I'm not a huge fan of emotional entanglements so this isn't really my cup of tea, but even then this story drew me in. I can really see the author's efforts in developing their relationship in consideration to their individual characters, unlike other yaoi manga where the plots are easily interchangeable. The characters aren't necessarily likable but very well brought out and believable. (Personally, I really liked Imagase- so hopelessly in love yet almost scared by his strong feelings.) The ending was perfect not in that there was a happily ever after, but it gave the reader a sense of hope. Anyway explaining this is really difficult so you'll just have to read it for yourself 8)

I found every character in this series unbelievably weak, and for the most part the story just kept going around in circles. The saddest thing is that that's really all I can say about this story. It didn't really grip me and I couldn't bring myself to empathize with the characters. Maybe if I read it again later I'll change my mind, but as of now I'll give it a 7.

I really love happy endings. Actually, I love sad stories more, but I really do enjoy clean wrap-ups in the end. Happy endings are always enjoyable for me unless they're just, like, really, really stupid. This ending is not satisfying if you're looking for a big boom and rainbows and joy. But it may be one of the best endings I've read. I don't know if you'll think that I'm over-exaggerating in this review, but I just love this series so much that I can't stop myself. Plus the art was great, especially the expressions throughout the different scenes.

So anyway, The Carp on the Chopping Block Jumps Twice and The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese...I really have to applaud PresenceDear for going through so much to translate this series. There's so much in each page and they even go into the titles. I mean they also go as far as to look up the songs to see how they relate to the storyline [and by the way, I've been hooked to Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro ever since the last chapter]. The dedication! I love it. And the translations are all so precise as well! One of the best jobs with delivering the emotion and meaning.

This series really made me cry. It's the only yaoi series that made me tear up and cry a lot in each chapter in front of my computer. It might sound pathetic, but there was something about the dialog and the fluctuating emotions of Kyouichi and Imagase that just hits me hard and makes me cry over them. They're flawed. Who isn't? But it's because that they're flawed they're good characters to love, good characters to pity and sympathize. These two men go through so much in their short lives, especially Imagase and his one-sided love and Kyouichi with his inability to understand whether or not he loves Imagase. Perhaps that one factor just baffled me throughout the story. He'd claim "I love him" but then the next it was "but I want to end this" or "you said we can't be together, so we won't." Perhaps it's because of his other relationships that he became to think that way. But these vulnerable characters who really have never felt true love until they saw each other just make me...they just make me so sad. The development and the crashes throughout the story make me wish that they could just simply love each other.

But they don't think that way, and neither does Setona Mizushiro. And it just makes it so much more rich. I know that there are people saying "These people are like real gay people". To tell the truth, the label "gay people" is much too specific. These people are like real people, in general, period. Because everyone will doubt and everyone will feel selfish and unloved and everyone will regret but push on.

Tamaki seemed like a nuisance in the beginning, but it seemed that she seemed to develop the love that Kyouichi had for his "ex-girlfriend" by the end of the series. Perhaps if she had not been there, the two would have broken in a more devastating way.

But I think I'll just write the rest of my review about chapter 3. Oh, chapter 3...words cannot describe the absolute sorrow I felt when reading the chapter. Imagase made me cry. It's really funny how he can manage to hold a conversation with Kyouichi and then afterward ask him to have sex with him [and then Kyouichi goes with it] but then throw a fit and cry more. I cry with him when he's like that. Chapter 3, in my opinion, was the best chapter in the series. Sure, the ending was lovely with the snow and all, but chapter 3 was just tear jerking and heart wrenching and everything good and bad.

So if you've made it this far in my review and you find lovely stories of the utmost sorrow but at the same time happiness to be great, you should just go back to The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese, reread it [or read it for the first time], come back and then pick this up. I'm not gonna lie though. If you can't see through the fights and words that they see and simply think "Wow ___ is a jerk and should ____" or "They're fighting over something stupid/He's so ____", I wouldn't bother reading this series. I hope to see more of Setona Mizushiro's amazing works.

I feel slightly disappointed at the end. The first story was very realistic but the carp series... I don't know, somehow the image of Imagase created in The cornered Mouse was different from the one in Carp. I think sensei concentrated her efforts in the second story much more on Kyouichi. The emotional rollercoaster in the last chapter was too exaggerated for me. But as usual I liked the way sensei captures the emotional tension between them. The way Imagase stares stunned at Kyouichi, and then in the next picture tries to hide his true emotions looking aside. The moments of intimate atmosphere between those two. And the final conversation- that was really good!
Very well done though the mouse-story was way better for me : )

a wonderful, heart-wrenching love story. chapter 4 was so well put together by sensei and the people at presencedear for the translations. the conversations at the end were amazing- slightly sad, funny, serious, loving- I felt it was almost like watching two people in front of me interact. Mizushiro sensei did an incredible job with this manga. loved this manga. this is my fav yaoi manga.

This goes down in my book as "favorite yaoi story of all time." The language and dialogue in this manga are thoughtful... and almost poetic; especially Kyouichi's soliloquies. And what I love most about this manga are the emotions this story invokes. I was moved to tears more than once.

This is the sort of manga that makes me feel like love transcends beyond genders. Does it matter what sex you are, as long as you truly and genuinely feel something for the other person? In Imagase, we see a crush for Kyouichi that seems to follow him throughout the years of his life after college. This crush blossoms into a deep feeling of love in the prequel, which led to the scenes in this manga, the sequel. In Kyouichi, he matures as a character, and by the third chapter, we see that he has truly and honestly changed. Where there was only a sexual desire to be loved previously, there now appears to be a real feeling for Imagase.

Of course, like most other readers, I hope to see a happy ending for the two, but who knows? Anything might happen to our two heroes now.

*EDIT// The ending is more fitting than I would have thought possible for this story.

I don't see this manga as riddled with angst and drama... I really see a very realistic couple. One that is madly in love... so in love that they are so insecure... that would be Imagase... And the "angst"/"melodramatic" scenes are the ones with Imagase vainly trying to hold onto his love... a love that is so one sided it's unbelievable. There are relationships out there (in fact, many) that are so unbalanced... one loves the other so much more... I think Mizushiro did a good job of representing this in a very realistic manner... But maybe I just view that because I was once in a "relationship" with a playboy... I was constantly fighting... stupidly hoping.. that I would be the one to change him.

I think Imagase is something along those lines... somebody just grasping and grasping... vainly holding onto something that isn't really there...

I have a feeling that the manga is going to end with a happy ending... which makes the series less realistic... what would be realistic is Imagase to finally rid himself of Kyouichi...

Now. Let's analyze Kyouichi... I wouldn't say he's airheaded... or flighty... I think he is a character that's has always had it easy. There was always somebody that loved him... he went from one relationship to the next... and he felt that people should love... give... unconditionally to him... and that he didn't have to give anything back. I think this flaw is due to the fact that things come too easy to him. And there are people out there that are like that. I think the issue of becoming "gay" is really a major undertone (not sure if that's the right word to use) for his actions... he cannot wrestle with the fact of admitting that he truly love a man... and what if the gay relationship ends badly? Then he went to the dark side for no reason... I would have the same thoughts as him... if I were him. It's a very understandable conflict.

So what I am trying to say is that I find the two characters to be very rich. What is amazing is that the story is not riddled with major plot driving events... the plot doesn't drive the characters actions.. if that makes any sense. Instead... it really is a story full of the character's thoughts and interactions with each other... which just makes the character development even stronger... ugh... I cannot explain what I am getting at.

Just read the story. It will make your heart wrench. Knot up. And you will be so sad for Imagase at the end of chapter 3.

As expected of sensei. She really knows how to whip out a good story and make it work.

Kyouichi is highly culpable as their relationship goes. He makes you want to scream and slap him mercilessly across the face at certain times.

Imagase on the other hand is someone maybe a few people can sympathize with. His pure yet twisted feelings for Kyouichi are heart-breakingly beautiful, yet sad to watch.

All-in-all, a very good manga, though I love the prequel just as much. smile

And for Setona Mizushiro, I find the sex to be VERY hot.

Expressions and angles are EVERYTHING.
