FL is just like not other girls

I dropped it if I am being honest. I didn't like the FL and based on her personality the blondie was indeed a better fit for her. ML was the only interesting character in this. I almost always crush on FLs more than MLs but the FL was just so annoying. ML carried the story alone

Cheese in the Trap is the most well-written manhwa I have ever read. The story is told from the POV of the sensitive FL, Seol, so it does read very cerebral, but her thought process is so complex and insightful that it doesn't get boring, despite the lack of action or heart-pandering drama. Every single character is extremely complex and well-written, not just the main cast, and you really see how morality/humans aren't black and white. It gives a great commentary of society and leaves readers with something to think about in its wake. The fact that people are still talking about the main couple is a testament of how enduring its legacy is!

Two BROKEN people cannot fix each other

I can’t help but compare Cheese in the Trap to Kare Kano.

——

Arima vs. Jung

They are kinda similar but not really. They’re both problematic (mostly Jung) and needed therapy (mostly Arima).

The main difference is Arima’s past is just…yikes. Like it makes sense why he is the way he is with the possessiveness and all. Jung on the other hand, something’s missing. I know most of it had to do with his sus dad, but it felt lacking. The entire time, his manipulative ways and how it explained in the end that it was all because of Sul, I just don’t buy it.

In real life, Jung could be considered as a sociopath. No amount of “He was in love”, or “He was traumatized” could convince me that he isn’t at-least some kind of psycho. “Jerk” is an understatement. I hate that this wasn’t explored more.

——

Yukino vs Sul

Completely different people. Yukino is more mentally stronger. The only similarity is that both characters accepted the main mc for who they were. Then again, Sul, with all the things Jung did, it doesn’t make sense for her to trust him completely, or ever.

——

Verdict

Cheese in the Trap was very interesting in the “beginning”. If the story didn’t include romance, I think it would have been better. Why? The author succeeded to make Jung Yoo a really creepy and interesting character yet also failed at it. I wish we got a more elaborated backstory of Jung’s dad. I swear Cheese in the Trap could have been Jung’s origin story. He is kinda a villain in my eyes.

Sul is the “mouse” right? Well the author also succeeded to present that majority of Sul’s problems stemmed from Jung and the blonde siblings. Funny, she is indeed trapped, forever, with Jung.

The story became repetitive with all the added plots of students backstabbing each other. It got so boring by the end. And that ending? What? What was that?

Two broken people cannot fix each other. It almost always lead to self-destruction.

——

To be honest, I’ve read this a long time ago when it was still in the early stages. Revisiting the series made me question it a lot. I might as well revisit Kare Kano.

THERE'S A SEQUEL COMIC, IT CAME OUT THIS YEAR

It's published on Samsung's Bespoke Newsletter (bespoke is apparently some sort of refrigerator thingy??)

Titled "치즈인더트랩 신혼편" which translates to "Cheese in the Trap: Newlyweds" ^^

Yea it is for promoting Bespoke's stuff, but its still a (short-snippet) comic about their married life + cameos of fridges
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
also, it's not just about Jung and Seol's married life!

Cause while I was scurrying through Korean blogs that talked about this new comic, I saw one that featured a panel of Baek In-Ho! I think we get to see what he's up to now??

I heard that there were eight short-snippet comics, and I'm not sure if you can view them all, but here's the website where you can see a few. You just scroll down to the end of the page, where there should be a "June, May, April, March" lineup and then click on a magazine, then scroll through that: https://www.samsung.com/sec/bespoke/event/monthlybespoke/?eventNo=31214

Other than that, I have no idea how to access the rest. It's for Koreans and it's 'Bespoke Only' content...aghghg! Perhaps I should consider buying a new fridge...

But anyway, it's gonna be serialized till December!

Important info aside, as for my take on this comic:
...will be written later, I'm too lazy to do it now lolol

Looking back this all of this was just about a sociopath falling in love with a hella sensitive girl but this probably is and will be the best story I’ll ever read. I don’t think I will find something like this ever again… I’m a bit sad.
Also the ending was impeccable.

This should be called The Diary of Sociopathic Son and Dad. I'm at ch 260+ and I still think MC is a creepy sociopath. His dad seems like a greater evil of the two

Left me feeling Bitter sweet

Reading this manhwa was a very adventerous experience in itself. It left me feeling numb and empty inside after I finished it,more so because There are many things wrong with it and still the narration and characters ,you cannot help but love it.
Spoilers here on:-
Seol is portrayed as a very kind and gentle person. She couldn't bring herself to do anything even moderately bad or give someone even the same treatment they they gave you which is very realistic too. I would have done the same in those situations because no matter how bad the other person is to you a person would find it hard to voilate their own moral to go as low as the person bothering them. Her attitude healed Inho and helped him move on in his life which is why I shiped them well for most of the time. The fluffy moments b/w Jung and Seol are what made many readers heart waver to Jung I think. But it doesn't change the fact that he was nice only to the people he wanted to be nice to.There wasn't much character development in him except for the fact that he was able to love Seol now.He didn't change his way of getting back at people in manipulative ways than confronting him. Many people claim that Seol and Jung changed each other.Seol did change and started standing up for herself but in case of Jung nothing much changed,he was manipulative till the last 10 chapters and it isn't indicated that he changed in anyway in the future.Seol accepted him the way he was and never wished for any change in his attitude except the fact that he should tell her everything on her mind which also he didn't.I didnot hate his manipulative personality that much to begin with at sometimes what he did should have inevitably been done .What bothered me was that he didn't did to them what they did to him in the same magnitude but he did much worse. A single time giggling at him and an accessing gaze from Seol made him send a stalker towards her as well as a near death experience. If I were Seol around him I would be especially wary to never accidentally say something leading to my doom. That is why this relationship appears to be messed up.
The ending wasn't satisfying because the misunderstanding with Inho never got cleared and they never made up which is very sad.Over some spoken statement Jung was agitated enough to snatch away Inho's dream and passion from him.He extracted revenge on him knowing that the harm would be irredeemable later on makes me resent him.Inho had a very sad past and a heart of Gold despite that.I cannot help but feel that he should have gotten His first love Seol tho I knew it was completely impossible in the presence of a rich and academically successful guy, that is a always the case which manhwas and noone can deny it.Inho didn't get the girl cause he was not educated or high earning and Jung was responsible for this too.Inha gets off easy despite what she did.Seol was going to tell Jung about her but we never get to that part and I don't know if she did.If anything could have changed Jung's manipulative personality then it would be the last encounter between jung and Inho,So if someone is to be thanked for healing Jung it is Inho.
So basically I'm sulking cause i didn't get to see Inho marry someone he falls in love with again and have a lot of cute kids after reconciling with jung.
The actions of Jung are also quite understanable since no one with true emotion had ever loved him except Inho(which he didn't get) and Seol.Being for long used by people he decided to make use of them too and with no one to guide him he turned out the way he did.He was bad in the sense he never could have been giuded by anyone who was inferior to him like Inho according to him.He somehow felt that Seol wasn't a creature much below him at some point so he gave her a chance to love him.All this talk of love tho I know is bullshit because he only wanted Romance as he had couple of people who treated him as his friend in actual terms and not just to leech off of him(like the guy he always hanged out with).
