I'd have to say Gutsu from Berserk. He is all manner of badass going toe to toe with demons that rip regular humans apart wielding a hellishly huge sword Freud would froth rabidly at, while being fully and wholly human.
He's had such a fucked up life, ie surprise buttsecks, abusive adoptive father, etc, yet when interacting with others, he's a surprising sort of role model that's all about self-empowerment.
Your parents eaten alive right in front of you by insectdemons posing as faeries? Get revenge by burning them all alive and relish in their death squeals.
Gutsu will save their ass if it really needs saving. But if someone thinks they can handle something, Gutsu trusts them to do it.
C'mon!! Badass, and a role model. Can't be cooler than that.

Broli was only in the DBZ anime, though, so he doesn't count. It's just manga characters.
