"I have something I don't want to lose. So much so that these terrible feelings have grown."
A pianist who attempted suicide 3 times, Juri, is taken to help her aunt at a prison where murderers who killed indiscriminately are sentenced to death. There, she meets a man named Yuu who took the lives of 3 people. A mother's antagonism--a brother's death. Augustine wanted Juri to play the piano for him for his birthday and in return she requested, "and in return will you live another year for me?"
This was the defining moment of the manga.

There's no other word that comes to mind but beautiful, maybe amazing also describes it. It's a wonderful story, realistic and very well developed, you can empathize with the characters. I'm still trying to compose myself after reading it, I was almost bawling. I'm so glad I read it, I recomend it, it will make you feel glad you are alive.
Everyone should read this.

I hate to cry but for this story it was so worth it. I hate sad things and tend to avoid them like the plague so obviously i avoided this story for a long time. Too long. I dont know what posessed me to read this but i am very glad i did even though i am in tears as i write this. I hate sad/bittersweat endings more than anyone i know but i still recomend this story for everyone and anyone. If you knew me that would tell you just how amazing this is. All i am going to say is read it and have some tissues ready because you will need them.
Captured it beautifully

This is my first manga by Sahara Mizu/Sumomo Yumeko and I have to say I'm glad I gave this one a chance. Although she only illustrated the story she completely sold it for me. The whole ambience and nature of the characters are captured beautifully by her- the author definitely chose the right person for this manga. I love how Juri and Yuu's relationship was portrayed through subtlety rather than the traditional route. The love is there, and it is sincere.

It was painful... Not because of the artwork or anything the author did, but because the feelings that are conveyed are so strong and so similar to how I've felt since I was a child.
Simply put- Life is never good. We may have moments where we are happy but in reality the feelings of hopelessness and sorrow are always ever present. Both main characters try to kill themselves for equally valid reasons, but after meeting each other they find that even though living is harder, it is worth it. The bittersweetness at the end is like a sour candy. It burns and it stings at your wounds but you cant help but wanting more and more, never becoming satisfied.
I usually am not a fan of such sad stories, but this one... It made both my physical and mental scars twinge with pain. I was reminded of the slight chance of sunshine that can be give and taken away at anytime.I was reminded that I am alive.
To want to die is this painful emotion, and unless you've tried to kill yourself you wont know the true feeling. The story perfectly conveys the hope that can rise from those feelings and for that it is an amazing manga.
It is sad, bittersweet, but also hope. I suggest that if you feel like killing your self you should read it.

This isn't an easy read.
This story is something that all humans know: people are good and bad. But the way it is delivered is oh so bewitching. It's touching, poignant, (every other adjective) - simply one of the best one shots I've read. It made me cry so much, tears of joy and sadness.
I think everyone will in some way relate to the characters because we've all been lonely and sad at one point or another in our life.

I think I needed this.
For a while I've been looking for a series or anything that could really move me. And not just something sad, but something that could give me a different perspective of life and to uplift myself from negative thoughts (meaning that I cried so much it relieved me of depression..?). This series did just that. Everything was so simple (in terms of story-telling) but the amazing part about that was it still touched me while sympathizing with the characters. It makes you look at those that have been at bottom of hell but still have been dragged back to live out there lives in reflection. It's obvious how the story ends (sadly) but I still thought it was great and enjoyable no doubt.
It felt very "slice of life"-ish
Also the romance was very light, but sweet.
Small Cons:
(reasoning it only gets a 9.5) I felt it evoked human emotion well but did not portray much else in terms of character. Due to shortness (and I suppose the main focus), it didn't bring out much personality in both of the mains. Rather, it only showed their changing emotions and sorrowful attitudes as a plot/thematic enhancer. Still, it did said justice.

That was a truly beautiful work of art. Both the story and the characters felt real, and in the end it was a bitter sweet feeling. Thats the first time I've cried from a manga in a very very long time.

This is the BEST manga I have ever read. The art is good, unlike the cover(which turned me off initially from reading this). The story started off slow, and in a depressing manner, but as it progressed, everything turned better and soon, you would be cheering for the main character and hoping that the worst would not come for Yuu, although you knew it would anyway. Then, the crying would start and the ending was splendid in every way. I'm really glad that Juri forgave her mother in the end, and how her mother showed the tiniest bit of emotion when Juri forgave her, showing how the mother actually cared for Juri and is why she was not such a bad person after all. And Juri could finally find a will to live life to the fullest despite everything she had gone through.
