Let's put it simply: The story is far from amazing. Every chapter for the first five volumes is pretty random and half-assed. I really wouldn't recommend this to any of my friends.
However, if the reader is a fan of Hoshi no Samidare, admire the mangaka, and can excuse the series for its obvious flaws then pushing through countless boring pages will eventually bear some satisfaction. For example, I love the character development, and the mangaka proves that not all growth is positive in nature.
If all fails, enjoy the artwork.

I'll be frank, the beginning sucks. Its your dime-a-dozen, "weak kid that wants to be strong follows semi-pacifist badass duo" intro story.
But after that the story just becomes a slow roller coaster ride into crapsack territory. The weak kid joins up with the resolve to throw away his humanity only to see how twisted people who lost their humanity truly are. The badass duo are literal monsters who want to become literal human beings.
And don't think that they get what they want through the sheer awesomeness of the cast. Innocent people die. The kid doesn't get the girl. The badass duo doesn't get what they want.

I too picked this up after reading Hoshi no Samidare. And while the art style is obviously similar, the story is far different. However, this doesn't mean it is bad. It starts off rather slow, but it picks up pace very quickly. The pacing is strange but not bad. There are no "arcs". Instead, there are simply episode after episode of amazing battle scenes. The dialogue is amazing and profound. I don't even like sengoku era manga yet I was enraptured by this. Try it out, and hold on after the beginning. You won't regret it.
Starts kind of average but becomes great later on.

I started reading this after Hoshi no Samidare (which is my all-time favorite manga) and Psycho Staff. I thought the style of the author was interesting but after reading Psycho Staff I seriously thought he was a one hit wonder if you know what I mean. As I started reading Sengoku Youko I felt it was pretty average and there was nothing specially original or interesting to see. But as I continued to read the quality of the story and characters suddenly increased a lot. The characters which before seemed typical and kind of shallow were given an amazing emotional depth and the story, even though it is not the best in the world, became very entertaining.
Volumes 5 and 6 were amazing. Crazy battles and unexpected twists with powerful dialogue during some of the battles made this manga an amazing read.
Concluding, give it a shot. I don't think the style of the manga suits most people but I'm sure there are many out there that may enjoy this very much. It is still very far from Hoshi no Samidare though, really far.

I was blow away when the goddess says something like "Their journey has come to a tragic end." and then the "End of Part 1" appears in big letters I definitely didn't expect any of this.
Even though I liked the twist I'm not sure I like where the story is headed in the second part. I feel like we're gonna have a serious quality drop and we'll have to wait quite a while for it to go back up.

The description is quite deceptive. While the main characters are "wacky," the story gets pretty grim fast and the mortality rate is high. The villains so far are top grade with a mix between total bastards and those with principles.
The art is good. Decent detail but not the most original. Stories are well paced, roughly finishing each arc at one volume each, give or take occasional chapters of filler. Worth a read if you want something with a balance of bitter and sweet.

i was just warp into this..
very care free feeling with complex situation on humane consequence.
Very easily to relate to as well very enjoyable and it seem to be somewhat as a light read.(not a lot of dialogue to suffocate)

I really like it. If you didn't know, it's the same author that Hoshi wo Samidare, and even though the two are really differents, there's one point where they're similar, they're both really fun to read.
There is action, humor, serious stuff, demons and a fox-girl (well... yeah)
I recommand it to everyone who likes good battle scenes and character development (there's only ten chapters out now, but the main characters are already showing signs of improvement
