I would call Tokyo Crazy Paradise pretty shonen, but the artwork is shojo and there is a pretty dumb love story involved.
Tokyo Crazy Paradise originally ran in Hana to Yume, therefore it is shoujo, no more to be said. 😛

agree with you there, actually I always though it was shounen till I saw it rated as a shoujo genre, mainly cos there is so much action and fighting involved.
melee86, black lagoon is also a seinen manga, don't be confused...
ahhh... well, I stand corrected, it was just a recommendation....

Tokyo Akazukin has a really amazing female lead. Really complex and dark. Not for the faint-hearted, though, since the manga contains explicit child abuse.
There's also Chocolat, which the stars the daughter of a yakuza boss.
If you're feeling unfortunate, Arigatou's anti-heroine is guaranteed to make you feel like the luckiest bastard on earth.
Other shounen/seinen titles with female leads are Gunslinger Girl and of course Ghost in the Shell.
EDIT: Ha ha, looks like you guys aren't looking for seinen titles. In that case, ignore my suggestions...

Sorry, I was pidgeon-holing the genre. I don't really care what genre it is, though I don't like how dark some of the senien manga are. Sometimes I simple group everything that isn't Shoujo as Shounen without thinking. Mainly I can't stand the Shoujo art style or I might actually try reading them.
I also noticed there are no real 'shounen' series like Naruto, One Piece, or Bleach which have a female lead except maybe Fairy Tail, which I have only really started. So again I just generalized. Still, I am glad that people have taken an interest and have offered some good reccomendations.
Anyway, I'm going to update my list now. Anyone can argue with the validity of these titles. Once again, they're not neccesarily 'pure shounen' I'm just including titles from every genre that interests me.
Jinki
Jinki Extend
Hayate Cross Blade (debatable - is it shounen/shoujo?)
Dorothea
Stray Little Devil
Dragon Eye
Kamisama No Tsukurikata
Ikkitousen
It is also interesting to me that a lot of recent anime have turned toward using female leads in roles that would typically be filled by male (Seirei no Moribito for example).
EDIT: I forgot to mention that a couple in there have not been scanlated

Wow. I haven't really heard of many of those. But shonen mangas rarely have a female lead because they're shonen.
Personally, I like mangas that are both shoujo and shounen, though I definitely like shounen better.
try Basara it has female lead and some action but well it's shoujo ^^

A new one I recently found - Orfina from Orfina and Orfina SAGA. It's pretty Senien and pretty tragic, with lots of death and reality of war in a fantasy setting.
Also, for something lighter, the Kaze no Stigma manga appears to focus more on Ayano, even moreso than the anime. The style looks somewhat shoujo-ish, but oh well.

i'm not sure but i think that the chick in Kimagure Orange Road kinda shares the lead with the guy. Um..also shakugan no shana is a cool one. dunno if ranma 1/2 might be considered..prolly yes. umm tryyotsubato but that is seinen.....you can check simoun if you want but that's yuri, dunno if u have a problem with it..with that manga/anime you can't tell cus everyone is born female, and chooses which sex they wish to become at age 17.

Chrono Crusade, Yotsuba&!, Time Guardian, Uzumaki, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Sôten no Kômori (its a one-shot though), Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa, Excel Saga, InuYasha, Saikano, Rubbers Seven, Iono the Fanatics (although its yuri), Murder Princess, Tetragrammaton Labyrinth (although its shoujo-ai), King of Thorn.. I think that should do it.....for now...

It's hard to say wheter this is shounen or seinen. It's horror, but if it were senien I imagine it would be ten times gorier. The artwork is pretty cute, too. And it's got some nice yuri potential.
Like when the cat merges with Yoriko in ch 7, turning her into a cat girl. I LOL'd.
