This is one of the best ones in my personal opinion. I've read heaps of series but most seem to lack depth. I enjoyed this series more than most mainstream stuff because at the very least, it managed to make me believe in their love for each other. Admittedly there are times when they are selfish, rash, or make you want to shake them, but at the same time, if they didn’t act like that out of desperation for Takuma’s life, it wouldn’t make sense in context with their situation. I can’t say I absolutely love either of them, but I certainly don’t dislike them either. They are flawed and human, and perhaps it drives readers up the wall once in a while but I believe it’s mostly due to their circumstances. I’m just satisfied that they’re not the shallow, brainless types I usually see because in this particular manga, I care more about the overall storytelling than the characters themselves. I just really love the way the mangaka leads us through the story with Takuma’s monologues and the smart use of paneling. The tone is very down-to-earth and full of heartfelt feelings without coming across as cheesy. I’ve dropped series upon series that tried to be emotional but just made me cringe from the cheesiness. Obviously this is a sad story, so there are parts that may be heart wrenching, but also parts that are bittersweet or comical. The key is that it is well balanced. The balance is something most artists fail to grasp, but I think Aoki-sensei did an excellent job until the end. On another note, I am personally not a medical student so I don’t know how realistic the technicalities are, but I’m just reviewing about the story of Takuma and Mayu trying to fight fate. I think it was refreshing and well-developed. Honestly, you don’t have to read much (just one chapter will be enough) to see if you like it or not because they are each pretty representative of the series as a whole. I say definitely try it out if you’re not too prone to tears.

Probably THE best manga I've ever read, Boku Kimi has a plot much deeper than your usual shojo I-love-you, you-love-me, kind of thing. 12 volumes may seem long, but once you get into it you'll wish for it to never end. Takuma and Mayu~ <3 amazing couple

Okay, I'm not crying nor are my tear glands are connected to the ocean,but... I loved it!!!! I've always loved a good tragedy, but I didn't quite want anything tragic to happen. That's how much the author involved me in the story. The ending was unclear so that gave me the freedom to create my own.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Kou is no longer brain dead, and married his girlfriend. Takuma and Mayu are married. Kou's brother and Mayu's friend are also together. Now the story continues with a love triangle surrounding the children.

Greatest Manga That I Have Ever Read

Updating my comment since I finally caught up with it. At first, I thought it was going to go off-track and take a comedy route to the story (which would truthfully be just awful)... but it still kept up to pace with its storyline. This is a must read for anyone that doesn't mind shedding a tear or two (in my case, however, I don't think I can count how many times I cried... and now just thinking about this series makes my chest hurt, but I'm in love with this manga). This is just such a beautiful, sometimes heart-breaking, manga.

I can't wait for the next release. It's driving me nuts!

For some reason I always feel that every manga I read is my favorite manga, but Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu has officially taken the spot. This has actually become my favorite manga, and surprisingly this series is the first of it's genre (Shoujo/Romance). I've always been a fan of Shounen/Seinen, but this manga has really shaped my views... for the better.

I seriously suggest you read this. The entire manga is so great that I can't put it in words. I feel that anything I can say about it would be an understatment. You'll hate the characters you thought you once loved, but only to fall in love with them once again. You feel their pains and sorrows, but you also feel their love. This is a feat that not many novels could even pull off.

Anyways, this is a MUST READ... even if you thought Seinen/Shounen (i.e. masculine manga) are the only things that appeal to you. That used to be me, but this series has changed my entire opinion on the Shoujo/Romance, for the better.

No matter who you are, read this manga! I promise that you won't regret it.

Also, Starry Heaven is doing an amazing job with this manga. Their quality is more than superb. The schedule, however, is on the slow side. But you have to understand that they have their own lives to live, and this project is one of about twenty others. Then again... who am I to complain? I haven't helped with the scanlation/editing process. Although I'm hoping to help out in the future in some shape or form (probably when I'm able to set up a paypal account), I have no right to talk when all I've done is express my gratitude.

Anyways, you NEED to read this manga. In truth, I would call it perfection. But that's just me...

No regrets

To be honest at first I was avoiding this manga like the plague because I thought "ah crap It's just gonna be so sad and heavy and i don't know if my heart can handle all that today" but little did I know that it would give me the opposite feeling. This manga was filled with so much Love and hope and the idea that it's all so fragile made it even more beautiful.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I thought Takuma trying to avoid Mayu was very realistic, i mean if it were me I'd probably do the same because truth is, what kind of person would make someone fall in love so hard knowing that in the end they'll only leave the person. But I loved that he chose to love anyway.

I love the characters-- Mayu is such a strong female yet so vulnerable. I love how she never stops believing, how she doesn't deny her feelings but looks at everything straight on, wholeheartedly and openly. I love Takuma's determination to stay alive because of love but most of all I love how much they love each other. This whole manga can be cruel at times especially since you, the reader, want so much for them to be happy and when you see them pray so hard it really hits the heart.
Don't get me wrong, this manga is NOT gloomy or dark or completely just downright emo, it's about hope, growth, strength, acceptance, choices, friendships but most of all it's about Love. A very deep Love that gives you a fluffy yet prickly feeling. It has a great balance of funny scenes, happy scenes and sad scenes.
Don't assume the ending either because well.. it's all about perspective. What YOU choose to believe.

Highly Recommended. Loved every bit of it.

To be honest, I've got a teary eye while reading several mangas. But there are only 3 that had seriously made me cry from the bottom of my heart: Full Moon wo Sagashite, Fruits Basket and Boku Kimi. Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu felt realistic throughout the whole series. The romance was extremely beautiful between Mayu and Takuma.

SPOILERS: I had kept swallowing my tears throughout the whole series, until Kou collapsed and "died". That broke me into pieces. I couldn't stop crying. Then it was Takuma's letter to Mayu before the surgery that had me crying so much. I was so sure that he was going to die. But then the last page turned the tears of agony into the ones of happiness and relief.

The best thing about the manga was the balance. It was tragic, it tore my heart into pieces. But it also made me laugh so hard. Funny and happy moments they all balanced it so well. Oh god, this is my new favourite manga!

I cried throughout the whole thing, I have read so many other tragic manga but this one is the sadist one of them all. In the end my eyes were all puffy and I was all red :')
The romance in it is so bitter-sweet, the art is unique and detailed and the plot is AWESOME
I highly recommend this :')

Suspension of Disbelief

It's shoujo manga. It's melodramatic. It's full of does-this-happen-in-real-life situations, and teenage angst. And I just love it for what it is.
Takuma's feelings are really full-on, and it doesn't drag on hopelessly forever. Although it's in the longer manga category, I enjoyed every bit of it and think it's length is pretty justified.
I really like this type of art, too, which is always nice.

On the note for the whole medical accuracy...well. I didn't really expect that to begin with, really...(i mean, would you, for a general shoujo?). But I agree with the point made by Iyransi about the bias against brain death. It's important to remember not everything you read is necessarily true or correct, and your beliefs should be reviewed by something a little more substantial than a fictional read.
