People like to be scared sometimes... Rushes the andrenalin laugh
Anyway, what's so wrong with loving horror? Many people don't like yaoi, so what?..
Leave them be^^

I'm not a fan of the horror genre myself. Not that I get scared easyly- I don't.
I just don't find it so attractive.
But of course, there are exseptions.
I'm more old-fasioned, so I like themes that go further into the past.. The more elegant past that is.

Nineteenth century gothic horror is fine.

And often times scarier than modern horror.

btw, i do belive you ment Are and not Is, since there are two subjects, in that sentence, and all that, idk, been a bit since classes for me

xD
oh well.

I'm not an expert, but isn't that right too? .__. If you take "Horror anime and manga" as one subject, instead of interpreting it as "Horror anime" and "Horror manga" which would make it two. Depends on interpretation, I guess.

If he said; "Horror anime and horror manga is just stupid." Now that would be just wrong. But because the 'Horror' encompasses the 'anime' and 'manga', it can be viewed as one subject.

This is all just speculation though. laugh

As for the topic on-hand. -.-;;

I even highlight the genre "Horror"; so yes I like the genre~ One of the few genres where I will overlook bad art.

Yeah, yeah.. it should be "are".. but what the heck.~

Why would you overlook bad art in a horror manga, though?

... Because I'm interested in the genre? -.- But only a little though. xP

The ones I really don't care if it has bad art or not is 'psychological'. Always interesting to read, and doesn't need pretty pictures, as it represents the chaotic mind within us.

Whether someone likes horror or not is entirely dependent on his/her tastes. If you are gonna ask people for recommendations obviously a few people are gonna make some suggestions that you would dislike.

Trying to understand another's tastes is an exhausting and twisted road. It's best not to think about it.

^Good question.

It is, and I'll try explaining.

I guess you can't really overlook it...

It's not about technically good artwork though, it's about the good use of atmosphere, shading, toning, surroundings and most important of all, facial expressions.

Take a manga where you have rather solid art, with a typical warehouse setting, pretty character designs you've seen countless of times in other mangas and good shading and toning that falls on the right places. (I'm thinking of Rabbit Doubt here- the storyline was good tho`)

This in itself is rather good, but think of what makes horror movies great: it's the special lightning, the sometimes skewed colors, the special angles-- compared to a regular Hollywood movie, pretty special effects&co.

Same with manga. A little skewed shading here, odd toning that doesn't seem to fit in, bizzare lineart and bizzare facial expressions can make alot for the atmosphere. Otherwise it all seems a regular manga with a scary story...I'm not going into details onto how much characters, dialogue and plot matters, because that's not the point. I only explained why artwork matters alot in horror mangas.

If the mangaka doesn't get the art of making a moody atmosphere, then it's all just a work with good artwork that lacks that "wow" factors that make horror mangas so good. If the mangaka grasps the art of making the atmosphere then it can make that special "something", the difference between a good horror manga and an excellent horror manga.

^That was what I was thinking. Skewed angle shots, harsh shading, etc. to add to the tension of the piece.

I would like to reiterate what I mean when I say 'horror'. I mean it in the contemporary sense, i.e. media such as "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Saw". For the purposes of this thread, a psychological thriller is different.

Question is still open.

Why do people like horror manga? I personally hate it with a steaming passion, but every time I ask for recommendations, the horror suggestions flow in. Can anyone explain this phenomenon of people gravitating towards the gore and such that is inherent in horror manga?

I love horrors like Higurashi. Man, when I first read that, I was so scared to go to bed that night.

Horror, why? More like Yaoi, why? -.- I don't like it when people suggest Yaoi... to someone who doesn't ask for it at all... and who is a guy. o.o;;

Does a question like this need to be asked? Is it too hard to accept someone who likes something that you dont?ಠ_ಠ

Some people just like to be scared, they like the feel of the adrenaline rush, the pounding of their heart, and then the "high" after the scare is over. Its the same reason why guys like action, it gets their blood pumping. Im sure a lot of people have thier personal reason for liking "horror", but that is no reason to question a persons mentality and have them prove you otherwise

I am rarely scared by any manga. Not all horror mangas are the same, you know. As long as there's a good plot and good characters, I don't mind that a manga contains horror elements. No need to hate it. There could be good ones for any taste. When asking for suggestions, you just tell them that you don't want horror.

Way to bump a year old topic.
I think manga certainly can be frightening. But I guess it depends on the person and their exposure to the horror genre. I'd consider myself quite desensitized and accustomed to horror, being able to sit through the most gruesome and shocking of scenes without wincing.
But there are definitely some manga titles that manage to creep me out. Mostly psychological horror such as Seeds of Anxiety, or the works of Umezu Kazuo, where the scenario or premise is quite terrifying and chock with atmosphere and paranoia.
Then there are manga that are just plain visually revolting and disgusting, such as Hino Hideshi and Maruo Suehiro's manga. Ero-guro and things like that.
