So, how do you guys feel about authors branching out to work on what they don't "specialize" in? Can you think of any real life examples? They turn out to be disasters or miracles?

I don't mind mangakas branching out to other genres/demographics. It can be good and interesting to see them crossing over to other things outside their main genre/demographics.

Manga I'm loving ATM: Heart no Kuni no Alice

I don't mind mangakas branching out to other genres and demographics as long as they don't lose their touch with their audiences.

I could think of a few who had at least fit into this:

KUMETA Kouji-Originally started off with a sports manga before expanding his work into comedy and satire. The only genre he flopped was action.

WATASE Yuu-Until recently, most of her work are shoujos. Arata Kangatari is her first shounen manga for Shonen Sunday.

Those are the only ones I could think of, and I'll probably post a few more when I have time.

lol this reminds me of PEACH-PIT. Now that i think about it.. they've almost done every genre aside from the adult ones lol.

I do not think change the genre is really a big deal because most of the popular mangaka have their unique style and it remains the same in whatever genre they do. For example, in the home page, they mentions ADACHI Mitsuru as the mangaka specialize sport genre but actually he made some non-sport shounen and I don't see much difference from his other work cuz his style is so obvious.

Besides, I didn't see any mangaka can really change their style or they don't want to change their way of success, despite the case that the it's the work of a group of mangaka such as CLAMP.

Shinjo Mayu is not the best example. With her doing shounen and all.

& she's also got a yaoi going on, Sakura Gari.

We all can voice our opinions but the truth is if it makes money then yes.

I'm ok with them branching out XD it doesn't always mean I will try it, though . Like if a shoujo mangaka (no smut of anything) writes a hentai, I will not read it. It's good that they branch out, though XD

two words: SHINJO MAYU.

The first and only time I enjoyed a manga from here was her shounen oneshot Apple!.

Same goes for WATASE Yuu with [m]Sakura-Gari[/m].

When I find out a mangaka I like does other genres, it makes me happy that they have a variety of style ^_^
