Description
The story is of Kitano Seiichirou, a very kind and pure-hearted young man, with a horrifying, monstrous face. People being what they are, they think he's a terrifying delinquent, and there are plenty of chance misunderstandings (coupled with Kitano's convenient inability to understand what's happening around him) that propel him into the position of "school guardian", a.k.a. head thug on campus.

Right now I am on my late 30´s so you can imagine, have being read a lot of mangas and comics since I start at 8, If you have any doubt to read Angel Densetsu may no doubt anymore cause I haven't laugh this much in long time with a manga, the gags, jokes and misunderstands with the message is really amazing on this one, The last manga who make me smile this much was Seitokai Yakuindomo.

Fantastic Manga

Easily one of the funniest and sweetest highschool manga I've read. As a fan of delinquent manga, it was especially enjoyable to read a 'reverse delinquent' manga, as it were, seeing as the entire premise is that the main character's natural appearance makes him look like the worst delinquent spawn of satan villain to exist on God's earth, while his true character is that of an angel - hence the title. It's quite similar to Waratte! Sotomura-san in this single sense, in that everything the protagonist does is misread and reinforces their delinquent image despite the intentions. Unlike Waratte! Sotomura-san, which is a 4-koma gag manga on this premise, Angel Densetsu is a full monthly-issue-chapter-size slice of life manga.

This manga has come under a little criticism for the quality of its art, and I can kinda see where they're coming from if they were only talking about the first chapter or the first volume. But the art markedly improves over the course of the manga, to the point that it is clearly recognizable as the same mangaka who created Claymore (for it is he) by the latter stages, I would argue even as early as vol. 5.

Beside that, most people can get over bad art for a good story (case in point - the people that read ONE's original webcomic of Onepunch-Man), and this is a pretty good story. The repetition of "different people see Kitano's face, overreact at his terrifying visage and do stupid things" could get old quickly for some people, but it's a joke that is spun differently with every new person so that it keeps fresh, and soon enough, an assembly of different characters each funny in their own way come together around him and comedy, friendship, characters and relationships develop as naturally as if it was always meant to be like that.

To quote/paraphrase the author - "I'd prefer if people didn't read this as a manga called Angel Densetsu that some guy drew, but as peering into the world of Hekikuu town, a sunny place with little rain, full of silly people who act out silly little events".

If that was his goal, he has succeeded beyond doubt. And drew a darn funny manga called Angel Densetsu in the process.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
As for the ending, it gave more closure than most manga manage to be honest, the obvious parallels between Kitano/Ryoko as a couple and the backstory of Kitano's parents serve as fairly blatant forshadowing for their fate at the very least. Then there's the chemistry between Ikuno and Takehisa, which has the potential to be something more than rivalry, and then Kuroda had that one moment of gallantry with "Ryoko's Friend A", Ikuko so... that could, potentially develop to a possibility of them getting closer in a non-descript manner...

In the end the main couple get together, while the others memebers' relationships are left to intrepertation, which is good enough for a comedy manga that doesn't actually focus on romance. Ties it up better than quite a few other manga I could name at least :p

The fact that i registered solely to comment on this manga proves that it makes an impact.
Yesterday i finished reading Angel Densetsu and i felt completely satisfied, it's a shame i can only give this a 10, it deserves much more.
With shame i say that i only got to it the second time around because i backed away at first because of the art in the first volume.
Angel Densetsu is the one manga that actually made me laugh out loud, no other accomplished that so far. The situations it presents are ridiculous, funny and heartwarming. The characters are funny and lovable. The lesson it teaches is a most valuable one and one that we should never forget. Yes, despite this being a comedy it has educational value.
While in my first attempt i found the art style to be horrible, it actually gets much, much better and i find it to be fitting for the art to be different on a manga wich is based around appearences.
While in middle volumes things start to lose it's hilarious edge, it gains in heartwarming moments while still maintaining the funny aspect, and the ending...oh the ending was just perfect. Usually i'm not very fond of endings because they take away something i've experienced throughout the stories, but this one was delivered beautifully.
Kitano, satan's right hand man, the indestructible murdering rage in human skin, is truly one great guy bigrazz
Sorry i just had to say it ahaha.

Truly a great manga, i recomend it to anyone.

Forget the artwork--this is the real deal

I cannot contain my excitement! This manga is fantastic...words that I would never use for manga--- "sweet, funny and genuine". Most manga are action yarns and or pure fantasy but this is one of those rare stories that is simply just good. Full of heart and actually funny for western audiences. Knowing that the manga ka did this 1st and then has created another excellent manga in Claymore is thrilling..stop reading and download volume one now. The artwork is raw but story is amazing.

A Fun Read That Gets Repetitive

A fun relatively short read. Kitano looks scary but is actually kind and pure of heart. Almost all of this manga is variations of gag plots that revolve around people expecting him to be evil. The characters are good, and the art is middling but distinctive. I especially enjoyed Takehisa.

Pass on this if you can't handle repetitive plots. Otherwise I really recommend it.

This manga made me laugh so many times. I never laughed as much from a manga as this. I really avoided it cuz of that the main character looks like crap -_-' well people kept recommending it to me so I was like, what the hell alright. Just kept me going on reading. Great manga to read. Definately recommend.

I don't know how the author does it but they somehow kept it fresh and hilarious the whole way using the one gag premise

Humor Everywhere

I've just finished this manga for the second time and I enjoyed it as much (if not more) than the first time a few years ago.

It's a good story that seeks to deal with common prejudices based on appearance, rather than personality. It kind of beats you over the head with it. It's so obvious it's almost cheesy, but somehow it's really refreshing.
The humor itself is more or less of the same nature throughout Angel Densetsu, but it does get you in unexpected ways every now and then.
This was the mangaka's first serialized work I believe, so the art starts out semi-bad. But you can really see how he got practiced over time and by the end, the art is downright beautiful and Yagi Norihiro develops his own distinct style.
The "bad" art for the first few volumes is the only reason I'm giving this a 9 out of 10, rather than full marks.

Loved this to bits

I. Adored. This. It was absolutely one of my favorite mangas of all time. I totally didn't expect this too - at first, when looking at other people's comments about repetitive plot and stupid characters, I was prepared for it to just be good for a laugh. But once I started reading, I couldn't stop, and I read it all in one sitting, then the next day I went back and read my favorite bits again, and re-read them for good measure, and I ultimately came to the conclusion that I'm utterly a fan of this. Why? First off, I couldn't get enough of the characters - my favorite is Takahisa, and my least favorite is Kuroda, but each and every one of them have intriguingly distinctive personalities and cool roles to play and I enjoyed watching how they banded together around Kitano. Secondly, I really enjoyed the plot - I didn't find the running gags repetitive, because the outcome of each gag would happen in such different ways and keep me laughing constantly. And the ending? So. Badass. All in all, highly recommending this manga to everybody.
