After I came across these two bits from Christopher Hitchens, I began to wonder about this age old question.
Are women really funny?
After thinking about it for some time I came to the conclusion of no. I have yet to meet a woman who was really funny.
And I've been surrounded by large amounts of women all my life. I've lived in a house with four women for 19 years and in my whole school career I've been placed in classes with a higher amount of women than men.
In all that time I never had a sense that they were funny. Sure sometimes a witty remark that might warrant a light chuckle, but not much more. Often though that remark is borrowed from some comic or male friend of theirs.
Even with professional comics. You have Amy Poehler, Sarah Silverman, Roseanne Bahr and such. But none of those have ever really made me laugh.
Imho those are nowhere near great comedians like George Carlin, Lewis Black, Ricky Gervais and I could go on.

So now you know what I think, lets hear what you think.
And I welcome all women who can prove me wrong, but we all know there are no girls on the internet.

TL;DR
Women aren't funny, discuss.

some are some aren't, just like men.

as a side note, Sarah Silverman is quiet possibly the least funny person ever. Right beside Jerry Seinfeld... All my opinion of course
: P

*agrees like a mofo*

You're right, there aren't any good female comedians, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any funny women around, you know. Maybe it's because men goof around more from an early age, or they just like to make jokes more? I don't really know. Or maybe it's because you're a guy, so you can associate yourself more with guys' humor?

Tl;dr? Yes, there are funny women. :]

(Though I have to admit that the people who make me laugh the most/hardest are usually guys, which is probably what you were aiming at. : x )

Well, I find it easier to make women laugh
than laugh to their stuff.

It's so unfair to say that women aren't funny. It's not about men or women, just some people are funny and some aren't. I'm not saying this because of my gender, I've just met as many funny women as I have men.

That was pretty much my point.
As I said sometimes a woman can make me chuckle, but that's about the most I get out of them.
And the most well known female comics aren't funny at all. Case in point being Sarah Silverman. How that woman got her own show and how there are people that find her funny is beyond me.

But the problem is that it's easier for a man to make a woman
laugh than vice versa. Sure I've seen chicks laugh their asses
off by themselves. In fact, the laughter doesn't seem to stop at
all, yet I find most of their stuff very unentertaining and I am not
really a person to seek posh humour to begin with.

So if someone finds a female comedian to be funny they don't understand humor?

I'm one of those people who has honestly seen every episode of Comedy Central Presents, and some of the (rare) female comedians to preform did just as well as some of the males.

To be honest, I prefer the stand up of Jim Gaffigan, Daniel Tosh, Steve Byrne and Mike Birbiglia, classic male oriented comedians I suppose. But then again, I can still manage to appreciate and respect the stand up of comics like Lynne Koplitz and Margaret Cho. They've made me laugh.

My thoughts. No, not every woman is funny, just like not every man is funny.

I still think it depends on the person and their sense of humor. I'm not claiming that I'm funny (cause im not...) but I have an ironic and perverted sense of humor, and I've heard some pretty funny things from both my guy and girlfriends. I will admit though, the funniest person I know is a guy, but I don't think many people can joke like he does because his timing is just too perfect.

As far as comedians go, the men on comedy central are funnier for the most part. I've only come across a select few female comedians who made me laugh.

When will these boys realize that a lot of women pretend to laugh at a man's joke, even when it's not funny?

I had such a discussion with a girl friend a couple of days ago and yes, mostly all of the good comedians are men. And if men run a comedy and there are women participating they look stupid trying to be funny or completely out of the way most of the time.

And no way this is unfair or anything. I've watched a documentary about some show and one woman said 'There are hardly females here. I think they don't want to take part in this madness' which is quite ludicrous, as like you have to be a certain gender to enjoy madness.

Well I don't even care wether I'm considered funny or not. Laughing is fun when you feel like it, and the reason you're laughing is irrelevant to me. Main thing is that you can laugh.

If the creator of this topic is a female, then women are funny.

Flannery O'Connor is very funny. So are Aoki Ume and Amano Kozue. If we're only dealing with comedians then the more pressing question is, "Are comedians funny?"

i just want to make the point that most everything, not just comedy, is borrowed from something or other.. just like in books, there's never really new material, it's just the same stories retold in new ways. -shrug- just a point~

as for the question, i don't know. xD i usually laugh at what i find funny and don't mind the gender. of course, i'm a person that only pays attention to something when it's pointed out.. ;x

i do notice a lot of people pretending to be funny and aren't really.. and they're from both genders. and i think sense of humor does have a play in it, not only does it differ from gender, it differs from person to person.

.. basically echoing what illusion said. she's a smart cookie. :]
