A forgetful ending

The series was fairly interesting for its genre (horror), which I usually find unappealing. The ending in chapter 143 ruins the series enough that I'd recommend just stopping at 142. There just was not enough foreshadowing of the ending, and the way it ended simply had no meaning.

I guess I should not be too surprised given the highly detailed but incomplete world of ghouls and humans constructed by the mangaka. In short, he did not construct a world, rather he was just focused on Tokyo. This is usually understandable for manga, given that it is japanese after all, but the mangaka repeatedly focused on the theme that "the world is wrong," which simply reminded you that you don't know anything about how ghouls are treated in the rest of the world.

If the world had been constructed in a more complete fashion, there would be countries which treat ghouls like normal citizens, and others that treat them as slave labor. There would be countries where ghouls would be in charge and humans would be the 2nd class citizens. The point is that there would be so much variation that the real struggle for ghouls would be immigration and some dream of a "promised land."

So, sorry Ishida Sui. Your world was not wrong, rather it was simply incomplete, much like the ending to your series.

Good but falls off

I love the concept and the fact that the main character is on the 'wrong side' and all the psychological exploration that comes of that. The art is solid, the author is not afraid to widen his cast, so the society feels real, which I like.

The problems:
-Too narrowly focused on particular sub-plots and loses it's synthesis as a story on the whole. He has great ideas, but executes them one at a time: first it's the his adaption and how that effects relationships with his old/new friends, then it's the new people he meets around him when learning his new lifestyle, then it's the government encroachment, then it's back to another plot on ghoul society, then back to another government plot, etc, and the mangaka sort of forgets the other stories while he's doing another, so you'll have a whole volume of one plot, then a whole volume of another, so it's really strange when suddenly he sees this 'best friend' of his again after 3 volumes and then doesn't see him anymore after that...
-Shounen style hero: As I mentioned at the beginning, there are great characters, the problem is, they sort of flip on themselves, so the enemy becomes the good little sidekick, all his psychological problems blown away by being beaten up by the main character (this happens a lot). The main character also had a lot of interesting concerns and personality traits that just get thrown away for him to be badass... which is momentarily exciting, but it destroys the development and long term coherence...
-Shounen style bad guys- I guess this goes hand in hand with the previous two problems, but the really important bad guy in one plot is removed, introduce new really bad guy, remove, etc and the whole story revolves around the bad guys, which sort of makes it boring after a couple arcs...

So, great manga, definitely worth reading, just no reread value and probably will go onto your unfinished list, so don't read it if you want to finish the series ^_^; (note that I am the kind of guy who got bored of naruto and bleach and noblesse etc etc so if you can continue reading those series for evermore, then this is perfect for you too)

All around great manga, the only thing that's disappointing is its slip into shounen tropes. The tired and sexist tool of having a strong woman only for the protagonist to SUPER POWER UP and brush her aside / save her is pretty lame. The method that the protagonist powered up is fairly original and more realistic than most, but in a general with such established tropes its best to avoid them. Especially if its going to turn sexist
Otherwise good character building

In terms of the pros, firstly I must say I ADORE the art. It's some of the best drawings I've seen in a while. Sui is great at character design, Kaneki's awesome ghoul mask has become rather iconic in the series. Secondly, the author is decent at foreshadowing and he loves to mentally break characters. So if you're into dark twisted shit, this may be worth a read. Characters aren't all fluffy either, since you follow Kaneki into the world of ghouls, which are basically "bad" guys with some redeeming features. The people he is surrounded by are macabre to say the least. But that's one of the interesting points.

In terms of cons... I was somewhat disappointed that it had the typical "weak meek loser type" turn into "super strong badass who suddenly destroys all previous opponents" shonen cliche. I wanted his development to be more realistic and gradual, not a sudden power spike that changed A LOT about him. It felt... too convenient. Too contrived. The beginning of the manga showed that this could be a new and original manga that defies convention, but I was slowly seeing it slip into the same shonen tropes. The heroine who was originally supposed to be "strong" is quickly brushed aside and turns into a damsel before his new found super hax powers. It really bothered me, don't make her seem strong in the beginning just so you can kick her down a notch to show how strong the protagonist becomes. It's the same tired and not to mention sexist trope that I get annoyed of seeing.

Aside from following the shonen formula and such, I would say overall this manga is pretty original and has a good atmosphere for horror lovers. It seems the author really enjoys tormenting his characters to the absolute brink, so I don't really expect him to be gentle with them in the future chapters either, lol. Here's hoping he breaks out of the shonen cliche a bit and gives us a truly original manga that this had the potential to be since the beginning.

Just awsome, manga like those can be really rare; so far only a few made me so happy to read, and so into it, like Titan, Apocalypse no toridé, and tokyo ghoul now. kinda the same genre, and so good. you quikly get attched to the character, and they're not boring at all.

Love this manga so happy to have ind it :'( it's been a while since the last time i read something so interesting.
I hope the charactere won't get killed even if it's tragedy.

Ps: if someone have the same kind of thing without boring romance, and stupid girls making most manga stupid. please tell me. i's also so rare.

Sarts off Good, Starting to become Stereotypical

I will keep this short and simple:
+Interesting premise
+Realistic reactions/emotions
+pretty damn well paced
+cool and unique characters

-not very strong climb to climax, meaning, the story started off awesome, but is starting to go downhill
-characters in later story are not very sympathetic
-instead of an emotional roller coaster, it becomes a fighting manga around 4-5ish volume :\
-I read all the way up to the 100th chapter so far and frankly, I know how it is going to end, unless there is a plot twist which I can still kind of guess where it is going

I gave it a 10/10 so that the Bayesian Average will rise and make it up higher in the rankings, in actuality, it's around a 8.5/10. No manga is perfect; I just want more people to find out about this manga, because it is worth reading.

Although the plot is pretty good but something about this manga threw me off. I decided to put this manga on hold. It made me bored... only a few chapters kept me going and "hype".
