"I have something I don't want to lose. So much so that these terrible feelings have grown."
A pianist who attempted suicide 3 times, Juri, is taken to help her aunt at a prison where murderers who killed indiscriminately are sentenced to death. There, she meets a man named Yuu who took the lives of 3 people. A mother's antagonism--a brother's death. Amazing work. The art was great, the characters were tangible, but the story line and dialogue was what really struck me. This is a world that so little people can witness or understand. I was reluctant to read this because I felt it would make me cry, and so I put it off in an attempt to save me heartbreak and tears or whatever. When I did read it, I read all the chapters in one go.
It didn't cast a depressing shadow over me, like I expected, but slowly realized that this was reality. Death, life, regret, love... all of these and more must exist in order to reflect what living is really about. And this manga truly shows this. In the end, I did cry, if only because it was beautiful and it made me want to go out and live life like tomorrow is my last. Absolutely wonderful story.

I think it's a beautiful story, it made me cry so much !!
I haven't been that touched by a manga or a book in a long time...
It is about two people teaching each other about life and bringing each other hope and happiness....

I enjoyed reading this story a lot. It was deep and had the kind of melancholic undertone I like to read from time to time.
Others have probably stressed the virtues of the story better than I have, so I'll try to point out the flaws that made this manga a 9 in my book, not a 10.
First of all, the whole aspect of religion in the story does not seem to be particularly well done. I am very critical of religion, so I was going to be annoyed by this no matter the plot, but e.g. the Christian baptism of Yuu just seemed to have no purpose in the story. It didn't feel right. Or rather, it seemed to me that Yuu changed in enough subtle ways that a story-telling device as blunt as a major religious rite seemed to cheapen his growth as a character. That he called himself Augustine made me even blink with incredulity.
However, this is really only nitpicking or personal preference. The second issue annoys me far more because it strikes at the heart of the message this manga wants to send:
(On a sidenote, this is my first review on this site. So while I don't consider this manga a true masterpiece due to its faults, I do consider it as something quite special.)

There is so much wrong with the rape subplot. That Juri's mother hates her daughter so much she tells her to basically live with being raped is horrible but believable from her twisted point of view. That "nobody would believe Juri", is not.
A major theme of the story is forgiveness, and I agree that forgiving her mother rather than killing her seems to be the better choice - if we are limited to these two options. However, why was the option "call the police" never discussed? Juri was bleeding and had just been raped; her rapist would never have gotten away with it if she had reported it right away...
In the real world, one of the dangers of not reporting rapists is that they will just do it again. (Look up "Catholic sex abuse cases" on Wikipedia for a recent and ongoing example.) As far as I see, it is no different here. In fact, the rapist still lives, is still free and apparently came by to her mother's house in chapter 3. That makes no sense whatsoever.
Forgiving her mother in the twisted circumstances described in this manga makes no sense and seems to fall into one of the great dangers of the Christian call for forgiveness, which calls for it before any reparations or restitutions or whatever are made. That's not how it works, and it's not justice. Before forgiveness there must be restitution - be it putting the rapist into prison or (since we are in a manga) him having a mysterious accident or whatever.
Due to the absence thereof, Juri's forgiveness is cheapened and sends the message that "it's okay to be evil - there won't be any consequences" (both in the cases of the mother and of the rapist).

I was reluctant to even read this, because it didn't seem like something that was worth reading, but it popped up in suggestions quite a few times and I thought I should give it a chance. The drawing is not fantastical, but the story was just so amazing. Sure this may be just my opinion and many may disagree, but this was a good read and just tragic at the same time. As soon as I realized what was going to happen, I couldn't stop crying... silly i know...
Pick it up, you may just gain some insight on humanity. I know i did...As soon as I realized what was going to happen, I couldn't stop crying... silly i know...

a great story that you can't not love. here you can see the true meaning of pure love between two souls, that life isn't a fantasy dream -but in the same time not as dark as some mangaka like to show -, and that we are not angels yet we are not demons. in the last chapter i cried a lot wishing for yuu not to die but in the same time i knew that i would have hated it if it was for another ending -it was the only natural ending with all its sorrows-. and lastly i found the letter yuu wrote for juri simply a piece of art.

I think this manga is one you have to kind of ignore common sense to really enjoy. Sure it's a stretch to
Also, to those who are unhappy about the bad guys that aren't punished (piano tutor, bullies...), this manga isn't about that. In the end, Juri learns to forgive and live (and let live). Is that not the moral of the story? Also, with a hit-and-miss justice system, there ARE going to be those who get away (many do) and those who are perhaps wrongly convicted. That's just the unfortunate truth. Without bending/fictionalizing that truth, I think this manga did a touching job on the humane side of it all.

meet your love on death-row, and etc etc
, but it's it was otherwise a really touching story. It's optimism wasn't in the punishment and disposal of "bad guys" but recognizing life and forgiveness. It just pains me to think that Yuu will probably not have a decent burial, no matter how much that policeman had done for him...I feel bad for the policeman, too...It always hurts you the most getting close to someone who's going to die. Augustine...I like the name...it's nice... As well as Sylvia.
...It has a perfect ending...though sad. :'(

Just one thing, its not about romance. No hypes, no cliches.
Short, sweet and Sad. True to life, u know the ending but u would still be sad.
Go for it! 8 chapters will just take half an hour of ur life, but the message will prevail ur entire life.

I have no word more to say about my feeling. I don't care much about the punishment for anyone. I feel sad, while so much warm air and happiness beacause of the pictures of people who heal each other's heart. I love the art. It looks like a raw. Somehow, I saw the feeling and the world of two characters that way: not real, fantasy among their pain, past and happiness they gave each other. I can't stop crying for their feeling, hurtful and so much warm.
