Was great, now so slow it drags

It started really good. It was cute, original and quirky. It was moving pretty well then the brakes got applied and its been moving at a snails pace for like the last 20-30 chapters. I hope it picks up soon I'm on chapter 61 or I'm going to have to drop it. I also read that they are coming out with an anime for it in 2012, hopefully that won't drag too. It was originally a 10, now its about 7.5 for me.
--->Update<----
Ok got up to chapter 75 and I'm finally dumping this manga. It started off quirky and original, but all that ever happens is drool tasting chapter after chapter. Its now a tiresome gimmick and the author obviously doesn't have anything else in his bag of tricks. 75 chapters and Urabe has gone from mysterious to cardboard cut out. I mean a little more information about her character would help develop her. At a certain point the novelty of her mystery wears off and you have to develop something there. Likewise with the drool which started as an erotic subtext, but now has just become ho-hum. Perhaps "to wait is beautiful" (in regards to relationships), but wait too long and it becomes boring. Downgraded it to a 7 now.

This is a really unique manga. From the start, you get drawn in from its originality, but you keep reading because in my opinion its a genuinely great manga! It's getting stretched quite a bit, probably because the mangaka wants to draw as much out of his succes as possible, but it remains entertaining. Following this to see how it'll all end. Recommended!!

The best

Easily the best romantic comedy manga I've read so far, and probably the best manga in general. Of course, I am a huge fan of the way the mangaka portrays this relationship so slowly. He does so very deliberately and even makes a speech about it in one volume. It's just cuter this way, and I grow weary of the "a kiss defines a relationship" idea found in half the other romantic comedies out there.
Urabe has to be one of the most interesting characters ever. I've noticed complaints about a lack of history about her, but that's probably pretty deliberate as well, since it is about Tsubaki's mysterious girlfriend, ya know.
There are definitely some oddities throughout the series, can't deny that...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Everything from his ex being willing to strip, people being far too accepting of trying drool, and possibly the Oka-Urabe bond. Or the most mysterious thing is the voice Urabe heard at first...
but it's more believable than a typical harem.
One GLARING issue was definitely Ueshiba's poor portrayal of the typical celebrity arc. But alas, I don't believe the romantic comedy is out there where the celebrity arc wasn't a drag.
All in all, the mangaka does his best to break out of the mold that the others in the style have set down, and yet still follows his own formula regularly. Cute and light-hearted, and yet rather fetish-y at points, definitely a fantastic read for rom-com lovers.

I never expected this to be my favorite manga, but since my friend recommended it to me, it is really great! I hope some of you feels the same as me. haha! The story may be slow and not making any progress at all, but for me, it gives me excitement and makes me look more forward to the next chapter! Ah. Thank you Ueshiba Riichi for making me experience this fun and i hope that you continue to make more exciting chapters and some major twist and developments! haha! smile For me, this manga is a must read! smile

i dont mind a good slow romance, but these two have been dating for several years apparently and havent really made any progress. i expected more since the girl came out really aggressively at first, but this is pretty boring stuff. its too much effort for too little payoff :/

I like This manga a lot...

I really do, I've been reading it since it's prologue chapter way back when. However something about it is really starting to bug me. I understand that first and foremost it's up to the mangaka what happens with his story, and that secondly he needs to make a buck since I'm sure they don't get paid that much for their work.

However, the mangaka has laid out several things that have yet ot be resolved, or even expanded upon. Urabe's character is severely underdeveloped, the mangaka makes it plain that there is something odd about her. I wont spoil it by typing out a list of all the things you learn in the first few volumes, but even Tsubaki notices a few of these clues and hints that she isn't exactly just a school girl. Considering how dense he is, that says a lot. Yet the mangaka refuses to develop her backstory or give any other new hints about her nor has Tsubaki endeavored to play on those hints what so ever. They foreshadowed a lot in the beginning and just left it cold even up to current chapters.

Then there is the relationship development. So far it's come to a near standstill. Urabe calls the shots and Tsubaki makes due with what little ground he has with it all. He pushes the envelope of their relationship just a bit then retracts back to where he started. Even worse is that that last dozen and a half chapters have been so predictable that they feel near unnecessary. Its the same formula.
1. Tsubaki sees his friend and Girlfriend progress their relationship somehow, or he notices a fetish or role play he'd like to try with Urabe, or he gets in trouble with Urabe.
2. Insert awkward moment and near blind misunderstandings between them.
3. Either Tsubaki gets to try out a vanilla version of what he saw his friends do, or he gets to experiment with the fetish in a mild G rating fasion, or he somehow makes right the trouble he causes.
4. Everything continues on happily ever after, and everyone acts as if it never happened. No one learns a lesson, no one gets anywhere, no character development is had. Yay...

Thats not to say it isn't readable, and the author does throw in a few twists, a one sided rival of sorts, and you even come away from each chapter feeling like it's still a potentially great romantic school love comedy. But dang it all, please have some progression! Step past one of the boundaries Urabe made, or give us a flashback of her past, or have something... /anything/ cool happen.

I recommend still read, and I think that people can enjoy it for what it is and what it offers. But I fear if something meaningful doesn't happen soon that leaves a major impact on either the readers or the characters, this manga will grow stale to the point of no return. I really want it to succeed, so hopefully the mangaka gets it together and makes this story happen. Come on Ueshiba Riichi! Don't be another Rumiko Takahashi! Dont be that mangaka!

the first 3 volumes are great.

...then the series becomes a huge success and it feels like the author is forced to drag it on and on, with rivals, pitiful ecchi, and silly attempts to make you, the reader, become part of some kind of dating simulator.
anyway, even the author must have become sick of it cause the ending is more rushed than that of neon genesis evangelion XD.

It could have been a splendid short series.
as it is, I can't recommend it to anybody.

Why you should read it and why you will like it

This is one of those titles that everyone should read at some point. Regardless of what you usually read, whether you're male or female, or whether you're young or you're old like me, you'll find Nazo no Kanojo X (Mysterious Girlfriend X) funny, thrilling, sexy, meaningful, unusual, and, oh yeah: mysterious. You can think of the "mystery", though, as nothing more than the means through which Akira and Urabe connect with each other. Nazo no Kanojo X is unusual... but it shows us a kind of relationship somewhere between "that was great sex, let's be friends, oh and what's your name?" and "We're not going to kiss until we're married" without ever referring to our judging other types of relationships. Akira and Urabe define their relationship for themselves, how they want it to be (though often a little slower than Akira would like, but he's a 17-year-old boy after all). That's the beauty of Nazo no Kanojo X... and also what makes it so mysterious.

A exellent read

Ok first I would like to say that this manga is exellent.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Now i would like to say that people seem to misunderstand the hero's perdicument. He doesn't need drool everyday it took some time before the sickness kicked in (looking at the first chapter, and for those who say but it was the next day prove it, Authors intentionally don't put time down so they aren't bound by that constraint.) So the Hero doesn't need drool everyday it just makes it easier. Now i will say that it is painfully slow but that is because the hero has no guts. The heroin is very understanding of his feeling and she is giving him hints but he is to dense and a coward to fallow them. Personally i like how the girls control the guys it is better then all this other shojo crap where the girl get played around with.

This is my all-time favorite manga, despite a monthly release and slow story. I love manga where the focus of the story is the development of the relationship, not building up towards a confession.
This manga puts a twist on that, but in a strange/weird/goofy way. Having only about 50 chapters at the moment, it won't take long to catch up on reading it, and I promise it's worth your time.
