But I'm realistic, because I never have high hopes for any occasion whatsoever. Though I'm an optimistic, because when something bad happens I always try to look at it from the bright side.

Does that make me an optimistic realist. embarrassed

No, because when you're looking at it from the bright side, you aren't actually being realistic, you're being hopeful, which technically isn't grounded in reality (same thing for people who insist that things will continue to get worse). Like I said, everyone adopts separate philosophies at separate times, it's a matter of which one you adopt most frequently. You can't be both optimistic and realistic at the same time, the definitions conflict with one another. You're an "optimist who occasionally is realistic" or vice versa, not both.

edit: You can still be an optimist that's less optimistic or whatever, but that doesn't make you realistic instead. It's not like optimism is a bad thing or anything though none .

Hooray for arguing semantics!

Okay, this is sort of confusing, so I'm just going to say that I normally expect negative things, but hope for positive things.

Cheers~!

Luckily, we have Crenshi around to enlighten us. bigrazz

But when I said 'optimistic realist', I didn't really mean being a realist and an optimist at the same time, since that is conflicting! What I meant is that I'm sometimes an optimistist, and other times a realist. Guess I should have worded it differently, like...

I'm an optimist/realist, depending on the situation. cool

Or something like that.

You're right, Crenshi will enlighten us, but only if we can figure out what Crenshi said. Now I might be the only one, but it sounds to me like being a realist is almost impossible if you go by Crenshi's post, but I can't say I'm an optimist/pessimist because then I'm just everywhere. Okay, in concerns to myself, I'm a pessimist, but with others, I'm an optimist.

As far as I'm concerned, a person is only a realist when they are dealing with reality in the concrete. If a realist is looking at possibilities, it's ones based on tried and tested past experience. It's possible, but you have to not have a biased opinion in a given situation, which is difficult. Perhaps my definition is a bit inflexible, but I honestly don't understand how you can call something "realistic" if it isn't based on facts.

That's just my 0.02 though. Like I said, it's arguing semantics, there's not ever a 100% correct answer, although I still maintain that realism and optimism conflict inherently, as do realism and pessimism (though realism often adopts what seems like a negative perspective, for whatever reason people like to focus on that)...

I should probably have typed this out when I was less tired, but whatever. I probably contradicted myself on accident >_>.

How so? It doesn't assume the negative, it just lacks the positive. There's a difference.

Unless it assumes or has an inclination towards the negative, it's not pessimistic at all . This person has basically described exactly what realism is...:/...

I'm an optimistic person. I like thinking about the brighter side of life. Good things really happen if you believe in it and work hard for it. biggrin

but that much realism leads to pessimism...
