Hm... Pretty interesting.
And actually I thought Negima was over because it ended there. I don't think it could have gone much longer after the last few chapters...

with or without asuna, there was a crap ton of story left. and allot that wasn't explained, granted much of the story would have been a time jump style, but still so much left untold.

I think it's reasonable to assume that the last few chapters were written the way that they were specifically to bring an end to the series. It seemed to me to be a rush to resolve or epilogue the biggest loose ends as quickly as possible.

As for the law, it is interesting and concerning. I think if it passes, there will be problems.

I have not read the law itself and to get all your information from one source that disagrees with said law... I do think that it will give problems if the rights of the companies are just as strong as the rights of the authors. But if there are limitations to the companies rights like not being trade-able, not doing anything against the authors will and compensation for the use of the rights.
Therefore I'm a bit scared about the "equal" part, but since it was between " " I don't how equal "equal" is.

(And if the copyrights work like in the Netherlands permission is enough from one of the rights holders, meaning that if the author gave the ok the company has no way to stop it.)

Also I think that in certain manga with mangaka/writers in it the editor does play a huge role in it. But that should mean the editor would get some rights, not the publisher.

As someone pointed out in the comments on that site, there is no law.

Nothing has been proposed or written, this is entirely premature, no reason to be so alarmed. Akamatsu just opposes the idea so vehemently that he's jumping the gun a little. Probably shouldn't be used as an excuse for his bad writing, either.

You all freaked out about that Tokyo ordinance too, and aside from a few token gestures, it's still just a paper tiger. Society hasn't come crashing down, nor has the industry.

Heh, if I understood correctly, it looks more like an author slavery and not "equal rights against piracy". Publishers would be able to act without authors agreement (most likely without knowledge too), while author himself wouldn't be able to leave publishing company (if he decides it did not proved to him good enough) without leaving his fortune behind. And I bet everyone understands piracy won't be solved this way (it's not even that huge of a problem in Japan anyway). Nah, I doubt they'll go thru with this law. If the publishing companies are so eager to fight for control, I imagine there's even a bigger competition and fights inside those companies.

+ like Crenshinibon mentioned, it's too messy and would basically be impossible to make it legal ^^ Not the way it looks now.

They probably wont be able to stop piracy just like so many others in many other forms of entertainment have all failed (gaming, movies, music, etc). The pirates will likely always emerge victorious. Its just an endless struggle with no reward.

its not against pirates its something proposed to give more rights to publishers. no thanks they f'ed up enough great series ex. double arts marugoto anju gakuen and mx0 to name a few, and that was just by being able to cancel them. i dont even want to think about how much damage they could cause if they had the ability to make spinoffs and continuations without the authors consent. Then there is also the fact that they get way more cash they dont deserve.... publishers suck(at least the ones that are proposing this idea, and the ones that cancelled the above series)....

...so, you think that series which failed with the Japanese public would have been able to keep publishing (not to mention make it even as far as they did) without publishing companies and editors?

The idea is really laughable. They didn't fail despite being good, there just wasn't a real Japanese audience for them. When your only supporters not only fail to speak the same language, but also make a point of never legally purchasing your work, you don't have a very successful business model.
