Heya,

I'm looking for series that are unnecessarily dark and brutal. Where they could certainly tell the story with less graphic violence, but go ahead and revel in it anyway. One could say they're "unnecessarily edgy"

Examples; Blaster Knuckle, Berserk, Goblin Slayer, Gantz, Ichi the killer, Battle Royale, Akumetsu, etc.

I've read a lot of these, so please check out my complete/reading/ongoing reads lists if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I think you're mixing up "unnecessarily edgy" (Which is a redundant thing to say because a work being "edgy" already implies it adds nothing to work with except being perverse in the truest sense of the word) with "brutal" (Where the graphic nature of the work is used to "enhance" the world). The reason why I'm bringing this up is because saying "unnecessarily edgy" immediately causes my mind think you looking for material along the lines of the more "extreme" Ero-Guro works out there, such as Urotsukidouji and Mai-chan's Daily Life. And, straight edge leads me to think of works from Revenge Classroom and The Domestic Yapoo to Harem End.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
That isn't to say that edginess is a bad thing. There are some works that I am going to die defending (For reasons other than ideological) despite being absolute trash.

As far as brutal works, a few to come to mind are Wolfsmund, Devilman and...I want to say Judas and Spider-Man, but I'm not fully sure.

Hmmm I think you may be confused because I'm looking for both works that are straight edge AND/or brutal, by your definitions.

I also don't necessarily agree that a work that is edgy by definition is always perverse- that is often the case for sure, but with something like Vinland Saga the edge and brutality at the start are needed as framework for the character growth and moral of the story that occur later. I said "unncessarily" edgy to distinguish between something like Vinland saga and something like, say, MPD Psycho, where the edgyness is the entire point.

I also don't think edginess = trash, as your spoiler indicates, but thats beside the point.

That being said, I've read my fair share of Ero-guro and its not what I'm looking for at the moment. Something along the same lines but not hentai, like Satanister would work.

Your recommendations of Revenge Classroom and Judas are both works I've read previously that fit the bill, so I'll check out your other ones. Especially Harem end looks like it'll be good. Thanks!

I'd also throw in there:
As God of Death Dictates (FUJIMURA Akeji)
Bougyaku no Kokekko
Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw
Mao Dante
Pumpkin Night (Wait for another team to pick up on that one)
Shibuya Kingyo
Soul Liquid Chainbars

Also, when you get the chance, visit some "manime" threads as they have plenty of "rip and tear" content listed in those threads, such as MD Geist and (Probably) Space Runaway Ideon.
