Spoiler (highlight to view)
The protagonist cries because her boyfriend had sex with someone else before her. Oh and the girl, that he had sex with, thinks that she being fat then having a weight loss to get the boy is a proof of how much she loves him. Meh, that's just stupid and biased.

Well, the beginning was really exciting, plus the drawing is interesting & very current (lol everyone looks like a gyaru). But eventually their love-love stuff is just getting too corny. It's the same old predictable unreasonably "pure love" between the main couple among the depressingly extreme sluttiness of the other characters around them. (Really, it's as if 99% of their school's population actively hook up with their sex friends, wtf? high school ≠ night club, k.) And on top of that, the relationship development between the two main character doesn't go very deep (after like 6 volumes). There were a few conflicts between them, but even after they're resolved, it doesn't feel like the relationship has changed or become more serious. I just think the story doesn't fulfill the expectations that the readers would have after reading the first volume. (Also, Y U NO SHOW SEXY SCENES?!)

edit: Surprisingly enough I'm still following this. I think what I wrote after reading up to volume 6 is still true up to chapter 38. It seems that there's no end to the main character getting praised like she's a saint... but somehow I got used to it (-_-). However, there was a whole side story about a supporting character, who at first was portrayed like a complete villain, but her side of the story is quite psychologically intriguing, so that's a plus. Also, it seems that the plot is getting closer to sexy time (finally? or is this yet another false alarm?)

A Must-Read Shoujo Manga!

If you love shoujo and slice of life manga, you absolutely must read this. To me, it's kind of like a more mature, more fast-paced Kimi ni Todoke that focuses more on life and love as opposed to overcoming bullying, making friends, and being accepted. But anyways. Suki-tte Ii na yo fuses together two plot lines in each chapter. The main underlying plot is Mei and Kurosawa's budding love for each other. And that plot is usually accompanied by a subplot that focuses more on minor characters' problems (which are usually solved once they interact with Mei). These problems are usually pretty hefty (sex, body image, loneliness, bullying, etc.). But it's handled really well. The subplots only add to the story. That having been said, the main plot is very good too. It's a slow-paced love story. And, really, pacing love is one of the hardest things to do in manga. But it's very good in Suki-tte Ii na yo. The leads aren't just diving into things, but it also doesn't take 10 volumes before they kiss. The two plots really compliment each other, and I never feel as though one detracts from the other.
Overall, the pacing and characters are good. The art's good. Mei and Kurosawa are adorable. It's kind of a cliche premise (lonely girl gets picked by popular guy), but it somehow utilizes that cliche to make a very endearing manga. I'm very impressed at how well the mangaka executes this manga, and I'm very eager to read the next chapter.

Unpredictable (in a good way)

I started this not knowing if I'd like it or not. It starts off pretty angsty, but I'm glad that I continued. This manga deals with pretty serious issues such as self-esteem and self-image. This is for more mature audiences... and it makes you think about issues that are happening here and now. The art is pretty simple and clean and rather grows on you (at least for me).

@tartufo: kudos to your comment! It was because of you that I started reading this! I thank you!

I frankly can't believe that people find this an "ordinary" manga - maybe it starts off that way, but this ends up dealing with issues like sexuality, identity crises, eating disorders and other pretty heavy stuff with a kind of realism and actual INTELLIGENCE, without glossing over the ugly realities like most shoujo mangas do. And in a weird way, that is actually WHY this manga is even sweeter, because when the sweet moments come along you know what they're worth. It's like... This manga is all about how to appreciate what you've got, you know? And realize how sweet and beautiful life can be, even when it gives you lemons. biggrin

I really love this manga. It becomes more and more realistic instead of less so, which is the case with most shoujo, and it also becomes sweeter and sweeter as we realize the depth of the male lead's feelings for the girl, even if she's so at odds with herself and awkward in dealing with emotions. I like the fact that she's realistically awkward... Usually, shoujo heroines belong to extremes like being COMPLETELY comfortable and assertive with their emotions (or unrealistically so), or being on the other end of the spectrum and being super-violent or oblivious girls with no emotional delicacy whatsoever. I like this heroine because she's actually a very sensitive girl who can still kick ass and assert herself if a major moral issue is at stake. So she doesn't always occupy an extreme; she's capable of adapting to the situation like a normal person. Lol.

Two thumbs up!

I don't understand why people like this series so much. It's not too bad, but it's not good either, and has nothing special at all. And I don't think it's cute, compared to many cute & hilarious shoujo.

he confesses to her and asks her if she loves him after they have known each other for about a week? and why does she like him? i dont know. i have no clue. they hardly even know each other.
it started off promising, but then...it just went down the drain.

couldnt she have called the police about the stalker?...

okay art by my standards, but all the characters are too thin and elongated. its weird.

I've read up to the latest chapter, which is currently 10 atm. The characters in the beginning weren't anything astounding, seems to be the usual fanfare. The story has a decent pace and the 2 protagonists do develop but still nothing too great yet; though it does have it's moments. I'm going to read more before giving a rating since it seems to be getting better.

I do read more shounen mangas though so maybe it just doesn't interest me as much.

I'm up to chapter four in this series, and since I've liked it so much, I have to comment! Well, you know, it IS a shoujo, so there are cliches and those little generic moments. But other than that, this manga is awesome. It just is. It portrays high school/ previous middle school feelings and situations pretty spot on and realistically, unlike many shoujos. The characters are loveable and unique. The heroine ain't no pushover but she has weak spots and the main guy isn't some super shoujo guy who is "perfect-in-every-way-and-has-no-flaw-except-for-his-deep-love-for-the-heroine" type. He's got his flaws too.
I haven't gotten to the smutty parts yet, but from what other people here have said, it adds to the story and relationship. So! A must read for anyone who is looking for some good readin'. Oh, and it's pretty funny too. So, read Say I Love You, and fall in love too! (So corny. I know.)
P.S. I think Mei, the main character, isn't plain at all! She's not over the top pretty, but she's really cute and has a style that she rocks.
