The fundamental thing to understand about this manga should be apparent fairly early on: This MC is socially hopeless and terribly timid, and most likely has a dismal future. Then something amazing happens to him that teaches him (slowly) how to change.

Terrific art, lovely woman (if you like them skinny), and well-plotted slow growth in a surprising and unlikely relationship.

For you tiresome guys who refuse to read any story that doesn't have a Certified Alpha Male as the main character, "Methinks thou dost protest too much!"

TL;DR, the 'play' and ecchi part really not my cup of tea, but aside from that, I like the tragedy and their development, and Sahana-chan fvcking evil yet so enchanting.

So, when I ask for ""tear-jerking manga recommendation", someone recommended this and seconded by others. Thus as a fan of tragedy, I read, waiting for the part, "when will it be, when will it be" ...And that's where I did it wrong. I appreciated the building of their relationship, but turned out I didn't enjoy their 'play' and the artwork (the part where no girl ever seemed to use bra), and turned out it disturbed me so much that I read while thinking "when will this end... when will I get to the part...". At least I thought, they didn't need 8 volumes really for all those playing. So I was tired and the fact I know tragedy's waiting thus making me waited for it, costed very dearly in the reading enjoyment.

This is a very special manga for managing to expose real feelings and responses from its characters, for most part.
Things only start losing cohesion due to its length. Hideo gets to peak by the middle only to fail in its growth. It becomes disappointing to see him tormented like that, because all he manages to do is remain prisoner to a manga cliche.
Kurumi Sahana seems even less real because we never get to hear her thoughts and her behavior is always mysterious. She could very well tell the truth from the first volume but somehow she chooses not to, and Hideo chooses not to ask too much.
You see, problems arise because they are both very weak willed people, but stretching their insecurities over eight volumes is overkill.

There exists filler, while the roman club goes on missions. All this does is create more situations where the main characters get to do perversions to each other. I'm a pretty sick guy in my head but even I wouldn't get an erection if I see the person I love suffer. It's obvious bad thing happen to Kurumi Sahana, but this guy reacts to all by having an erection. It went from teenage lust to some heavy psychiatric disabilities.
Mangaka OKADA Kazuto blew the potential this manga had only to squeeze in more porn.

There is more to literature and story-telling than an intriguing, "flawless" plot. The best stories are not the best simply because they are the most interesting. They linger in our minds long after we have read them because of the depth to which they drew us into the experience. Whether it be through excitement, disgust, affection, or sorrow, the greatest works are able to latch onto our emotions and connect us to something that becomes much more than just a piece of fiction.

Japanese writers have long been infatuated with the tropes of death and character growth. Mangas that develop around these concepts are far from cutting-edge. Sundome isn't considered great because it brought new ideas to the table. It is a masterpiece because it moves and drags us into these themes to a level that very few manga have ever achieved.

How Okada Kazuto is able to connect us to his characters and his story to such a high degree can't be explained with words. It is an "act of God." Perhaps it was the way a certain panel was drawn, or the way a single thought bubble presented itself. Sundome begins as what seems to be nothing more than comedic erotica. By the final chapter, however, we have grown attached to the manga to a measure that may catch us off guard.



In conclusion, Sundome is arguably the greatest tragedy manga ever written. Some (unfortunate) individuals may not be able to fully connect with the story and experience it. But for those who do, it is something truly special.

The way the story plays out is interesting. It's not quite like what you'll find in the romance genre, not that I can speak for ecchi. At once genuine and unique, it is amazing how it manages to convey the main character's joy of being in a submissive role in a relationship while showing how the dominant and submissive parts function. I was given a new perspective of understanding. Though Sundome is a real fun trip because of that, do be wary that the underdevelopment towards the end and the plot hole nuggets will hamper your enjoyment. I would still recommend Sundome if you haven't got anything else.

Let's start with the two main characters - sort of like the very tale they play out, they're not amazing, nor unforgettable - but as their story progresses, both Hideo and Kurumi build a solid trust in their dangerously unnatural relationship with each other. It's believable, thought- provoking, and something you definitely want to read about.
I definitely agree with Kazuki27 in that this series comes off as a raunchy almost hentai manga but after reading it all the way through, all those events seem to underscore the seriousness of the whole abnormal relationship the two characters hold. Kurumi's cruel circumstances and Hideo's pure white (heh) innocence are the things that I believe are at the core of this story.
The story's downfalls, like its loose ends and underdeveloped side characters, are forgivable, I think, in light of the fact that you just won't notice them until you've finished the series. That's how much I was focused in and hoping for Hideo's wishes to come true.



I read it in one sitting/sleeping/sitting. I don't recommend it, though I guess doing so sort of fit the book's motifs. Heh.
Oh, and I have to say that by the end of the series the scanlators are hilarious and unintelligible. My first reaction was, "I think they're trying to communicate, what should I do?"

tl;dr, a more bitter than sweet romance, and a definite recommend.

Absolutely a great manga with a great "love". The biggest issue with this manga is the TERRIBLE CRAPTASTICAL job the people scanlating did with the last couple books. It was nearly impossible to read let alone enjoy. That group should be taken out and beaten with the manga they claim to love. Because that escalating job is not how even a work like yu gi oh deserves to be treated let alone a story with a plot.

Honestly, I enjoyed the manga and all but there were just way too many plot holes and too much stuff left unsaid by the end that it just felt like I had wasted a few hours for nothing.

I can't recommend this to anyone that likes stories with firm closure at the end.
