This series made me cry so much. I cryed because i was laughing so hard, it was depressing, and because of the romance. If you want a great story with comedy, romance, and with a twist of mystery and great drama, then Fruits Basket is for you. I take that back, I recommend Fruits basket for anyone who wants an awesome manga. Fruots Basket is AMAZING! Definitely one of the best out there, if it's not the best.

I liked it, but it was a bit long. In this series, you learn about everyone and their grandmother's stories. It's pretty depressing and angsty most of the time, and the protaganist is annoying as sin, but the character development (of all characters save the protaganist) throughout the story is pretty good.

I normally don't read shoujo but because of the anime I've completelly fallen for this series... cried a lot too, it's very dramatic but also very very funny (that part when momiji and the guys are in one bedroom and the wind blasts throwing everything away he goes to the window, poen his arms and shouts: WIND STOP kkkkkkkkkkkkk just remembering I laugh)... the end is good and haru-kun rules!!
not overrated!!

i think that it really lives up to it's the rumors!
the comedy is awesome and the characters are all unique
and there's a definate character devolopement.
pretty cheery most of time but there are also some sad parts that will make you cry.
the ending was sweet and nice but still made me crave for more even though it was a good ending
one of the things that stood out was how the zodiac's played a role in the story and in the characters personality...i thinked that part was pretty cool
anyhow...i don't think it's overrated at all and one of my definate favs!

It's one of the first shoujo manga I've read, and I must say I'm quite surprised. It's GOOD. Much better than I expected. Maybe not really a masterpiece, but still a solid piece of entertainment. The characters are well thought out, and most of all, interesting. Almost all of the characters holding important roles in the story are well developed, and even if some aren't exactly likeable, they still have their reasons and motives(though Akito and Shigure could use some more character developement).
Now, if you get bored in the beginning, don't abandon this series. Even though I feel it's pretty solid from the start, it goes at quite slow pace at first. But well, that changes later and in the latter third the manga starts moving faster in more serious direction. But when the drama comes, it's not out of place. It's nicely suggested from the start, just in the beginning the focus lies elsewhere. And when it gets serious, that's when it gets really good.
Oh, and if you don't like too much BL in your manga, don't worry. It is there, but most of it isn't really treated seriously. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
All in all, a very solid manga. Maybe it didn't make me cry, but well, there were very few series that managed that. Definitely worth checking out, even if you didn't read shoujo before.

If you're looking for a manga with romance, drama and comedy, this is the perfect choice. I've read this 3 times already but it never failed to make me cry everytime I read it.
The first volumes focus on introducing the characters, and as you continue to read to the end, it's where the drama and romance unfold. The ending is perfect too - I wish I could've seen more about what happened.
Best shoujo manga ever.

Personally disliked it. Too much of a sausage-fest with plenty of homosexual reference. But hey, if you're into that, along with plenty of drama, you're sure to enjoy Fruits Basket.
edit: Example of what I'm talking about, is for instance when the one guy proves his hair is "naturally white". Ahem...Yeah...about that...

This is a hard series for me to rate...so I'm not going to give it a number score. The first half of the manga I ABSOLUTELY ADORED! It was hillarious, upbeat, and fun. Definitely worth reading. The second half, however, took the whole series into a new direction, and I couldn't stand it. The characters and plot suddenly became filled with tragedy and angst. And the sweet little love triangles I adored so much earlier were completely destroyed. I wish I'd stopped reading right at the middle.
a manga worth reading
