Amazing

Like Daxisheart said: only 2 out of the 33 volumes of this novel are translated at the moment. The rest of it you can read through a combination of shoddy machine translations and attempted summaries by fans. But I read through EVERY VOLUME. It's just that good.

LMS is, hands down, the best of the 'virtual reality' stories online. It's captivating, it's funny, and it gets better the farther along it goes. The scope of the world expands, but it keeps to it's core characters, so you never feel like you've lost a hold of what's going on.

And Weed is a manipulative, miserly guy whose sheer charisma makes up for it; not to mention his skill and Determinator-like tendencies. Plus he's hilarious. He may be bordering on perfect... but his personality is LOL.

Most immersive work of fiction I've ever read.

Title says all: this has got to be the most fleshed-out iteration of the whole virtual reality premise along with the most likeable character I have ever come to know. LMS goes beyond a mere story about a video game, it is a truly touching celebration of what hard work and a little bit (okay, a lot!) of luck can can put into motion.

actually, there are scans of up to the end of the first english translation of the novel (chapter 13).
The story is awesome, and I really hope they will translate and publish the other volumes in english too. some of the strongest points of the novel are the writing style, which allows for really easy visualization and immersion into the story. The side characters are decent, and get fleshed out better towards the end of the first volume, and the main character is developping really well.
I didn't enjoy the artwork in the book though, it looks kind of childish and the style doesn't click with the story. On the other hand, the way system notices like 'level up' and such are shown is really nice.

Bizarrely enjoyable

There's no question that the writing of The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is terrible in every way. But despite the horrific grammar, repetitive plot, and plethora of unimaginative side characters, it's actually pretty entertaining to read. The pure ridiculousness of the main character is enough to make him a caricature of himself as the story progresses. Any time it seems as though he might have a smidgeon of character development the author seems determined to immediately backtrack and squash it. Despite this, however, I won't deny that the story has its moments. At the very least it's hours upon hours of diversion.

Best Virtual Reality lightnovel
by world is wide

Epic. Must read.

When Lee Hyun's parents died, he supported his family by dropping out of highschool and doing backbreaking manual labor. As the story starts he finds he can make better money gaming

Good world building for both the sci-fi virtual reality and in game fantasy setting. Side characters fleshed out enough to complement the adventures of the main character. A unique perspective driving a unique hero. Loved every bit of it

Some people grow sick of Lee Hyun's money obsessed character, but his unexpected actions show his character depth. Familial love is really his primary motivation, and he is very entertaining in his calculated actions and eye for investment. Even if his motivations are strange his actions are neutral/good.

The "money as basic necessity" perspective is what elevates LMS to greatness. Lee Hyun doesnt need to be magically transported or trapped in the virtual reality game. There is plenty of tension from dangerous situations because only through success is he able to feed his family

Painful

This series easily ranks among the worst I've seen in terms of character development. Despite 10 volumes of text, the MC continues to belittle his profession, act like an idiot in regards to his crush, physically abuses the people he summons, and is in general a PoS. I just had the pleasure of reading that the meal he prepared for his party was cooked with back-alley food past its' expiration date and hands that hadn't been washed for two months.

- - - - - - - -

Hands & Food:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
“But when was the last time you’ve washed your hands?”
Of course, the question was a joke, but Weed offered a serious answer.
“A month ago; or it could have been two. Well, I don’t really recall….”
“……”
Irene, speechless, began shedding tears.

------

“Yeah, they were cheap, but…”
“Where’d you get them?”
“In an alley.”
“An alley?”
Mapan paused for a moment, coming out of his hesitation, he said.
“It’s easier to believe they came from China…”
“Ahheuk!”
Irene flooded with tears.

The MC's Reaction When His Party Found Out:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And now everyone caught wind of the deal!
Weed spoke without an ounce of alarm.
"Then don't eat when you're hungry!"
He threw a threat at them!

Weed's Party:
  • Weed's precious sister
  • His close friends whom he's played with from the start
  • Instructors and members of the dojo who trained him.

The BS Reasoning:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Everywhere in the world, there's corruption, even in cuisine!
Meals in the early days of a restaurant tend to be on the good side. But slowly, the qualities of the foods drop to slightly average or go completely unbearable.

- - - - - - - -

The MC's Philosophy on Obedience:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
According to Weeds philosophy, if he didn't beat them enough, they would get rebellious.
Beating that rebellious spirit out of him
Being beaten at any time leaves an aftertaste. And being caught so suddenly one day.
The times between beatings were very short.
Soon you start acting more positively.
Just like how Death Knight Van Hawk was compliant.

Weed gently hit Tori on the shoulder.
"Do you want to get beat?"
"That, that is not the case."
"Now you're going to live your life with pride and good fortune?"
"That would be more comfortable."
"Then do you want to get beat then?"
"..."
Weed scared Tori again, beating him here where there was no doctor to heal him.

- - - - - - - - - -

PS: It's ok though, the MC had a hard childhood so it's all right.

I love this novel - particularly the MC and the fact that the story shows every single detail of his epic adventures. However, I sometimes feel as if one part is too long? For example, the objective would be to kill this one mob, or etc. The story then continues to explain - in full detail - about an unnecessarily long ride it took there, such as a bear came out of nowhere or they decided to stop for a break and explain what happened during that time. Yeah, no. Wish it would get to the point faster.

Great novel

The characters each are interesting and have their own playing style which adds to the story. Weed is a fairly unique character. Weed is one of the few greedy protagonists that are done in a fun and interesting way. He initially started Royal Road for the purpose of making money and his various actions typically were for the sole act of money making. This makes Weed take interesting choices that adds to the story. Although some of the characters can be annoying at times, altogether it's a fun and addicting story.

Instead of reading these reviews, why not just check out the work? Personal taste is an important criterion of satisfaction.

While the premise is unrealistic, the first few volumes are wonderful. Amazing, delightful, a myriad of other similar adjectives besides. The story and primary developments are enticing and keep the reader engaged. Subsequent volumes (say, up to 25?) utilize this momentum and allow the reader to keep cheering for the underdog, Weed.

Along the way, however, Weed's accomplishments become overwhelming. While a natural consequence of such a story, the desert arc feels especially jarring and the series loses its original charm as Weed's abilities far outshine those of his opponents, a problem exacerbated by the lack of a well-established rival character, Bard Ray seeming more like an afterthought.

Note that my understanding of untranslated chapters is bare and relies on chapter summaries, which may affect the reliability of this review.

Regarding translations, those of earlier volumes, while not with perfect grammar, are definitely readable, while those of later volumes are of higher quality. However, a result of the translations' being done by different groups is the variety reflected in the romanization of proper nouns -- Ahreupen and Arpen; Jaffre and Zephyr; Pale and Fail; Surka and Sureuka; GeomChi and SwordNoob; etc. -- which may prove confusing. Notwithstanding this caveat and considering the length of the series, the translators have done an outstanding job.

Probably the most detailed MMORPG light novel out there
by cvurnes
August 11th, 2014, 3:40pm
Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
The most detailed and comprehensive MMORPG world I've ever read. It's like "Ready Player One" meets "Sword Art Online". Easily beats out the likes of SAO, Ark, .HACK and others of the same genre.
Only issue is the english translations which isn't a fault of the author. You can see the translation quality drop off after the first 10 volumes.
