Well, in the uni that I'm in right now, it seem anime is more readily accepted than manga. I would say that 1% of the population reads manga compared to around 30% that watch anime. and guese what? They knew only of the mainstream ones like bleach n naruto.

It kinda sad for me cos i got whole cupboard of manga, yet no one to share about it no. well, that's life as they said it.

Kinda to cheer you guys on, I'm actually a Junior Lecturer at the @#$% Uni. in KL and we're talking about 50,000 people in campus right now. eek So, if you're thinking that reading manga is for kids, then keep on fighting then.I'm old enough to be your father yet i still like it.

Some people read manga in my school, but they're not hated for it (only like 2% of the people actually read it). Because barely anyone knows what it is besides the asians. But there is no one in the school as obsessed as me. Only my close friends know how obsessed I am.

I'm in a school that's designed for nerdy people. I think everyone knows what manga is, and about half have at least read some of it. Bleach is really popular there for some reason (not Naruto as much, thank goodness). Nobody thinks reading manga is weird that I'm aware of. My english teacher practically begs us to read more graphic novels (yeah, I know that's different), and Junot Diaz (2008 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction) talked about how much he loved Monster. Good stuff.

we have a manga section in the library like death note, naruto, inuyasha and dbz but people rarely read it only 4 percent of the school pick it up, some see anime but its all small talk, ive never seen somebody being called a nerd for reading it, majority of the kids use as a time killer when there on the library and bored.

though i normally think that there should be some kind of divine retribution for reading yaoi...what those girls did is plain wrong...and badminton is fun to play : (

well i just got into yaoi...i like shoujo more (they don't even know what shoujo is)...and it not just that....they even hate anime; how can you hate the classics u.u (i.e. Sailor Moon and DBZ). I hate that i live in an 99% populated white community. I look white, but i'm mixed (native american/white/black/asian...everything you can think of -_-)

I just wish that people weren't so ignorant >.<

er...i don't think you should blame it all on the whiteys...i'm one and i live in a 100% white community and i've yet to find someone who hates DBZ, once i even had a talk about an episode of DBZ with my university professor laugh

...though most people view manga as a any other comic...

It's probably that those girls are...well, what the french speaking man said few posts before...

btw...hold on to your shoujo...please none

@bedop: don't worry...I'll stick with shoujo for a very long time ^^

@aneste: No...i'm not saying all whites are against it...just the ones that live in my community...heck i'm white! It's just that people with different cultures tend to accept it more. Plus most of the girls in my school are preppy and only care about shopping -_-
Anyway...I was giving an example of a classic. I think that you must like the classics to fully appreciate manga today (ex: Astro Boy). I personally love Sailor Moon, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion ^^

Forgive me for 'poking my nose in' here but... well, I wouldn't really say that myself.

See, a lot of Japanese people really dislike Manga. I think it comes down more to individual preference, as oppose to culture. Living in an area with a large, say, Asian community would not necessarily be much different =3

Manga is "Man-what?" in my uhh... educational institution. I guess something can't be cool or uncool if the concept of it isn't even understood and the word doesn't bear any meaning.

I definitely agree with you....most japanese people think that manga is a waste of time (that they should use for studying <---what most parents think kids should do). I was just personally speaking for my community.
