Description
From Be Beautiful:

A lighthearted romantic comedy that lampoons the adult film business, the mainstream media, and the natural vanity of actors while exploring the earliest stages of a brand new relationship.

Includes the story Fuyu no Semi in vol.5:
It is the Bakamatsu and early Meiji Period. Akizuki Keiichirou and Kusaka Touma stand of opposite sides of the political scale of the time but still, something as fragile as the shell of a cicada binds these two men together in a tragic and cruel fate. A story of friendship, love and seperation as well as reunion and sacrifice.

i just can`t get enough! though there are a lot of chapters, i never get bored. i love the romance in this one. its not just plain homo sex out of nowhere but very clearly defined and reasonable. It makes me rethink about my biased opinion on yaoi (which is gay love with random sex). this is a truly wonderful story full of drama, sex and romance that has the right balance.
Not to mention its goddamn sexy wink i`ve managed to read alot of yaoi and i found most stupid and disgusting. but this...this is just beautiful. it cannot make my heart hurt or what but it can make my you know what throb =))))) i feel so guilty being horny on a pure, beautiful and sensible manga. katou is very childish and can be bitchy at times but i loooooove how much he loves iwaka (was it his name?).
All the same, i want to read this through the end. (it gets hotter each passing chapter)

this is my second read of these series...katou is childish, yeah, but who cares...one must be more adult ,in the relasionship. so you cannot say it was boring.for the scenes, yeah they were short in any meaning.but what if they were long enough?! I think it wouldn't be good for my heart..(blush) this is the story of falling deeper and deeper, one of the bests..thanks for the hard work Nitta-san

If I were to be honestly objective, I'd say Haru wo daiteita is far from perfect. It's really long, goes in circles for a good while and many chapters don't deliver anything new or exciting. The characters are really annoying at first (and later if you can't get used to it). Kato is a jealous, childish, whiny b****, Iwaki is a stereotypical dense guy who doesn't get anything and almost everybody else is somehow attracted to them. They live in a melodramatic fairytale world where real homophobia doesn't exist and everything always ends well. Not to mention there's so much sex that it's boring.

However, if I may put it this way, I've known this manga almost since the very beginning and I love it no matter how it sometimes makes me doubt my own good taste. I facepalm, I roll my eyes, sigh and complain but I still read it when I'm upset, stressed or insomniac. I'm emotionally attached to the characters and have a special soft spot for Kato despite disliking people like him in real life. I like how their relationship evolves, how they change and mature while still remaining the same, how they try to fix their flows and often fail. The bond between the two of them is one that I can only be envious of.

The strange thing about this manga is that it's equally realistic and unrealistic. It seems to be the latter because there's a ridiculous amount of drama BUT when I think deeply about it, I'm always hit with a conclusion that I've seen many similar situations or even experienced them myself. To tell the truth, Kato emotionally is almost like my friend's boyfriend. I read and think "Gosh, that's exactly what he always says/does!". It's quite amusing.

Of course, like I said, I do get bored, usually around the middle when it slows down a bit. Reading all the volumes in one go is impossible for me. (Maybe I'd feel more motivated if there was more Sawa x Yukihito, haha~) In all seriousness, I understand how someone could completely dislike it. Even from a fan's point of view the realism of the story is lacking in some aspects. And there could be more kissing instead of sex because Nitta does kissing scenes incredibly well! But no matter what harsh words I say, I still find it beautiful, heart-warming and definitely one of the best yaoi titles because of how close and yet how far it is from real life. I know my review is full of contradictions but if you read and think about it, I'm sure you'll understand and love it just as much as I do smile

Maybe I'm broken? I have no idea. I've made it to about chapter 26. It started out dumb, then got a bit better, now it's just dragging. Like can I really read 50+ more chapters of this? It's already repetitive and I'm barely a third of the way through.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's just "waahh! You don't love me!" "Yes I do love you!".."Oh ok!" *hump hump hump*. Over and over.
. It may be vaguely realistic in a way, for a really over-dramatic couple, but do I really want to follow every in and out of theirs? I'd be happy with the cliff notes. This feels more like listening to a friend drone on for five years about their obnoxious relationship.

On the plus side, the art is better than I expected.

This was an absolutely wonderful manga. I can't believe how long it took me to get around to reading this. Such a pity! It had everything I could have wanted. Really, I couldn't ask for more.

The art, first of all, was absolutely stunning! I was a bit prejudiced looking at the cover but for no reason. It gets even better as the story progresses. The style is beautiful and extremely detailed, yet clean. Superb! It reminded me of a mix of Ayano Yamane's and Inariya Fusanosuke's art. Really nice to look at. Especially the kissing scenes were on a level you rarely come by. It really heightens the romance. Now, I confess I normally focus on the characters looks, but in this manga even the backdrop was often drawn so elaborately that it really drew attention to itself. Art-wise one of the best I've read definitely!

The characters in this story are also wonderful. The main couple especially. I liked Iwaki-san best, such an easy character to relate to. I also loved the character growth there and how he goes from distant and detached to passionate but easily irritable and finally from there to loving, tender, and caring. So sweet. Katou matured alot too but his character felt less consistent to me. The side character's were also very interesting if not always sympathetic.

When it comes to plot, there's not much to complain about either. It was realistic, but not in aboring kind of way, just in a way to make it all more believable. I loved it for being so well thought out; in each scene the emotions portrayed by the characters came across nicely and they were presented in a way that made it all seem so profound. No randomness or superficiality at all! I must really praise the plot for all the attention placed on matters other than the main couple's romance as well. Everything about whatever was going on around them seemed so real and the mangaka must have really done some research on the film industry and such. Very good work!

The only criticism I might offer is the lack of a cohesive theme for the manga as a whole. It had more the feel of a really long collection of these slice of life stories revolving around one couple. It did have elements that worked to move the plot along from chapter to chapter but it didn't have any one thing to bring it all together. The storylines were enjoyable, though, and there was real unpredictability and originality. It also had a bit of everything; cute lovey-dovey fluff, drama, angst, tragedy, comedy, and romance all wrapped in one. Oh and the story Winter Cicada was especially beautiful. I think this is the first time a manga has actually made me cry. It was amazing...

I highly recommend this! It's a keeper...

Amazing Manga

I´m normally a very picky person and I hate wasting time on something that isn´t worth it. Considering that this Manga was really long ( 77 chapters+ extra ), I was very sceptical. I thought this was another yaoi manga that had "Just-sex-no-plot" kinda theme. The art in the cover didn´t apply to me either, because I´m not a big fan of 90´s art. Either way, I decided to give it a shot, and it was the best thing I´ve done in awhile.

I loved this yaoi manga, this is the first time I´ve read a yaoi-manga and thought " I wish it could never end", and I still wish it didn´t end. Because this manga was superb. I really liked the feeling between the characters. The love they had for eachother felt so real and heartwarming and I couldn´t stop myself from wanting more and more.

I could sit here and write about the character development and the art, but that would be just a waste of time for you. Because you should start reading this manga instantly, if not, you will miss out of a lot.

When my eyes first unveiled the endless world of Yaoi, I kept finding myself reading a lot ABOUT Haru wo Daite Ita. But for the lack of my better judgement, I kept tossing it aside and just giving it my 180 eye roll because it looks, well, honestly? The cover displeased me. Yes, stupid, I know.

The art is actually GORGEOUS!<3 One of the best art in a manga I have seen, and I've had my fair share.

The romance? Realistic, Angsty, Adorable, Sexy; What else could a yaoi fangirl ask for?

The story. Unique, unique, unique. Entertaining to the point where you really won't want to put this manga down. It keeps you glued till the end.

Characters. Adorable. They have so much debth that you can actually feel for them. I felt myself "awwwing" at SO many parts and screaming out "SHIT!" during the agnsty parts.

Simply amazing. If you don't read this? =_= I feel sorry for you my dear friend. You're missing A LOT!

PS: I've re-read it about four times now =D

What strikes me with Haru wo Daiteita is the feel of realism it gives. Unlike most yaoi the characters appear to be both equal in masculinity and strength and the definition of 'seme' and 'uke' are not played into the story. The characters have an equal relationship, and this is something that attracted me to the story. Secondly, the romance within the story surprised me. I have read many yaoi manga previously but none have had the depth of emotion and devotion that was displayed in this manga with the characters. I also loved that the story managed so seamlessly to incorporate the troubles of working as actors whilst being open with their relationship. This is also quite an unpredictable story. It doesn't start as a typical romance, there is no 'love at first sight' and the relationship proceeds at a steady pace with many trials, from simple differences in emotions to rumours of infidelity. These trials are what keeps the story interesting and are also what helps define the complex personalities of the main characters.

This manga is perfect for anyone who enjoys romance - but it should be noted that the content is uncensored and there are adult scenes in many of the chapters which are not suitable for persons under the age of 18.

This is, and will most likely remain, my favourite yaoi manga - and one of the best romance manga's i've ever read. I really can't sing its praise more

Too much drama...

I have been avoiding this manga for years, I knew it was a classic but I didn't like the art on the cover, but I finally started reading it a few days ago and I was surprised, the art really isn't that bad and the manga turned out to be pretty good. The characters are pretty interesting and it really is so refreshing to have no uke/seme stereotypes, no one is the guy or girl of the relationship here. It had potential...

But my biggest beef with this manga though is all the drama.. I've been taking note that at least once per chapter one of the characters screams/shouts a super melodramatic statement. It was ok at first but I'm only on the 4th volume and I'm already rolling my eyes at their antics... I feel like they flip out on each other over the tiniest crap. I'm not really feeling either of the characters at this point. If this keeps up, I don't know how I'm going to make it through the rest.
