One of 'the' shoujo series

Much better than the anime. The characters develop more, and they spend more time developing the plot than fighting endless hordes of monsters. And while the characters (especially the main character) can get annoying, it's still a lot of fun to read. I wish there was a high-quality copy available to read... still recommended for all shoujo fans.

I was just a little girl when I got my first copy of sailormoon back when tokyopop was making the series in english and they were the little books (Promoted to be able to be more portable)
As another stated the manga was in fact quite different from the anime in the 90's. Usagi (Serena) Was a crybaby for such a long period of the anime, but in the manga she didn't say that way for long. However it felt this way due to the fact that the anime was LONG. whereas the manga wasn't. (As much as I loved the anime back then, it didn't hold up as it is SO SO SO much fluff. ) ((I don't much care for the first 2 seasons of the new anime as they can't seem to get the style to be consistent ))
I loved the managa, the whispy art style, and though it is a bit repeitive it still reached the end before it took to long to do so. Sad the artist isn't doing more manga.

hot take: this was a slog to read through

In one word: its repetitive.

I was a huge fan when I was eleven, but I never got to read the whole thing. I was finally able to read it the whole way though back in high school. I could ramble on and on about it but I'll try to give you a list of complaints instead.

Usagi as a protagonist is just too plain. She doesn't have a personality other than "klutzy shoujo mc", quickly dropping the "klutzy" part. I've seen people complain about her in the anime, they are delusional.

Usagi is honestly a mary sue, everything is about her and how pretty she is and the girls are just her cheerleaders.

You can just tell it wasn't meant to be read in one sitting. It feels like the blueprint or summary for a story. Which it technically *was*, due to the way the anime was produced so I digress.

We literally get the same story told to us five times in a row. That's it that's the manga.

Honestly it's not offensively bad, far from it, its just mid. So mediocre it hurts, if you will. The thing is that people will say Sailor Moon is the second coming of christ and I get kinda angry that I can't enjoy it the way they do. Maybe I should finish the anime instead, maybe that one's good? Can't say really. So... yeah, maybe read it for research purposes? if you liked the anime? the art is certainly very pretty. Maybe show it to a 7 year old? They'll like it.

What can I say...

Back in the day Sailor Moon was one of the first manga I was able to get my hands on in my country, and even then I could only get some of it in my native language, I had to buy the rest in Japanese. Back then I really did enjoy it, and in a world where manga was a rare and shameful taboo, you can bet it made an impact on me as it helped me to find other manga much worst, and much better.

With that said, while I have owned the manga for years, I never really had an urge to reread it, and it didn't have any moments in it that made me want to look back at it like some other manga do. While i do tell people about sailor moon, I have never recommend someone to read it.

I give it a 7 for nostalgia reasons, but truthfully I found it to be ok, the events happen like a laundry list and less like a flowing story, so I find it hard to reread. But it holds a special place in my heart like a terrible first love.

First Anime.

Didn't read the manga until late primary school (around 6th grade), but I do remember running home after reception class to watch this anime on TV (all 200 episodes on VHS later on because the UK didn't have all the seasonsTT_TT). Oh looking back on it now you can criticize the voice acting or how the anime is not as good as the manga, well excuse me, I like to preserve those amazing memories of dressing in my SailorMoon Hallows costume, with my stuffed Luna doll and my collection of the Sailor Moon Barbies (ahem, ahem full collection). I was a pretty top first year:]

Anywho, back to the manga. Like I said I didn't read it until late primary school which left my mind quite foggy on how well the two coincided, but as far as I can tell they follow each other well. Both are beautifully romantic, action-packed, suspenseful, tragic?, and brilliantly executed. Loved it always have and always will.

Where's your childhood? Haven't read or watched yet? Go watch it now!
