Hello
I am looking for a manga with this kind of plot. Actually I'm quite flexible about the age, just please include the "mentor" aspect. (I don't really know if mentor is the right word, but it was the best i could think of.) Basically I'm thinking of an older character who, for whatever reason, has picked up a younger character with some sad past, despite being practically strangers, and acts as their guardian, teacher, role model, family and/or friend as their relationship deepens. Bonus if they are traveling around or on an adventure etc.
I'm NOT really looking for mangas like Usagi Drop or Kore ha Koi on Hanashi, which focus on raising the child and the older character's growth as a guardian.
Please no BL, GL, horror.
Hope that this made sense ;/
Thanks in advance.

Uuh... try Vagabond, The breaker and maybe Vinland Saga ... but non of these really have a "young" or " teenage" mentor though :3
Ah yes.. Rurouni Kenshin too.. as Knightzomegaz has mentioned..

Dimension W perhaps, although I haven't read many chapters.
Bonus: Hinamatsuri
I've also heard good things about Lone Wolf and Cub, but haven't read it myself. However, they are blood-related.

No. 6
Both teens are about the same age, one - street smart, living outside "paradise" takes care of a refugee, not used to the world outside. Nice and deep, you could see how they learn from each other.
But rather novel, the manga has reportedly drifted a bit into shounen ai, in the novel there;s nothing of the sort, a deep friendship - yes, but love..well if you really try hard to see it then maybe.

Thank you to everyone who replied! I've read D Gray Man and Kurenai, and I'm surprised to hear that No.6 novel wasn't BL O_O maybe I'll read it...
As for the other suggestions, just reading the synopsis, they don't strike any chords, but I will check them out properly.
Thanks again

Seirei no Moribito is an anime and manga. The anime is fantastic (haven't read the manga yet).
It's exactly what you're looking for...the only part is that Balsa (the mentor) is not exactly young--late 20s, I'd say, but she's still awesome!
Er, not sure if you were looking for romance, but Balsa doesn't fall in love with her protege/the child (that would just be gross.) So if you're looking for a romantic mentor/protege relationship, this ISN'T it. But otherwise, this is one of my favorite animes of all time. The plot is strong, and so are the characters; the visuals are excellent as well.
