Im not really one to say what rock band is the best, but I would say my favorites in order are Rise Against, Linkin Park, and Boston.

I'll let that go because none of my favourite bands fall under directly the genre. ;)

Being classic, mainstream or unheard of doesn't make a band good... though coincidentally I dislike a lot of mainstream bands. A lot of bands I liked that cropped up around 1995 got progressively worse as they tried to create an image and appeal to a larger audience. Earlier bands don't seem to be as affected by the curse. Then again, a few come to mind that have definately sunk.
