicated situation that has taken years to grow and the manga really shows that. That's the reason I can accept the ending without any complaints except one: It's a bit too early, some more development right in front of the last chapter would've been good, so that we can understand just how Daikichi overcame his "moral horror" and why we arrived where we did.

That's the biggest minus in the whole story, the reason I'm going to give this manga an 8 out of 10, instead of full marks as the rest of the story deserves. We don't really know how Daikichi comes to his decision. "It's impossible for me to refuse Rin[...]" isn't enough, it just isn't. That's not what a (surrogate) father would say, so we need to know how he arrived there from his position as a father.

Now, I'm quite damn tired since I read the manga in one go and I suppose it shows in the wall of text, but I definitely had to write down my thoughts before going to sleep, as I wouldn't be able to do so accurately tomorrow after dreaming about it. I'll go over it once I'm rested. ~ Edited it a bit now. I hope you can understand what I'm talking about. biggrin

Not a typical josei

I enjoyed the entire series throughout. The art is simple as most josei's manga go but it is also very pretty and well drawn. The story is that of the complicated relationship between Rin and Daikchi.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It does involve an ending that for most people would believe is nothing more than a fetish's dream however I think that it cheapens the rather serious approach that the artist chose to approach the dilemma. Had this actually been a fetish's dream then you would have seen much more perversion from the get go: panty shots, awkward moments where somehow Rin ends up over Daikchi etc. If anything the artist actually tries to respect the fragility, unusual and complications that stem from Rin's feelings. She never makes them perverse but shows the struggle, heartbreak and panic that Rin has as she begins to try and understand the dynamics of human relationships. Yes the ending is one that might feel too liberal for most people but the artist made sure to have both Rin and Daikchi treat it as seriously as possible and deal with the earnest love that Rin has for Daikchi. The problem is that it's not a simple "I am your parent" because Daikchi never actually adopted Rin, they always considered grandfather of being her father, of them seeing each other in a different light. It's the fact that the artist treated it as respectfully as possible is why I did not mind the ending.

The irony of most of this is that this ending is not cliche for a josei manga at all.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The cliche thing would have been for Daikchi to have ended up with Koukai's mom.

Great manga up until chapter 30. Pretty good until the end of chapter 42. But the ending absolutely ruined it for me.

The story of Daikichi raising a child was wonderful. But the ending changed it dramatically, and in my opinion for the worse.

I really liked it, a pure story about a guy who adopted his grandfather daughter from an illicit relationship.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
But the end... man! why?! why the author corrupts such a pure story. What if Kouki ending up with Rin was Cliché? I would have liked that, I'd have liked a lot that kouki's mom ended up with Daikichi too. But it has to be such a sick ending, no matter if they aren't blood related, is still creepy that Daikichi can even think about Rin in a sexual way. :C So it sucked, it was creepy, and it broke a pure story.

I also disliked a lot Rin mom, and even more the fact that Rin was able to talk with her like nothing,

Interesting and somewhat original

A surprisingly deep story for a "josei" manga. None of the usual "young woman" fluff, instead the manga sticks to its guns and plays on and around the important part - its characters. In this regard, it's very readable and probably enjoyable for most adults. I suppose the main theme can be summed up as "doing the right thing, and what it costs you". There is a not-too-subtle change from childhood to teenage years of the heroine, that may also be a bit jarring if you're reading it in one go.

That said, the story holds very well all the way, even though ending did feel a bit like a cop-out. Though I suspect that if I read through the entire thing again, I'd get subtle hints at it - there was always that *something* between the two main characters that just didn't fit the mold of adoptive close relative guardian/daughter relationship. When you don't know how it ends, you assume that it's a part of personality of guardian, but perhaps it could be also attributed to him knowing exactly where he stood - and just how shaky his standing really was.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The ending is definitely a "feel good" kind though.

In the end, my biggest complaint is the rather bland art, even though it's somewhat fitting, as it exaggerates the clumsiness of the characters - which is a rather important part of the "feel" you get from reading the manga.

I liked this manga much more during the time when Rin was a little girl. But seeing her grow into a young woman was interesting too.

I don't dislike the ending. I actually love reading about that kind of thing in other series. But it wasn't quite what I had wanted for Usagi Drop.

I had it at 10 until the last chapters, when it went from a cute slice-of-life story to a cute slice-of-life story catering to one of Japanese's classic fetishes.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Faux-incest, that is. More specifically, father-daughter relationship.
For what it is, it's probably good, but it wasn't what I was promised when I started reading. The author possibly envisioned this as a dramatic twist, but it came across as cheating, and there's enough of this to go around that no one would need that in their manga.

To be honest, I'm not sure what what to think on this. I'm currently watching the anime, and haven't read the manga yet, although it's been on my wish list for ages.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I don't like the fact Rin and Daikichi end up together. It's creepy. Sleeping with the guy who raised you aka your dad? Really weird. And aren't they aunt and nefew too?
On the other hand I still really like this one. So I guess I'll continue watching the anime but I don't know if I'll ever read the manga. I will forgo rating this until I've watched the complete anime.
