Still the best...

I've re-read all the hunter x hunter manga within the last year up to its latest releases, just finished all the anime + OVAs, and STILL ache to finish where the OVAs left off by reading it in manga form again.

I understand why people are kind of bothered by the Chimera ant arc. I stopped reading it just when the concept of that arc got introduced because the chapters weren't done yet and it didn't seem like it'd take very well. So when I came back and re-read it all, I discovered that the Chimera ant is actually the best arc in the Hunter X Hunter series yet! Things mature a lot faster for our favorite protagonists.

Don't be afraid to go right to the end of the releases. Sometimes it's better to be both happy and unsatisfied...

Hunter X Hunter rules!

Recently, I just watched the anime and it ruled!!! The anime is somewhat different from the manga since it has some extra bits! ! Unfortunately, the anime is TOO short- it is only up to Greed Island. I seriously wish there is more of Hunter X Hunter-the characters are so lovable! (=.=. And I am not a pedo. I am the same age as Gon and Killua so it is okay to like them!)
Because of my age, I am sort of freaked out at the Chimera Ant stuff since the storyline is TOO mature now (too much blood and gore?) Actually, after reading more of it, I am not so freaked out. You begin to like the new storyline (sort of). Yet I still really want to arc to progress and finish!
But nevertheless, Hunter X Hunter is still a great read! I am a girl but still, I think this manga is awesome! There is action, adventure and... frienship-which is quite rare nowadays (excluding One Piece, fairy tail etc)
Still, I think this is a great read and definitely worth it! And for all of you guys bad mouthing Togashi's current art and stuff I say:
Screw u guys.
-Sorry since it sounds quite mean, but yeah.
Anyways, it must be hard for a sick mangaka to draw... And the art is still clear and nice! ^.^

Overall, (I believe) Hunter X Hunter is an amazing read!

Edit: it's 2017 now. When I first began reading Hunter x Hunter I was killua and gon's age... Over seven years have passed but I keep returning to this. I've grown so attached to this series, it's been there with me since I was young like an old friend. It's strange to say but following HxH throughout my teens has been a formative experience; it's encouraged me to appreciate adventure, friendship, excitement and even pushed me to examine and appreciate the vastness of world around me. I'm so glad it is off hiatus once again. Kudos to Togashi.

Shonen Jump´s best ongoing

I have been reading HxH since 2001 and am as satisfied as ever. Great characters and inventive stories are the strong points. Some rushed art later on and long gaps in the publications (he is a sickly so i consider this a non-isse) are the downsides. More Leorio would also have been better too but i can barely find deep flaws in this great series and hope for a few more years worth of content and a more direct sequel to the Chimera Ant arc story.
I especially liked how Gon lost his humanity during that story while Meruem slowly turned human and relatable which is a hard feat as he started off as a cannibalistic child murderer. That whole narrative is best compared to the essentially perfect Parasyte and is destined to remain the high point of the series. The Shin York Arc was the next best thing and both showed how developed the world is and that a protagonist doesn´t have to be the vocal point or all powerful all the time. I am a bit surprised that SJ allowed all the dark themes and the excessive violence as it is even less young reader friendly than the infamous Fist of the North Star or JoJo. The art style may seem upbeat at first and humor runs throughout but i fully expect it to also switch to the Seinen Ultra Jump one of these days.
HxH is the current golden standard for SJ action without a doubt and both anime adaptations are of high quality.
The 2nd one may seems better as it covers more ground and skipped any form of filler but it´s pacing and some skipped content early on proved to be a problem when directly compared. Both have good ending points too as most arcs in the series tend to have. Yoshihiro main two previous works both feature good ideas but none impressed me overall. Yu Yu Hakusho (6/10) is still worth a read despite it´s uneven and somewhat crazy nature and it further features a surprising strong ending. Other adult audience friendly Shounen action drama are Claymore (8,5/10) or Shingeki no Kyojin - Before the Fall (9/10) while Rurouni Kenshin and Full Metal Alchemist still represent the golden standard. You know what? The first 2/3s of Naruto (7,5/10) are good too but don´t tell anyone.

Alright, regarding the other comments on this page I have my own to add to them. The main character is "undoubtedly" Gon. You did read the manga, right? Okay, just checking. There's so many subliminal meanings that can be deciphered from the ant arc that it's ridiculous. For instance, I'm pretty sure the chimera ant queen was created from a human mishap. This can be compared to the weapons like the atomic bombs, guns, etc that humans have crafted and have taken WAY more than 500,000 lives. Now the corrupt officials are making the hunter association take care of it. I don't like the unfair criticism against the Hunter x Hunter because the mangaka is sick. Due to the fact he's not able to develop the storyline, it becomes stagnant. Therefore, it too easy to create harsh criticism while no development in plot is occuring. Grant it the ant chapter will suck if he doesn't finish it well, but that goes for every manga, too. I believe this is a great chance for Gon's "limitless" potential to come forth or maybe even Ging will arrive to help. It's pretty awesome how the manga started so pure and innocent then turned into the dark reality of what the Hunter x Hunter world is truly like. If you can't grasp this knowledge go read a kiddy comic. --Adios. **GET BETTER SOON YOSHIHIRO TOGASHI

Hunter x Hunter's fame

i really don't care if the series is not completed, i never regret reading hunter x hunter. It is one of the best manga created. I don't think anybody have the ability to make a manga about collecting so interesting as hunter x hunter. People seem cant really appreciate hunter x hunter. Those people who compared hunter x hunter with naruto, dbz, or one piece disgusted me, those cheapo mangas are out of league with hunter x hunter.

Why bother threatening that many fans has dropped this series long time ago.Tell me why it still make million sales on volumes. There are many fans out there who talked big, calling hunter x hunter crap and still secretly reading them from the minute they are released, worshipping togashi.

Just give up, just admit that hunter x hunter is the best. Just admit that hunter x hunter's fame will go on forever.

It's been almost a decade since I started reading HxH and I have never read and reread/watched and rewatched a manga/anime as much as I did with HxH. The main protagonists, Gon and Killua, are both still one of the best well-thought out characters in any shounen story. Although the Chimera arc veered away from the usual flow of the story, I think it's a fresh start on the whole series. It depicts a more mature and often complex storyline but for a slightly good reason--it also touches on many political aspects of the real world. At first it did seem abit boring, but as you begin to see the "end" of this arc (the defeat of the king) you may notice how the circumstances are played out to better contribute to the growth of the protagonists--or atleast that's how I saw it. True, I did not like the fact that there were many, MANY uncanny resemblances to DZ king, supersayan-ish actions, etc I still think HxH is still giving a lot more than the usual shounen. Many of the ants were unique and had interesting powers and I appreciated how Togashi created sidestories for some of the more significant ants.

I like Naruto (despite it's tendency of becoming redundant), One Piece <3 and Bleach but I have never invested so much time in a manga as much as I did with HxH and many a times I still find the "emotional" parts of the story very endearing even if I've seen it 8-9 times.

I do hope you get well soon Togashi-sensei!

Characters, plot, concept, it excels in all these aspects. As for artwork, I've seen some of his better stuff, and there is no doubt that he can draw really well. Too bad he gets lazy at times, but the poor artwork is overshadowed by the great story, and will be hardly noticeable(well, maybe for me) once you get used to it. Besides, it isn't always that bad, only the later ones are, mostly due to the fact that he is sick. Artwork aside, as I have said, all other aspects are superb. Never have I seen a concept as unique and creative as Nen. Character development is also one of the its greatest aspects. It also isn't your typical shounen manga where characters match power against power with the stronger one being the victor. Battles here are won by tactics and strategy, something that other fighting mangas lack. With that said, hopefully chapter 261 comes out already, because I'm already missing my dose of HxH for a long time.

togashi is literally a god

i watched hxh (2011) in.. 2015? i didnt expect to like it, and wasnt sure of the appeal at first, but i found myself binge watching all 148 episodes in 2 weeks. my grades dropped, i was mildly(?) obsessed with it for like 2 entire years. one day i decided to read the manga, i started on the first chapter even though i already knew most of the story, and read every available chapter at the time. it's the kind of story you find yourself never wanting to end, its so full of potential and adventure, the characters' stories feel like they have their whole lives ahead of them that you want to see.
people say the art is awful, but it really isnt-- it's rushed often, and sloppy, and simple, but it's not bad. togashi is by no means a bad artist, and some of the panels that he had the time to put more work into are really beautiful and intricate. the volumes have updated art that is a lot neater if it really bothers you so much, and togashi's artstyle in my opinion is full of a certain charm i can't replicate.
the main appeal of hunter x hunter, to me, is the characters. my immediate favorite was killua, i first became attached to him because his personality was really endearing to me, and he later became my favorite character of all time due to how complex and well written he was. killua and gon's friendship has been said by many to be one of the greatest and most well-written in anime, and i have to wholeheartedly agree. they have a very realistic friendship, and it's very meaningful and impactful for both characters without just being used to have friendship powers save the day. the two characters complement each other and are foils of each other in more ways than one, and their relationship does have tension later on that makes sense for the characters and story and isnt just added to create drama and be edgy.
many think gon is a boring protagonist, and take him at face value, but what togashi really likes to do is deconstruct many shounen tropes. gon is a very clear deconstruction of the typical shounen protagonist, and if you pick up on foreshadowing and see him as you'd see a person rather than a "protagonist," i think you'll find him much more interesting and complex than you originally may have thought. his simplicity is his complexity, if that makes sense. people also forget that he's just a child, too.
the same can be said for leorio, another character many overlook and i'll admit i did too at first, but i've really grown to love him over time. he's a genuinely good guy, and he hasnt had as much of his story explored yet, but if you think about what we do know about him, he is much more remarkable than he seems.
kurapika is a character i also personally love. he is fixated on revenge and was a major inspiration for sasuke. a lot of ppl like him so i won't explain why i like him.
side characters are all pretty unique visually, conceptually, etc. there's a lot to love
villains are all interesting with the exception of some villains in one arc

tl;dr, the main four are all very likable (imo) and gon and killua are both very well written as is their relationship.
there's also the fact that it's very well thought out, in terms of the fighting system and everything. one con is that sometimes togashi will cover entire pages in text explaining things that just go in one ear and out the other, but once all these threads come together it forms something beautiful. so u gotta bear with it. but i will admit i've been kind of lost in the more recent chapters

(if you care, hxh also has a very good example of good trans representation in the character alluka, who is a trans girl, and there are several nonbinary and gnc characters. i'm not gonna pretend its amazing lgbt rep, though, and just be warned in the first arc there is a very transphobic moment in trick tower. it was made worse by the anime subtitles using a slur, and im not sure if the manga does as well, but i just wanted to warn anyone who might want ot avoid it. as far as i know that's the only instance of transphobia played as a joke. later there is some, but no slurs are used and the transphobic characters are condemned for it. there's also a character, hisoka, who is an antagonist and is the most heavily implied to be gay character in the series. he's also a pedophile. sooooo... yeah. just fair warning. i'm hoping togashi will add gay characters who aren't villains or pedophiles cuz otherwize............. i'm sure he wants to, as both he and his wife are very vocally supportive of the lgbt community and have included many lgbt characters in their respective manga)

i could go on forever about this manga. i'm so grateful to have read it, it will always have a special place in my heart.

Ha!
I was 9 when i watched the anime and fell in love!
What is Togashi's problem actually? His illness that makes this series turn into Hiatus X Hiatus?
Actually I do believe that if he didnt pause to draw this manga back then, and did it continuesly, it will be one of The Big 3 of Shonen Jump. It has the potential!

(give it 9 rating due to the slow progress...)

i really miss this series ; u ; i'm very glad they made a remake of the series.
(although i still love the original series except for its later part that honestly bored me out. ^^;wink

however, after re-reading the whole manga series of Hunter X Hunter
i've come to conclusion that i'm just one lazy reader; especially on explanation parts (heheheh)
^_^;;

but, in reality, i think that every arc is important for the development of
the four MAIN PROTAGONIST of the story (Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio)
although, i wish there'll be an arc featuring more development for leorio... xD
since i think he's the only one who hasn't gotten one ; u ;_b
i'm surprised to some of his development. but, as far as everyone's concerned...
among the four...he's the only one i haven't seen an arc mostly dedicated for him;
which makes someone like me as a reader, more curious...
as to who he really is and how come there are times that
he "seemed" to be more than "special" OR
who "sometimes" could slightly exceed
or be in par with Kurapika's judgment or strength of Killua / Gon
at some chapters or unnoticed situations. ^^;;

All in all, I'm very glad that HxH is entering a new arc.
And I really hope that the 2011 anime will be more popular
and more loved as the original in 1999 smile
