one word: fiances

I know it still happens in Japan, but in manga it's so bad that either:
a) every rich person in Japan is getting married this way
b) the engagements are broken so often the adults have gotta be morons for keeping up this antiquated institution.

Even though they pull the fiance nonsense, Ouran and Special A both have better examples of how parents really ensure rich kids all end up together: private schools and childhood friends. All the SA kids are constantly around each other, so only one of 'em is dating below class, and even he's staying within the social circle.

my idea of the worst shoujo cliche:

when the guy grabs the random chick he just met
and says to his friends/people who are picking on her:
"she's my girl"
makes me barf dead

I Like you!!!1

..ah yes. we gotta shoot Minami Kanan for that. That's liek her 'trademark'.

-The rape then love plots.
-The love at first sight plots.
-The virgins at 18,20+ being raped and then falling in love.
-Having a really dumb heroine who doesn't see the guy's in love with her.

Nothing more comes to mind at this moment~

I love shoujo with all its corny romance, but I could do without the falling in love with the guy who raped you. ._.; Come on now, let's be serious.

I also hate when everyone hates the main girl, then suddenly, she's popular with everyone. roll eyes

That's why I stopped watching Kaleido Star. It's not a shojo but it's the same idea.

Most cliche line:
"You're the worst!"
If you see that, it's automatically shoujo manga.
Also, when the a popular guy hits on a quiet girl as a joke and the quiet girl takes it seriously. Later on, the popular guy finds more about the girl and they fall in love.
Both are really common.

usually said after the first forced kiss...even when the heroine "likes" the main guy xD
That is so funny! My sis and I say that all the time when we laugh at shoujo plots.
and this one "That sort of thing" <---what is that SUPPOSED to mean anyway? It isn't always about "H" things either~

Yeah and grabbing a random picked on chick and claiming a false relationship is overused as well.

Apart from all the cliches mentioned, I hate it when characters confess their "love" for people they barely talked to before, saying something like "please go out with me" or "be my boyfriend/girlfriend". This cliche can be found not only in shoujo but also in shounen and even seinen and josei too (even Vampire Girl has it, damn).

It's rare to find those who really get to know someone, really talk to them saying something with substance and be friends with them if they are attracted to them, instead of immediately wanting to become boyfriend/girlfriend with an almost stranger. Yes, there's attraction (mostly to their looks but they know nothing about the other person's manners, taste, life style and values or they don't care about those as someone mentioned that the Japanese place more emphasis on conformity rather than individualism so they make assumptions?) and you have heard things about that person (usually in school). But how can you want to be a girlfriend/boyfriend just because of that? I really don't get it. Neither of the parties knows where the relationship will lead to if they don't get to know and become friends with each other first.

Maybe it's because the definitions of "going out" and boyfriend/girlfriend in Japan are not what we know of and their culture's view on romance is different. It is still annoying to see that in manga. It makes the characters and story very immature and stupid. A lot of characters often whine about being rejected. Who wouldn't reject such a confession from an almost complete stranger?

And, some shounen/ecchi/harem manga like to specify the exact sizes of females' breasts, butt etc. It can even be the theme of the manga, which I find pointless and tasteless. Of course it's good to draw attractive females. But why don't they look at the person AS A WHOLE and as an individual, appreciate personal styles and sense of humor, etc, rather than specific size of a body part? A lot of girls are insulted when they are called a "flattie". Why can't flatties, tomboys, etc attractive as I have seen many attractive examples in RL. We think everybody is unique but what kind of message are those Japanese trying to tell their young boys? Those manga are also evidence of their not appreciating individualism.
