Hello everyone!
I've been on the look-out for some new anime/manga to fall in love with lately. It's been slow, I need some help.
My favourite bit is always the cast, and the more the merrier, as they say.
So I'd love a recommendation for a series with a big, lovable cast of original characters, any genre (just so long as it isn't harem, I HATE harem D<).
+PLUS+
-Strong female characters
-Lovely art (if it's in anime, good animation, bad animation makes me sad)
-Ridiculously complicated love triangles
-NON-straight characters
--MINUS--
-Weak females
-Tasteless fanservice
-Macho humor
Also, if it's mainstream, I've heard of it.
Wow, I'm picky. Sorry guys D:
Thank you though...

Bokurano - I get the feeling it's not actually what you're looking for, unless falling in love with them also allows for your heart to get broken every three chapters or so. Technically it fits your criteria and most of your pluses though...

If you're looking for an arseload of characters Legend of Galactic Heroes is the first thing that springs to my mind. The number of named characters in the main series (110 episode OVA) and side stories is over 600. They actually have the character's name appear on the screen when they do to try and keep things comprehensible.
Not on this site but you can find out more here and they do have some release info here.

Tsukihime
Genshiken
Rave Master might be too mainstream for you. I don't know; the manga never got the exposure it should have gotten.
anime:
The Twelve Kingdoms
Books:
Boogiepop series

Well, some of the female roles in Koihime Musou are strong.
...But there is a lot of fanservice.
