I am looking for two types of manga. The first type is those set in Japan's Heian era (794 -1185) or Taisho era (1912–1926). Examples:

Heian period:
Otogi Zoshi
Kaidohmaru (there's an anime but quite different?)
Onmyouji
Shounen Omyouji

Taisho period:
Yumekui Kenbun
Tactics
Sakura Gari (yaoi)
Taishou Kakutou Rouman: Shippuu no Ten (I haven't read it but I think it's probably set in that era)

The second type of manga I am looking for are those set in early 20th century in Asia, Europe, America, Australasia, etc (preferably not in Japan) - Edwardian, pre-WWI, whatever you like to call it as long as it's between the beginning of the 20th century to the 1920's-ish. Examples:

Gosick (novel)
Bushin Gikyoku
Mr. Morning (Australia, I think)

I am fine with anything except these:

• Yaoi and yuri - yeah, I know there is Ouchou Haru no Yoi no Romance but I generally don't want to read period manga for yaoi and yuri. Shounen-ai and shoujo-ai are OK.
• Martial arts
• Romance centered shoujo/josei
• Literary classic adaptation, such as the Tale of Genji and reincarnation of their characters (e.g. Gekka no Kimi)

Manhwa are welcome as I haven't read many.

Shoujo and josei romances are OK as long as they are not romance-centered, fluffy, cutesy, melodramatic, whatever. There should at least be something else, for example, drama, mystery, or they should somewhat reflect the lifestyles and cultures of those times.

Something like the Change! is a big no to me. It might be of interest to anyone looking for historical gender-bender comedies or old-school shoujo manga though.

That's all I can remember, sorry. Except for Haikara-san ga Tooru which is a shoujo and it's not what you're looking for.

I just found Naki Shoujo no Tame no Pavane and am hooked. It's set in the early 20th century (late Meiji near Taisho).

Taisho:
Steel Angel Kurumi - lol, It fits your conditions...
Mononoke - The last arc is set in the Taisho.

Heian:

Needle Sword and Rice Bowl Boat
Otogimoyou Ayanishiki

Early 20th c. (outside Japan):
Alto
Ikoku Meiro no Croisée
Box of Goblins
Peking Reijinshou

I know you don't want shoujo/josei romance, but there are so many of them...

But I remember from the anime that Box of Goblins is set in the 1950's and Ikoku Meiro no Croisée is set in the 19th century. 😉

There's the great seinen romance Emma, which is the most historically-accurate depiction of Victorian England I've seen in a manga. It feels like a well-done period drama.

Did you try Maruo Suehiro's works?
