Bleach / Death Notes ...

... No... Bleach and Death Note are perfect shounen material... maybe DN, but I feel the content it has isn't enough to be seinen. Bleach is definitely shounen though.

I think Akumetsu should be seinen... and Franken Fran.

bleach is a typical shounen. at the end the good ones win, only the bad ones die (in back-flashes some good ones can die, but not in the time the manga plays). don´t base your whole thinking on a online-review

Deathnote is just slightly borderline, a little more than usual Shounen but not necessarily Seinen yet. As a Seinen it would be pretty Shounen actually, though it would perhaps be a possible rating.

Shigurui is a Seinen in every relation imo, exept for the official demographics which is stated as "Shounen" due to its appearance in Champion Red.
-Massively explicit violence/gore, lots of blood, precise and detailled crossections through cut bodies
-Explicit display of sex in partially pretty sick backgrounds (almost incest etc.)
-A cruel and disgusting world (madness, bloodlust, incontinence, crippling, psychic cruelity, torture, barbaric punishments)
-The storytelling and characters aren't superficial. It's sometimes hard to understand their motives and ways (although possible), it's not a flat type of story,
-A mainly realistic world and precise display of japanese feudal system. Only "exceeding reality" in details (sometimes fighters are "a little stronger" than humanly possible for example and swords perhaps cut a little too good, but the basic scenario is extraordinarily realistic especially for a samurai scenario!)

So, graphics fit for adults only, a most serious world/scenario, storytelling and characters easily deep enough to compare to very most Seinen. This is Seinen every way I look at it, as it's not suited for children in any way and definitly no Josei.

I always joked about Gintama being a seinen manga because of the amount of dirty jokes and blatant male nudity. But, it doesn't have enough naked women to constitute it. biggrin

Someone mentioned Shigurui, I would agree with that.
Easily one of the most graphic mangas I've read.

Most of the manga with genres of both adult and shouen... how is that even possible?

While I could see Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei as a seinen, I think I understand why it was published as a shounen. Just like the youth in many countries, many Japanese youth are deeply troubled and I suspect they're somewhat aware of certain issues in their societies. They often also harbour deep anger and resentment 'cos there's almost no one to confide in.

Even if they might only understand part of the content, reading the title gives them the opportunity to laugh at themselves and to think about things.

depends on how people define seinen...if a manga with a stupid plot but explicit violent scenes should be a seinen then i dont see how the older audience will enjoy it...battle royale is the best example...the psychological content wasnt heavy at all..the characters were full of flaws and it was very unrealistic(considering how the whole point of the story is dealing with the inner demons or whatever you call it) also the violent scenes were very unrealistic i felt like it was there just to gross the readers out...overall i totally had the shounen feel when reading it,i didnt feel like i was reading something mature at all

Death Note is definitely not seinen. But I'd say Zetsubou Sensei and JoJo's Adventure should be a seinen manga. I don't see how those two got into Weekly shounen jump.

No, Death Note is definitely Shonen. Its just slightly more mature than the kind've stuff you usually expect from modern Shonen manga.

agreed

sometimes GTO

Don´t really get why GTO should be a Seinen? There´s no Violence, Gore or excessive nudity that could possibly fit in the Seinen genre. It´s a Shounen, not a typical one, but definitly a Shounen.
Same goes with Death Note, it´s "deeper" than most Shounen Manga, but still is a Shounen because there isn´t the ingredients that is needed for it to be a Seinen.

If you want a good example of a Seinen manga, read Shigurui. Violence, a big dose of Gore and mature content that involves sex. To be honest, I´ve never read or seen such a gore manga like Shigurui. A perfect Seinen, by other words.

Even One Piece is graphic in nature for a child's series. What really separates the two is just who are you targeting rather than what's appropriate.
