I was reluctant to read this manga because i'm a big fool and mistook her style for "Kami no Kodomo" authors' (who's works i found quite creepy ^^wink. So, when I finished reading this manga, I was gonna write smth like "this is the first work by the mangaka that i liked and liked a lot".
It's really hard to find "yaoi/shounen ai" stories to my taste. And it looks like Nakamura sensei's other works will also give me the same poignant but nice and sincere feelings.

I've read a fair share of shounen-ai and YAOI and I certainly do not like a manga just because of the lack of sex. I don't rate a manga higher just because it's sex-less. When I read this I just felt it was better than other BL I've read; when you read tons of BL stories, you soon realize that some are worth your time while others are garbage. In this case, I liked the simplicity of the story and I seriously got butterflies in my stomach when I read it. We all have different taste, I guess. I really love those schmoopy & light stories whereas others enjoy those deep and angsty ones.

This manga is full of cliques (and the author said so too), but it's written/drawn in a way that makes it interesting; it's pure and innocent which I enjoyed a lot. I too thought it was a realistic take on a innocent and happy love even though I know that RL is not always unicorns and rainbows, but that's okay. I certainly don't read BL to see boys falling in love with straight boys and then getting their heart broken.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion that's why everyone's ratings is different. If you don't understand why the ratings are high, it's because everyone's taste is different. Just for the people who are thinking 'Wtf? I don't understand what's with all these high ratings?!' smile

I actually really love this story, it has something unique to it, I don't really think it's THAT cliche. XD In my opinion, there's this development that occurs between these two. All the characters are very likeable. I love Hara sensei's unrequited love, it made me sad, but that is sort of remedied in the spin-off. Anyways, Nakamura Asumiko is a great BL mangaka/author. I enjoy all her other non-BL stories as well. smile

I can´t describe how much I´m in love with Nakamura-senseis art style. It´s so beautiful and got such an Orginal look to it.

This Manga is so innocent and Sweet and has this really heartwarming feeling to it. Although the plot can be considerd a cliché, I enjoyed the story because the characters was so likeable and innocent that it made me want to read more and more. I would describe this manga as a refreshing summer morning. I´m really looking forward for the Sequel of this Manga, because it definitly has more potential to grow, both as a Shounenai and Yaoi.

I think the reason most people find this manga good because it´s very Simple and has a very nice flow to it.

So, yeah not a bad read, but I really don't understand the high scores. There really isn't that much depth to it. Most of the "depth" is just other cliches that have been done before. The Kusakabe is interesting although not very fleshed out, but Sajou is just dull and boring. The art wasn't bad, but it just looked a bit odd in places. If someone can tell me what they think is so good about this, please pm me and let me know why you think so, because I just don't get it.

It's a nice light read. One criticism I might have is that the plot seems to be holding back, it has the potential to go somewhere yet it never does. Even the issue revolving universities and their futures never really go anywhere, we don't even find out Kusakabe wants to do in the future. They touch upon it very briefly, but they don't really explore the societal implications of being gay in a Japanese society.

...I don't find this manga very impressive at all. Most of the comments before mine have obviously been written by people who have read too much yaoi; in which case their positive reaction to this virtually sexless story is quite understandable.
Thankfully, I am not such a person. Having never read or liked yaoi myself, I feel I can make a much more unbiased assessment of Doukyuusei.

Cliches abound - we have a gay teacher (read: pseudo-rival), an all-boys school (oh why, oh why can't they be in a co-ed school for once confused ) and a dash of "Oh, but he's straight so it's obvious that he's just playing around with me until he gets a girlfriend" and "If I go away for college, will our relationship end?" angst to keep things interesting.

I find it difficult to understand how people can think of this as being 'deep' or 'realistic'. There is no such thing as a realistic BL with instantly reciprocated love and an obvious happy ending!
If you enjoy realism, then read The Love Letter, Pokerface and maybe even Boku wa Sakana - all of which are lovely little one-shots that show what really happens to boys who fall in love with their friends.
On the other hand, if you like unrealistic happily-ever-after school-life BL with likable characters, try Honeydew Syndrome or Komatta.

Despite all my criticism, Doukyuusei is by no means a terrible read. It is definitely good enough for a bit of mindless entertainment when you are suddenly struck by the desire to immerse yourself in the vapidly romantic world of shounen-ai. And of course, I'd never miss out on a chance to praise the art; it is lovely, unique and stylized, with not a hint of androgyny in any of the males.

I really hope that Nakamura Asumiko will have the sense to free herself from the constraints of the yaoi / shounen-ai genre and successfully develop the literary potential that make her non-BL oneshots so brilliant. If I'm not mistaken, Utsubora seems to be a step in the right direction.

This manga was so light and realistic, it just hooked me at the first page! I can't remember me having read a shounen-ai/school-life manga, that was as realistic as this one. I don't like the way it is in most shounen-ai/school-life manga's: there's this guy, he falls in love with a popular guy and suddenly there are rivals everywhere and everyone is gay (it's actually kind of depressing for girls to read stuff like that, especially if you're a yaoi noob). In this manga, it's not like that!

Anyway, about the way it's drawn. It's definitly unique, but it also really fits the story line. It's sort of flowy and wind-like. It's good.
Yeah, the characters are well thought-out and real. You get this feeling you're really getting to meet them and you can get into their perspective.
You can tell I'm in love with this manga and that's correct.
Definitly recommended~!!!

This was the first work that i've read of Nakamura-sensei, and it's my favorite BL. The time I read the first chapter, i knew from the cover it wouldn't be my style of art. However I was still drawn into it at first glance. Doukyuusei is a work which made me feel like "first love" isn't so cliche as it is in many other manga. It's pure, sweet, and yet very realistic at the same time. One of the thing that drawn me into this is the developments which the characters shows, it's very cute, and adorable. Their feelings are also very re-latable. The art to add, it's just.... simply beautiful. What more, the kissing scenes makes me heat up smile .

 Innocent and bittersweet love

This is completely to my taste. It has a wonderful sense of humor with beautiful art and the love is so innocent and bittersweet. All the characters feel so life-like and lovable.

The way Nakamura Asumiko descirbes it herself is the perfect way:
"I wanted to really go back to basics and write a story that is so pure and innocent and as slow and vexing as it can be."
