So chuuni...

I saw some good reviews of this novel, though I would give it a chance...now I want my time back. Gah, what a waste. I should have stopped reading the second the protagonist was introduced with the name "Kurono Maou" (in case you don't get it, "kuro no maou" is "black demon king"). Seriously, that's his name. What kind of fucked up parents would actually name a kid that?

The novel starts with a somewhat original premise. The problem is it's only 'original' because it makes no fucking sense. Rather than being summoned to another world to be a hero or something, our protagonist is summoned to another world to be a disposable experimental test subject. And we later learn that not only is summoning someone from another world extremely rare and difficult magic (I mean, it has to be or our protagonist would just go home...), but also the country our protagonist was summoned to is full of super-bigots who don't even see other humans who don't follow their religion (let alone different races) as people *and* they're at war with a whole continent full of said non-peoples. So...uh...*why* are they bothering to summon somebody from another world? I think they have access to plenty of test subjects locally.

Hero summoning stories may be completely trite at this point but at the very least there's a certain consistency to them. If you really believe (whether it turns out to be true or not...) that the person you're summoning will be some legendary hero who will save the world then sure you're going to go through great lengths to complete the summoning. But nobody is going to go through great lengths to cast Summon Lab Rat. That's just stupid.

Yes, the real reason the novel starts what way is because the author is desperately trying to be dark and edgy. Unfortunately he has no clue how to do it, as this novel actually goes downhill from there. The pacing is a complete mess. After our protagonist's inevitable escape the story turns into some sort of bizarre slice-of-life light adventure thing. Does the protagonist seek revenge? Nope. Does he try to find a way home? Nope. Does he try to master his powers or get stronger? Nope. Does he do *anything* of interest? Nope.

Moreover the only lasting effect of all that BS 'tragedy' the author layered on so thick is the fact that our protagonist is now a total bad-ass. The experiments left him with a ton of powers and no side effects. Yes, he was literally tortured for months and forced to kill other people yet doesn't suffer from even the slightest bit of trauma. In fact he barely seems to even care.

This is all made worse by the author's infuriating writing style. He likes to spend paragraphs discussing the most mundane, irrelevant details and yet far more important things happen off-screen which barely even a mention.

Of course shit hits the fan again later on but it's so telegraphed and the author's ability to do tragedy is so lacking it hardly matters. A story just can't feel tragic when it's told this badly.

The real tragedy is how much my eyes hurt from all the rolling this novel made them do.

Good start but ends up mediocre

The novel starts off with an unoriginal prologue of a highschooler's daily life. Nothing wrong about it, it's readable and still enjoyable, but still, nothing interesting. However, it switches from that boring setting to another world quickly, becoming innovating through a story of experimentation and torture on the main character.

The first volume will be about his experience as a guinea pig in a religious lab, but what follows… The story really was promising, the protagonist seemed good, and no one could guess his personality after all the pain he went through, but certainly no one awaited the novel to fail so much.

A bad trait appearing early is the inability of the author to create good skills for the main character. Almost every he has outside of his shadow space is bullets, and the differences are barely noticeable. Also, he yells like a stupid power ranger, making the fights awkward if anything, and it's so repeated and elongated that it's boring after the first one.

After his escape, what follows is a slice of life. The protagonist, after suffering a whole year as a guinea pig, is just a dense almost goalless character, and decides to lead a peaceful life

along a loli. A yandere loli, what's more, and the next characters of his harem are already apparent as of chapter 50+.

If only that were it, but to achieve all of the starting potential, the author chooses to narrate other characters, and that's when I started literally skipping through the chapters, sometimes even when the main character was present. Not only does it become extremely boring, but it starts accumulating cliché of slices of life and even becoming unrealistic

( wow, the MC made popsicles in middle age and they were the most tasty thing anyone ever hate, so realistic, so interesting, so badass ).

All the drama the author pretends to show is lost into boring and annoying stories, and it's so bland you'd almost root for the bad guys. It would have been better if he was mad and murdered everyone, or if these religious bastards just kept him as a tool.

What can i say after bakaleaf`s great comment, beside some minor info like don`t get attached to any char`s beside the MC, because the church is brutal and is undertaking a conquest similar to spain in the americas, so lots of innocent get murdered.

Well as the title says im not an avid fan of this novel but i dont dislike it and still read it, you may wonder why? So i'll give ya guys some Pro's and Fails from this novel.

Pro's:
*its indeed a new way of transported to another world, due to the reasons behind the teleport
*It may have cruel depictions of humanity and more towards religion, but sadly the holy crusades are a written fact forever to remain in history.
*our Mc is not stupid but its not exactly smart either i would call him Naive at most but he is not a shounen stereotype so dont worry about him going 'bullshitty nakama talk no jutsu'
* The world is built pretty well so far and there is a lot yet to show.

FAILS:
*At the beggining you get to see how fast this novel turns dark from white
*At times its very hard to keep wanting to read this and i wont deny it after certain event i realy wanted to drop it.
*Im no expert but i can see the Author doesnt give a shit about what us readers and keeps his bullshitty PoV swap without us knowing.
*Spoiler*
!-'Our Mc after running from the Laboratory, he settles in a village having a Naive way of thinking that everything will be fine instead of thinking of ways to get stronger..

LASTLY:
I gotta agree with the comment on our Mc's skills it is pretty repetitive and he doesnt have any way of evolving so far other than his weapon.

I would like for people to take their time to read until ch.80 before droping this, for at least its a pretty good story to kill time.

P.D.
Harem tag is a little too much but Romance should be there.

(Chap 51) Another kaneki/hajime MC, not much development yet, still worldbuilding

The harsh things the MC goes through is similar to the MC's of Arifureta and Tale of the Forsaken Hero.

Currently new characters are being introduced but the sombre atmosphere makes this a particularly macabre web novel.

That said, the quality of translation (grammar wise and choice of diction) is very strong.

The most redeeming aspect of volume was was the slice of life. Good character development was done and we see the interactions between the MC and his potential love interest spark.

Volume 3 is where the action takes off, the slice of life ends and the pacung of the web novel becomes more deliberate

@bakaleaf I cannot refute your whole review but I can tell you that the characters who came in after Chapter 200 are people Kurono and Co will get together with. @Sircus, I also found it trash around Chapter 20, but I persevered and later on found this novel to be seriously addicting. Did you think this novel as normal japanese novels which just go Kaboom with action after some chapters? Don't think like that, this is like xianxia which takes lots of chapters to go over introducttion. AND yes, this novel loves to add slice oof life crap, but that is only to make MC normal in mental conditions. they are not for readers to crap out.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Nell will become his harem member, of course will change from good kind hearted angel to yandere, Nero might become his enemy, That necromancer bitch is gonna tutor Lily, and much more stuff. You see they are all related,

The Author puts in POV to actually tell you how some situation came to be or will come to be in future, unlike novels in which without any POV they just throw characters in and let us know the truth behind them being thrown abruptly in series a whole lot of chapters later. All the POV's are related, though in the start they might seem unrelated.
Just think of this as DRRR. Different POV's, but in the end One story.

I disagree with tameflame saying the MC is similar to the MC of arifureta and Shield hero
to be honest they are world apart.
MC in this novel is more of summon to be experimented which is clearly different being summon as hero.
There is no HERO concept in this Novel the other worldly beings are being summon to be experimented since The Church believe it is natural to sacrifice other humans in another world to inhumane experiments.
Unlike other novel this one focus on the ugly truth the human failed to see
The church proclaimed that there white GOD is the ABSOLUTE GOD and anyone who reject them is JUDGE as EVIL!
This novel is about the so called GOOD humans trying to destroyed and conquer a continent of demi race (as long as its not human) since there so called GOD want them to be a sacrifice.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The MC is quiet soft hearted I saw so many MC that walk the same path most of them has a pieces of revenge inside them but the MC in this just want to live a peaceful life.
Maybe MC encounter with the fairy was his only salvation in that new world
Imagine this
MC daily life when he was force summon was like this
Injection in the head (So MC can only follow there order)
Injection on various fluid as trial and error to strengthen the Body
Mortal (Life and death) combat with golems with very low chance of victory
Fighting 1 on 1 with other Prisoners like MC (MC is not the only one who was force summon by the church)
That is why I felt insulted when it was said it was similar to Arifureta and Tale of the Forsaken Hero!?
Seriously there experience can be consider very light compare to the MC in this novel who went through daily human life torture and experiments.

I can't help but give a comment since I think this novel is unique in every way
How the so called apostles fight for the sake of there GOD is inhumane
As long as there GOD order even an infant can be slaughter with out question
As you read this you feel how ugly human really are
In front of Absolute POWER no matter how Evil, Cruel and Injustice they act they are still consider RIGHTEOUS and GOOD.

I always love this kind of things
why must judge anyone other than human as evil?
just because they are different they have no right to live peacefully?

I wonder IF I can treasure this novel like Arifureta and Shield Hero.

So True in various religion sect
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
?Evil demons, receive God?s judgement under my holy radiance.?(Some random Priest)

He spoke some pompous and exaggerated words but he is seriously thinking of killing the evil demons in place of God.

The Elf, Lizardman, and people of other beastmen races that were continuing to resist in front of him, just what kind of difference did they have from humans? What was supposed to be their sin?

But the believers of the church believed, that any other race other than humans was nothing but a sin in front of their God.
-Chapter 60 Baka♫

But then after Chapter 200 started it became worse! Currently reading at chapter 209.
I don't know what the author was thinking was the author trying to make some changes?
but the result is beyond me.
It agonizing to read each new chapter just to realize that some random characters that came from who knows where appear. What's more this random character POV taken a whole chapter! yeah you are force to read 1 chapter of unknown characters!
If you ask me if they are needed in the story? I well honestly answer NO! They are just random filler to make the story go on circles. by the end of the day this characters well die or be forgotten and they just wasted chapters!
What happen to the MC? I have no idea I think the author is making a new MC or is it just me? the original MC went into the sidelines and well be mention in a few words! yeah a few words!
I decided to drop this one! or maybe read it later..
The process of this new characters appearing out of nowhere is something I don't like
It was good if they are part of the story or a comrade of MC
but they are not. They have there own short story. There own short adventure. and from time to time they cross path with MC. (until they die..)

If it was the enemies POV then I can ignore and read it but random characters POV is not for me.

Not very good

The initial premise is interesting, but there is not much done with it or lead anywhere.

The author is a beginner and it shows, it reads like a Song of Ice and Fire wannabe written by a 12 year old, frequent and really long intermissions with uninteresting characters talking about nothing are the writer's attempt at "political drama", entire volumes of the novel can be skipped without missing anything, a lot of text is wasted on things and characters that are gone a few chapters later and the attempts at writing a "darker" story quickly start to sound like he is trying too hard.

There is much better out there

I feel like at this point (chapter 150) I am finally prepared to write a comment. The story is very well done. Its unique and does a great job of adding depth to the characters and world. It was mentioned by others that at one point the story slows down and is a little bit of a "slice of life," but there is a reason. Its a contrast that the author uses to pull at the heartstrings. It humanizes the characters and makes them important to you so that when things change you are emotionally tied to them.

This is one of those stories that I both love and hate. I absolutely will continue to read it, but I feel like I have to prepare myself emotionally before I do. It is unmistakably both beautiful and brutal.

As for the "harem" tag I almost want to remove it, but I won't because I don't know what the future of the story holds. As of this point I would not classify this as a harem.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
There is only one character that loves the main character, and another that just finds him slightly interesting. The main character himself is not even remotely interested in or even has time to consider romantic love. It feels more like people who are unusual, and not excepted by normal society, banding together in a type of surrogate family. I would call it familial love.
