preferably with a strong female character ie not one who cries and is all 'confused' about her feelings all the time

The one-shot had them as rivals, the main series is not really like that anymore. Still a good read.

yeah it's pretty good, i would say, even though it's shonen i reckon there's a large number of females reading it too, shonen might be aimed at guys but i'm pretty sure tonnes of girls read em too

Bloody Cross seems it's been picked up by a new group (sometime ago apparently but I only just noticed) IMO it's got a really good story and has the rival turn lover your looking for (or will sometime soon)

Half angels: Individuals cursed because of their impure lineage. Tsukimiya is a Vampire Half Angel, and with her companion-of-convenience Hinata, with whom she shares a strained relationship at best, and an antagonistic one at worst, are on a search for the "God's Book of Prophecy". The book harbors immense power, and is supposedly the only thing capable of removing the half-blood curse that Tsukimiya and Hinata share.

The problem is that nobody knows if the book's power is enough to save two people, and neither is willing to share with the other.
