Poll

Yes - I will take care of them when they are older, but right now I am my own person
No - I am my own person, I will take care of them out of the goodbess of my heart, but I don't feel obligated to

Hey - not to sound like a heartless a-hole, but I had a hard life growing up. Even though I say this now, I bet I will end up taking care of them later. At least my mom, my dad has a bunch of other kids from another wife, so they can take care of him.

You'll find that later in life, it is much easier to be kind than cruel. Resolve those grudges.

This isn't a matter of cruelty, it's a matter of indifference. I grew up knowing that my mom had aborted a potential sibling of mine and being constantly told that she may have aborted the wrong one. On top of that, I lived in my car from the age of 16 because no one wanted me. My dad hated me because I was not tough enough for him because he is a Marine. He used my college money to buy himself a truck and then told me I can't go to college anyways and to join the military. Then when I got outta the military I was homeless agin for 6 months because he didn't want me "hanging around his house."

My mom on the other hand is an alcoholic who moved in with me a few years ago when she found out I had rented an apartment and now she doesn't even help me with rent and I can't kick her out because she is my mom.

BTW I was physically, psychologically, and sexually abused as a child. I don't see why I owe them anything.

You seem to be mentally stable on the forum. What ever misery you endured, God shall protect you. By the way, you know there's a lot of loan, grants, and scholarships out there right? If you are as unfortunate as you described yourself to be, then your finanical aid from the college you are accepted to should be very high.

@ares- "god shall protect you"? in my case god was one of the reasons i got yelled at, and threatned! since israel is supposibly a religious country my gramma thought that i will be kicked out if i wont believe in god, after she went through the trouble of proving that i AM jewish (daddy dear is not). that fact aside how can god help you against abusive parents or guardians? it said "respect your father and your mother" but nothing is said about respecting your children. actually at some point "god" ordered one of the fatheres to sacrifice his youngest son in order to prove his loyalty!

I don't feel like I owe anyone for nothing. Things just happen they way they do. Besides they're supposed to feel priviliged to be a part of my life. Not the other way around.

In the end I don't mind finding some place for my 'parents' since they did do something for me. But it's out of my own free choice.

I guess.

I don't think my parents gave me the gift of life so that i can be indebted to them for the rest of my life. They want me to become independant, however i think i would willingly like to take care of my parents when they are older.

God is not to blame, only human stupidity and ignorance.

All you lost children, remember that hope is always there.

For giving birth to me, no. I had no choice but to accept that. But for all of the other things that they did, I am very grateful. They have been great parents, and we get along.

And with all this talk about God, maybe it's better to realize that "God helps those who helps themselves". So maybe instead of hoping that God will do something, or by thanking God for random things, we should be grateful to ourselves and the other people in our lives.

=( reminds me of senior homes... I really don't want my parents to live there. But it'd be more fun, they said. The food sucks, though!!!!

Well, the way I see it. I don't owe them anything. But I will take care of them because they took care of me. It's because I want to. Not because I had to. Wait. no. I don't know. Since I have siblings, I have options of whether I want to or not. But mostly, they're going to live at my brother's.

I don't like the concept of senior homes, unless it's assisted living in which the kids can't take care of them anymore. Or maybe I'm just conservative... it just separates them from the rest of the world where they might be needed.

oh.. today my mommy told me the Chinese senior homes in Canada are great. Although they are expensive, living there is much better than living at home, because she'll be taken care of. Food will be given to her everyday, and she could be playing majong if there are enough "legs" (in Chinese, which means enough players).

If she's happy!! I'll pay for her!

But when people get older they aren't needed.

They only become hindrances to their family.

I guess that depends on the culture. I am Chinese, so it's kinda nice to have a grandpa or grandma who can talk about the past and help out here and there. Or maybe it's because I barely ever see my relatives, so I think that it's better that they're not "put away".
