So Viz is bitchin' because they can't release faster than a couple of people who work on this in their free time?
So instead of picking up the pace and releasing so it's as up to date as can be, they get rid of the competition instead and still release at a shitty pace?
Sounds about right.

Can they really win though? Someone else will continue to scanlate these manga. They're way too popular to be completely halted and dropped.

It's probably because mangastream is based in america.
what if the group is based in a country that is not based in America and is based in a country that is not supported by viz media?

You realize that Viz is a subsidiary of both shogakukan and shueisha, right? Their MO is totally different from a scanlator's. It's their parent company's product, the license is essentially irrelevant because there's a direct connection.

Viz approaches translations as a publisher. I.e. you produce the truest text you can, marketed in a way that will produce the highest sales. And they do create superior translations. But superior translations take time. This is a case of instant gratification defeating competent, superior work (and you can attempt to justify this by complaining that official translations are bullshit, but as a writer who reads and speaks Japanese I can tell you confidently that they are not.)

Well, we've had this debate thousands upon thousands of times over the years. The reality is that the legal framework will eventually come around to Viz's side of the table. I would recommend suggesting alternative methods of distribution to the company itself, rather than complaining about scanlators shutting down when a legal source is readily available.

@Stark: Pretty sure that's irrelevant. Viz is just one face of a larger corporation. The point is that the original publisher does not enjoy scanlations. They never have, and they never will, and because (despite new age nonsense arguments to the opposite effect) publishers are actually rather integral to the industry as a whole, so unless they become convinced otherwise, they'll eventually win out with the titles they have a legal means to protect.

Though, let's face it. That would just move everything back to irc.

I'm so sad.. o(╥﹏╥)o

edit: some of you guys aren't thinking too clearly; Viz has no intentions of letting ANYONE scanlate their licensed manga. mangastream was the quickest and best quality provider, it would be surprising if Viz did NOT attack them first. now will they really go as far as to threaten every scanlator? who knows, but eventually we will only be receiving low quality scans. not only that but now that mangastream has lost their most popular manga it means less fans, less fans means less attention and motivation. eventually they will be another closed down scanlation group. maybe i'm thinking way too far ahead but Viz thinks that scanlators are at fault for relatively low sales so they'll probably want to crack down ever other scanlator too.
and no one wants to wait months for one damn volume. i understand good quality or even "superior quality" but mangastream brought that in 1/100 of the time it takes Viz.

*sigh* honestly, even though i only truly cared for naruto in this case, it still boils my blood when companies break down scanlators. yeah, i know they are the legal distributors but i would have never bought a single manga if it weren't for scanlators.

I'm so tired of all this whining between the companies and the scanlation groups. Give me my manga and I don't care where it comes from.

oh god i had to stop at superior translations... that shit made me lol so hard i couldnt stop...

you run a buisness, you see manga as for kids, do you...
A make a faithfull translation, even if that meas keeping nudity, bad language, and culture shock
or
B adapt it to america, make a britnney spears reference, have them eat a hotdog, and change SHIT (given the contest of the word, could mean shit or fuck, but went with shit) to darnit, my friend just got killed in front of my eyes but all the rightness in me allows me to only yell darnit.

official translators have shown time and time again, they will fuck the fan base who read scanlations to try and get a younger and more of an everyone potential fanbase.

higher quality my balls,

lets also bring up negima, where in the first 3 volumes i believe they translated thousand master to southern (or northern i forget which direction) master, and i have seen the letters they used, there is no way in hell you could have gotten a direction out of them, piss poor translation job, and do they offer a free replacement, no, we have to buy a more correct version...

japan doesn't not give a damn about over seas sales, they make their money back on their own, ad its shown time and time again in how they sell both anime and manga, and over sea sale is extra frosting on a cake thats already frosted. i honestly want the american side of the industry to go away and die, i buy an anime, 6 episodes per disc, and if i want to watch it i have to sit through 2-3 minutes of ads before im even at a dvd menu, or with manga, i have to put up with someones who gives more of a fuck about selling more and more than making a quality and timely product, you know why they dont put them out faster when god knows they could? its because they dont want to "over saturate" the market, so we get stuck waiting years at 2 release a year for it to catch up.

if there was any part of legitimate releases i liked, i would say it, the dub for cowboy bebop and black lagoon are great, and genshiken manga i believe was ONE of the VERY FEW that got treated with care in america... otherwise we get crap...

i know this is rantish, but dammit im so sick of people shitting on what i like, if i could learn japanese and get the originals, i would have, but years of trying say i cant.

Look, I'm experienced at this. You're an amateur. If you want to say I'm wrong, fine, but I hope the rest of the people here are intelligent enough to understand that I'm coming from a place of objectivity, especially considering you couldn't even bring yourself to read the entirety of my statement.

You know what's funny? The things you talk about being censored don't really exist. I mean, sure, a company might drop a panty flash that doesn't work in the US market, but these are comics marketed at kids. The things you seem to object to vanishing are typically gratuitous insertions courtesy of the speed scanners. The "B" problems are all hallmarks of good translation. I'm sorry you don't like them, but you know what? The feeling is identical to what it is for the average Japanese audience. If that's embarrassing for you, fine, but the reality is that those references are included for the sake of maintaining flavor continuity. Direct translations fail to do this, which is something any good translator knows, and something some random internet drone who doesn't know much about the art form of translation really has no business complaining about out of turn.

Yes, there are exceptions with companies new at the translation game. You know what happened to the guy who made that mistranslation? His ass was fired, and they got someone better. That's what a professional company does. You know what happens when a scanlation translator makes a mistake? The public either fails to notice or shrugs it off. And nothing changes, and more mistakes are made.

I won't go into the marketing, too deeply, but Viz is run by Japanese companies. It exists solely because they have those interests, so clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.
