I'm looking for a manga in which the characters are fully aware of the fact that they are characters in a manga. I can imagine good amounts of comedy from this setup, so I'm sure somebody must have done it.

Sometimes manga characters will refer to the fact that they're in a manga, like saying: "isn't this supposed to be a shoujo manga" or something, when there's an extended fight scene. Other than that, though, I can't think of anything. Sorry.

yeah that's the situation where I got the idea from, but I'm looking for something that takes this idea a step further, not just as side comedy.

It would probably feel a bit like watching behind the scenes of a filmset.

Don't think it's been done. All I've seen are comments like "what, that's all the panels i get?" and stuff like that. no

Gintama fits it.

There's a category for it:

I'm not quite sure but this post seems to have the manga/s you're looking for. (breaking the fourth wall = characters are aware they are characters in a manga). Most of the time though, you'll only see a character saying something like "No, this is not that type of manga" "What? I only appear on one page?" etc...

Well, it's not a manga but you can try reading comics about Deadpool (a character from Marvel)

I don't think I've ever read something like you ask, and I think the closer thing you can find to what you asked is Seitokai no Ichizon anime, especially the first episode, where the main characters (who still consider themselves novel characters) are discussing what to do in the upcoming anime and the main guy is always thinking of living in a eroge game.

Sakuratetsu Taiwahen This definitely fits the criteria you wanted. There's an arc in the plot (I think it's in the 2nd vol) that focuses on a student who got sucked into the manga world and every character in the manga world knows that they're manga characters. There's even a Manga God that discusses how bringing in a person in the real world would make the manga world more interesting.

Can only think of Paradise Kiss of the top of my head.

Here on this website if you go under the manga/anime category you find many examples. Also see the "No Fourth Wall" and "Leaning Against the Fourth Wall" pages.

Well, it's not a manga but a comic strip, but one over zero (http://www.undefined.net/1/0/) has exactly what you're looking for. The characters know from the beginning they are characters and even argue with the author. It's fun, it's brilliant and it's got bizarre plot twists.

You can read more about it here.

There's Sket Dance where they break the fourth wall regularly, the main character often makes references to how he is, indeed, the main character and one character called Roman is particularly prone to it.
