this was a slightly frustrating read since it was so long...and the first 20 volumes were odd..i didn't like it at all...it gets better tho even tho the
it gets slightly better later on, i wanted to see what happened and couldn't put it down...but it definitely is not one of my favourite mangas..was a bit painful to read.

amnesia twist was very very cliche. sweet that he finally got rid of that umi on his own but otherwise unnecessary maybe?

What can i say about Hana Yori Dango? This manga it's so good that all the good things I want to say about it have been told here already. This story it's just for people meant to love and live romance.... Such a great Plot i love it
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The ups and downs Doumyouji and makino went through melted my heart. I love how Doumyouji always shows how much he cares for her and the crazy things he's willing to do just for seeing her happy, I love the end... If Makino didn't remain with him i know many readers would've upset...
love it love itGreat piece of work!

Second best shoujo

This manga is great. Granted the art isn't the best at first but it gets way better as the manga goes on. The story itself is only beaten by one shoujo manga (nodame). I say this as a faithful seinen fan (i'm a dude and i'm genneraly not reading shoujo mangas).
Still i can't help feeling touched by this manga. The main story is good but the small stories about the secondary characters is even better. What touched me the most was the story about Sara, yuuki and Soujirou. It was simpel, sweet and very realistic. Speaking in general terms the charakter develoment is superb.
Read it. It is the only shoujo manga i have ever given this high a rating (i won't give nodame a rating until it is finished, but so far its one of the only 10/10 i could ever imagine giving).
9,8/10

Truthfully i hesitated to read this manga because:
1.) The art in the beginning was just horrible
2.) The fact that it's around 37v's
3.) i already watched the drama so i thought it would be like a repeat -.-
HOWEVER:
I found that
1.) The art gets A LOT better each volume (and i mean AMAZING ART)
2.) 37 volumes felt like 15v's to me for i finished it in 2 days!
3.) It was a lot different from the drama: Different scenario's times and places.
So all in all.. I highly Recommend this manga and now i know why people like this manga so much and why it has such high ratings cuz its so friken good! i couldn't stop reading! Don't miss out on this incredible manga! The art get's a lot better trust me. It has the best twists, plots, development and the characters are really interesting. && Again, if your picky with art (like i am) the art gets a lot better and i mean A LOT; if you've read her other manga Cat street it's the same art as hana yori dango.

Well I tried out this series a long while ago and I couldn't even finish the first chapter. Maybe it wasn't didn't interest me enough or perhaps it was the art was a little off or maybe because it was called 'Boys over Flowers' (no offense or anything but a title like that puts me off ). Anyways I got bored two days ago and needed something to read so I decided to pick this up again.
I liked it.....no that's really an understatement. I just finished all 36 volumes just a few hours ago and just enjoyed the entire series. This is probably one of the few shoujos that I can honestly say is really interesting and not that predictable.
I like Makino since funny, strong and atypical personality compared to most shoujo heroines (although her constant wavering between Rui and Domyouji got kind of tiresome after a while) but I got to say that Domyouji was definitely my favorite character. He's such a hot-headed idiot and he did make Makino's life at school nearly unbearable with his stupid F4 crap but he has changed for the best and truly does love her. I do feel sympathetic towards Rui since it seemed like by the end of the series he had been dumped twice.
I definitely liked the ending (well mainly the ending of that one-shot ^-^) since it wasn't one of those cheesy, '~4 years later~ we do get married, see?' endings. Sure we don't actually see them get married and have kids and all but we just have to believe that they will reunite in the future just like Makino has to believe that Domyouji will come back to her. (that sounded corny, I know >.>)
Anyways, I definitely would have given this series a 10 but that amnesia mini-arc annoyed me a bit. It just felt like some crappy soap opera move so I deducted 0.2 points.

This is probably the one of the BEST Shoujo manga I have ever read. I am actually content with the ending and the oneshot too. It's obvious they will have a happy ending. I recommend this to every Shoujo lover out there. Its a story that one should not miss.

What is everyone talking about?!
That ending was wonderful... So great. I loved it.
It was much better than any corny, predictable, boring finale...
I can't believe I put off reading this manga because some reviewers said the ending was disappointing. Just goes to show you really have to experience things for yourself and not just listen to the opinions of others. hehe
I was COMPLETELY satisfied with how it ended. There was no cliff hanger. A cliff hanger is when everything hangs in the balance and you have no idea what the outcome will be...
But god, how much clearer can it get? Of course they're only high school graduates so there can't be a wedding and babies...pff...but it is so obvious that they have a happy ending. All the obstacles between them were cleared (especially the thing with his mum). The future holds endless possiblities for them... Now that their romance have no more obstacles, they'll take the time to grow and become better people before fulfilling their promise to each other. It was beautifully done. Kudos to the author.
But hey, if you're one of those people who needs everything spelled out... right down to the definitive happily-ever-after.... in order to be satisfied, then you might be a little disappointed, I guess. Go read a fairy tale for that...

WARNING: This review contains spoilers!
All right, I don't want to pick a fight with the many fans this story obviously has, but to me, just trying to survive the first few volumes was sheer torture. What made the torture worse was that the set-up was so good -- with the first volume, I had high hopes of what would happen in the future. I kept reading because I wanted to see those hopes fulfilled. Instead, the plot went swiftly downhill and just kept getting worse. It got more and more unrealistic as time went on, and I was completely unable to believe a thing that was happening.
Don't get me wrong... I really like the heroine. I think she's awesome -- strong, unique and interesting. Unfortunately, the manga is wasted on her. Some of the situations she has to deal with are just ridiculous.
I'm not saying that factual realism is what makes a manga good -- because there are plenty of fantasy stories that are great. No, what bothers me most about this manga is that it lacks emotional realism and psychological consistency. Things just don't make sense. They're overly melodramatic. The characters themselves are well-made, but they're placed in such completely unreal situations that they can't develop properly.
I want to hold my head and cry for wasting my time on this manga. Usually, if I don't like a manga, I just stop reading after a few chapters -- but what made this story so hard to give up on was the fact that the heroine rocked. I feel so disappointed that such an excellent character was wasted on a story like this. Augh. If I hadn't had such high hopes, I guess I'd never bother to rant like this!
Please don't read Hana Yori Dango if you want to read intelligent shoujo or a consistent story. If you're looking for good shoujo, read something like Gokusen, Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai, Eden no Hana, Baby Pop, Auto Focus or any number of other titles. Just NOT THIS ONE. I fell for the trap offered by the first few chapters, and by the glowing praises of so many fans. But trust me when I say that the story doesn't live up to its best points. It just gets worse!

Take the guy named Tsukasa, for example. I can't believe that he was simply forgiven and even accepted as a friend by the heroine after he paid a group of guys to rape her. I mean, what the hell? That's totally inconsistent with her personality! With anyone's personality!
There are plenty of other situations that are unreal or that don't make any sense -- like the heroine getting dragged behind a car in full view of the entire student body and the teachers. There's also that malicious beyotch Sakurako, who suddenly turns around and repents when it's convenient. I mean, I can suspend my disbelief a few times, but this manga's really stretching it!
