I like a lot of them. I read quite a few. But if I had to pick one that stands out for me it would be one piece. Emotional without getting you depressed. Cool art style and amzing characters and enless abilities. Good fights too. Even though there is almost no romance (not much in any shounen) it's sill my fave shounen and all time favourite manga so far. Others are pretty close though. bigrazz

Well, as far as what I term "mass-market shonen" series go, there are only 2 contenders for me (because they have different focusses).

In the 'action/adventure' category, there can be only one: Groove Adventure RAVE (butchered in the west as Rave Master). I own all 35 Japanese release volumes and it is AWESOME, especially in the last 6 volumes. Even though I can't really read it (my Japanese is enough to get a good idea of what people are talking about in about half the scenes and I can usually guess the rest) it's a great story with fantastic action scenes and characters.

I could go on for ages about what sets it ahead of the rest of the pack (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc) but put simply: no training stories, constant influx of new yet INTERESTING characters, some awesome powers and abilities among both heroes and villains (including one of the coolest swords ever), some good humour, great action scenes, a seriously dramatic plot and one of the best leading couples I've ever read in a shonen series (the average mass-market shonen I've seen uses romance only as an aside, which I think sucks, but here their relationship is prominent). I so hate Tokyopop for screwing up the translation (as they do with all shonen series) but at least it's better than it used to be.

The winner in the 'sports' category has to be Eyeshield 21. This one I DON'T need to explain.

I don't read much shounen (I'm one of those chicks who enjoy mostly shojo and yaoi; although, that doesn't mean I'm biased against any genres), but I do have a few favorites (not in any specific order)...

I"s (current fav, just read the 13th vol today)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Bleach
Rurouni Kenshin
Saiyuki
(this is considered shounen, right? confused)
...and School Rumble, but really, is this considered just shounen?

And when asked "Best Shounen", does that mean shounen anime too? I just want to make sure cuz that would mean I have quite a few more to add laugh

Saiyuki[/b] (this is considered shounen, right? confused )

A. yeah I"s is a great shounen
Spoiler (highlight to view)
weird but nice ending though

B. I'm interested in reading Saiyuki.
Would you (or somebody else) mind spoiling me a bit with some extra information. Does it have a good ending, drama?, is there romance, is it coldblooded, are there monsters.
I don't need a review or another summary, just some general facts smile

The following manga's are all shonen manga's that are top-ranked (rating=10/10) on either my reading list or complete list.

1) Demon King (aka king of hell)
Awesomeness, the story starts off with this legendary warrior, so he already has the title of the strongest, but it seems it will be taken to the test pretty soon. ONGOING (looks like slow scanlating)

2) History's strongest disciple Kenichi
The anime is good to even though some people don't like kenichi's voice. Kenichi starts off as the underdog, but he gets training by some fearsome masters. Lot's of great comedy, not realy much ecchi-ness. Nice fights & techniques.ONGOING

3) Mahou Sensei Negima
Great manga, there is also Negima Neo that covers the same story/characters, but slightly different. A boy from the magic world with great potential (son of a legendary wizard that mysteriously disappeared) becomes the teacher of a class full of girls... and lives with them offcourse.ONGOING

4) Mx0
Nice! This guy somehow gets accepted in a magic-school where he has to make sure that nobody finds out .. that he can't use magic ^^ Comedy ensured, some light romance too.ONGOING

5) Open Sesame
Great series. I realy realy hope animewaves would scanlate this stuff faster. (they're realy slow). The guy is kind and all but is also a talented boxer, thus he's not some sort of underdog. Love triangle is there too, but we all alreay know wich girl he'll eventualy choose.ONGOING

6) Rosario + Vampire
A nice guy gets enrolled in an academy of ..MONSTERS! He's the sole human out there and he'd better make sure nobody finds out. But luckily he gets a few good friends like a beautiful supervampire... I like how extra information is given about the types of monsters that are being mentioned. ONGOING

7) Katsu!
Boxing manga of some sort. Adachi manga by the way. And as expected of adachi we have the comedy & romance genre, with some action too. Happy ending, even though he could have done a better job 'describing' that happy ending. COMPLETE

The following manga's are all manga's that aren't given the classification of shounen even though I can't tell the difference with actual shounen. All are again top-ranked (rating=10/10) on either my reading or complete list.

8) Psychic Academy
Mystery manga as well. You could say there is some sort of romance there but the serie isn't about that. We get some action, answers and supernatural activities. The main lead seems to have some sort of superability among the superabilities.. that he can't really use.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Eventually he becomes "the master of the universe" even though this is NOT a fighting manga of some sort"
There is some drama as well, but I liked the ending. COMPLETE

9) Parallel
Compare this with pastel. Guy meets girl and falls in love with here but they turn out to be non-blood-related-siblings. Some comedy happens and eventualy
Spoiler (highlight to view)
their parents arent going to marry, so they will stay boy & girl and not brother & sister
Happy ending, 4 volumes thus short read. COMPLETE

10) Lilim Kiss
Nice !! Light read, romance is there, comedy is there too. A guy gets the demon lilim and she seems to take a liking of him because he 'tastes' better than the others. 2 volumes short thus it reads fast and good. Happy ending, if there's something wrong with this manga it would be that it was too short smile COMPLETE

11) Kurohimé
A lot of action and light-romance. The guy spouts about justice like kenshin a bit. The story is a bit pridictable for the first chapters (doesn't bother at all though) but now with the last release (ch7, miraculously renamed as vol3:ch4) it seems the story will be getting a lot more interesting soon. Not that much ecchi-ness and some comedy as well. Note that the picture given at the description page does not realy fit the series (yet?)! ONGOING

Uhhuh eyes those are all highly recommended for shounen lovers !!
Go check them out .... NOW! cool

ps: there are more shounen top-rated manga's (10/10) on my lists, but those I decided not to post since they've already been discussed more than enough.

--- EDIT: I just catched up with the series 'kurohimé' and so I decided to update this post of mine, especially since it seems this post is still the last one of this thread ---

I still have two volumes to go of the original series, but it's sooo awesome. I can't believe I didn't discover it sooner eek
No romance, but there is quite a bit of violence (it's an action manga after all bigrazz )
There are a lot of crazy demons and that's about it when asking about monsters. Pretty much all the antagonists and bad guys are demons so yeah...
It's basically about 4 guys traveling west to find out why all the demons went crazy bigrazz or something along those lines...I highly recommend Saiyuki eyes

Alright, I like it when there's romance but I won't miss out a highly recommended action manga cool
Besides the name Son gokou sounds familiar biggrin (~db)

Don't know when I'm gonna start reading but it's on my "to read next" list as of now!
